Gerson Department of Philosophy University of Toronto [email protected] ABSTRACT In this paper, I examine the problem of the so- called Mathematical Objects within the context of the Divided Line. I argue that Plato believes that there are such objects but their distinctness and the mode of cognition relative to them can only be understood in relation to the superordi- nate, unhypothetical first principle of all, the Idea of the Good. If creativity in the arts involves an exercise of the imagination, the image-making power that links sense perception to noet- ic thought and the nous poietikos , the poetic or creative intellect, then the arts exercise the apprehension of intellectual activity and unconscious thought. According to John Dillon in “Plotinus and the Transcendental Imag- ination,” 1 Plotinus’ conception of the imagination led to the formulation of the imagination as a basis of artistic creativity. In Plotinus, imagination operates on several different levels: it produces images in sense perception, it synthesizes images in dianoetic thought, and it produces images in correspondence with the articulation through logos of noetic thought.

Rather, some things have a derivative mode of reality they call subsistence: these entities are non-existent in that they are not themselves solid bodies, but they are nonetheless Something physical because they depend on bodies for their subsistence. My dissertation uncovers the unifying principles of Stoic subsistence, and shows how they can account for thoughts and other immaterial entities without running afoul of their physicalist commitments. While all commentators agree that the Stoics posited Something as the highest category of being, they have failed to find a coherent physicalist account of Stoic ontology.

(EN 1102a5-25)1 The study of the human good requires the study of the human soul; Aristotelian ethics requires Aristotelian psychology. Not too much psychology, Aristotle warns us, but enough for the purpose at hand (1102a23-6) - the Ethics' purpose of defining the human good and explaining how it is achieved. Thus as ethicists we can for instance ignore questions about the ontological status of soul-parts. What do we need to know? Aristotle's answer comes from the function argument (EN 1097b21-98a20), whose conclusion he restates in our opening quotation. The human good consists in the excellent performance of the human function; the human function consists in distinctively human activity, i.e. a distinctively human life; this can only be the activity of the distinctive parts of the human soul.2 The ethicist must thus study these parts enough to understand what they do - their functions - and what makes them do that excellently - their virtues. Aristotle assumes without argument that we know something general but crucial about these distinctive parts: they are those that “have logos” - usually glossed as “share in reason,” “are rational.”3 He states this already in the function argument (EN 1098a3-5); later discussions give us more detail.

    Thought as Internal Speech in Plato and Aristotle Matthew Duncombe Abstract Scholars often assert that Plato and Aristotle share the view that discursive thought (dianoia) is intemal speech (TIS). However, there has been little work to c1arify or substantiate this reading. In this paper I show Plato and Aristotle share some core commitrnents about the relationship of thought and speech, but cash out TIS in different ways. Plato and Aristotle both hold that discursive thinking is a process that moves from a set of doxastic states to a final doxastic state. The resulting judgments (doxai) can be true or false. Norms govern these final judgments and, in virtue of that, they govern the process that arrives at those judgments. The principal norm is consistency. However, the philosophers differ on the source of this norm. For Plato, persuasiveness and accuracy ground non-contradiction because internal speech is dialogical. For Aristotle, the Principle of Non-Contradiction grounds a Doxastic Thesis (Dn that no judgment can contradict itself. For Aristotle, metaphysics grounds non-contr~diction because internal speech is monological. Introduction Some prominent scholars assert that Aristotle follows Plato in the view that thought is internal speech (TIS).l But what does TIS amount to for each philosopher and to what extent do their views differ? I argue that Plato and Aristotle agree that thought and speech share some general features, but disagree on what "internal speech" iso To put my claim more pungently, Plato and Aristotle could hoth endorse the slogan "thought is internal speech", but disagree on the details.
