Susanna, your mum was a nurse. Has that helped you through the uncertainty? My mum is my hero. She’s been a nurse for decades – not practising now, apart from with her own family. We always rely on her to tell us what’s wrong. Through the wonders of online, she has managed to stay in touch with so many people, and having an allotment keeps her out in the fresh air as well. She has been an inspiration. Throughout the pandemic, the show has stressed the need to give people hope. Are you hopeful for 2021? SUSANNA: I really am. furloughed from my new sales job, and restrictions meant the hospital could no longer take on volunteers. Sitting at home with my laptop during lockdown, I saw an advert for a job as a healthcare assistant at the hospital. Despite being in the midst of the pandemic, I applied – and, last April, I had my first shift. Giving back Working for the place that had saved my life, on the frontline of COVID-19, was an incredible feeling. I helped out across different wards and even saw the nurses and doctors – the superheroes – who’d helped me. I chatted to people and found out their stories, sharing mine, too. It was such a rewarding role, I decided not to go back to my sales job. I’m so glad Max, now seven, sees his mum healthy and happy, a world away from the mum I was in 2016. People juggle so much in life – from work to children to relationships – and I don’t want others to make the same mistake I did. If something feels wrong, don’t keep making excuses, don’t put it down to the stresses in your life – push the doctors for answers, because it could just save your life.

22 Woman’s Own Healthy Eating Foods to eat on the keto diet As you’re cutting right back on carbs, most of your calories will come from protein and good-quality fat. You also need to cut right back on processed foods. Some of the foods you can choose from include oily fish (such as salmon, mackerel, sardines), good-quality meat, eggs, FAT avocado, olives and olive oil, coconut oil, butter, seeds and ghee. Drinks can include water, herbal teas and coffee. The KetoFast diet By combining fasting and the keto diet, you’re helping your body get rid of toxins much more efficiently. In the long-term, the benefits are influenced more by the foods you eat during the periods you’re not fasting, rather than the fast itself. Keto days Cut right back on carbs (between 20-50g per day) and replace them with healthy fats (see above). A banana, for example, has 25g of carbs, and so does an apple, while a slice of bread has around 20g. To check the carb load of foods, try an app such as MyFitnessPal (free, iOS & Android), which allows you to input foods and check calories and carb count. Feast days After reaching ketosis, you start to cycle in one to two days every week of higher carbs – ‘feast’ days. Not only does this make it easier to stick to, but by giving your body a break and cycling in and out of keto, it becomes even more efficient. Fast days KetoFasting is a 24-hour period of eating between 300-600 calories. To work out how many you should be eating, multiply your weight in pounds by 3.5. So, irrespective of height, a 10st (140lb) woman would eat no more than 490 Example cyclical keto days calories, with no more than 20g carbs. entire world. Other than that, just find someone who makes you laugh more than anything in the world and the person who you don’t mind being in lockdown with! You made a brief return to Corrie last year. Would you go back full-time? It’s a big question to go back full-time because it’s a whole lifestyle change, as my life is in London now. I do love the show and my character, and I wish I could have done a bit more than what I did. I’d never say never because there’s something in my head that goes, ‘You’re going to end up back in Corrie at some point.’ And what are your hopes for next year? I hope that, by March, we come back round to some semblance of normality. I’m hoping there’s something that means I will get to hug my mum again, and not have to worry about it. That is my absolute wish and hope.
