Grade Level: 3rd–5th grade 1 Snowshoe Hike Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore Overview The following lessons were designed as pre, during, and post activities for snow shoe hikes to Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore. The purpose of the pre visit activities is to build background knowledge and to create interest and excitement for the snow shoe hike. The lessons during the hike will allow students to explore concepts in winter ecology and snow-science in a hands-on, experiential format. The post activities are designed to extend learning and to give students the opportunity to be creative and to connect learning to the real world. The lessons are designed to work together, yet can be used in a mix and match way based on student interest and needs.     US History/Road to Revolution 1 US History/Road to Revolution The French and Indian War (The following text is from Wikipedia) The French and Indian War (1754–1763) was the North American chapter of the Seven Years' War. The name refers to the two main enemies of the British: the royal French forces and the various American Indian forces allied with them. The conflict, the fourth such colonial war between the kingdoms of France and Great Britain, resulted in the British conquest of all of New France east of the Mississippi River, as well as Spanish Florida. The outcome was one of the most significant developments in a century of Anglo-French conflict. To compensate its ally, Spain, for its loss of Florida, France ceded its control of French Louisiana west of the Mississippi. France's colonial presence north of the Caribbean was reduced to the tiny islands of Saint Pierre and Miquelon. Naming the war The conflict is known by several names. In British North America, wars were often named after the sitting British monarch, such as King William's War or Queen Anne's War. Because there had already been a King George's War in the 1740s, British colonists named the second war in King George's reign after their opponents, and thus it became known as the French and Indian War.[1] This traditional name remains standard in the United States, although it obscures the fact that American Indians fought on both sides of the conflict.[2] American historians generally use the traditional name or the European title (the Seven Years' War), and have also invented other, less frequently used names for the war, including the Fourth Intercolonial War and the Great War for the Empire.[1] In Great Britain and France, the North American theatre of the Seven Years' War war usually has no special name, and so the entire worldwide conflict is known as the Seven Years' War (or the Guerre de sept ans).

    From the Editors Arguably the most important year in Hudson Valley history since 1909, we are already in the midst of celebrations surrounding the Hudson-Fulton-Champlain Quadricentennial. This issue commemorates the accomplishments and legacies of all three honorees—Henry Hudson, Robert Fulton, and Samuel de Champlain— as well as the lasting contributions of the commission that planned events sur- rounding the 1909 Hudson-Fulton Tercentenary. We open with a review of the 1909 festivities and follow with a brief survey of Dutch archival history from the preeminent historian and translator of New Netherland manuscripts. For the complete story on Robert Fulton, readers should reference our Autumn 2007 issue, which contained a lengthy biography of the inventor. Here its author offers a brief summary of Fulton’s steamboat voyage and how it revolutionized transportation, in America and around the world. Delving into the Champlain Valley for the first time, we begin at the beginning, with an article tracing the Native American presence there from prehistory to the American Revolution. We return to Hudson with an overview written by William T. Reynolds, the captain of the Replica Ship The Half Moon, and an excerpt of Robert Juet’s journal of the voyage. Joyce Goodfriend illustrates both the power of the Dutch cultural legacy and the tensions caused by the British control after 1664. Lastly, André Senecal explains Champlain and the circumstances that led to his actions in 1609. We conclude with two more articles exploring the signal contributions Hudson and Champlain made to local and world history. M.Wolff answered him to be careful of himself when he comes again. —Captain Malartic WINTER RAIDS By the time Robert Rogers and his troops got within a half dozen miles of Fort Carillon on March 13, 1758, they had endured three ag- onizing days and nights of cold and snow. By light and through hours of dark they had trudged on snowshoes up Lake George’s ice toward Fort Carillon. The frigid air constantly seeped through the layers of wool capotes, blankets, caps, hunting shirts, and leggings that each man wore. Even the sun could be an enemy. Cloudless skies were usually colder and the sun’s rays glaring off the snow-buried landscape was blinding. The nights were worse. Fires were forbid- den. At best the men could chop down fir saplings, spread them across the snow, and shiver the dark away atop them. In addition to battling the elements, they were haunted by the constant fear that at any time musket shots and war screams would split the air—fol- lowed by a rush of hideously painted Indians brandishing toma- hawks and scalping knives. Winter campaigns could rapidly break down most men physically and emotionally.     100 Emory Endeavors in History 2013 A Country Dangerous for Discipline: The Clash and Combination of Regular and Irregular Warfare during the French and Indian War Nicole Goetz Abstract This article argues that the reason that the British were victorious in the French and Indian War in the North American theatre was not due to their having superior military technology or deeper pockets than the French, but due to their leadership and military tactics on the battlefield. While both the French and British campaigns engaged in irregular, or guerrilla, and regular warfare, the British combined both tactics into a hybrid way of war that proved superior on the battlefield. Meanwhile, the inability of the French to combine these two strategies made them the weaker, despite being more skilled at irregular warfare. The guerrilla warfare tactics developed during this war would prove to be timeless, reappearing later in America’s military history in the Revolutionary War, the Vietnam War, and more recently in the Afghanistan and Iraq wars. Introduction uerrilla warfare became a highly important topic of discussion during the Vietnam War. The United States and South Vietnam without a G doubt had more firepower and weapons than North Vietnam, yet the Americans and South Vietnamese struggled to stay afloat against the North Vietnamese. More recently, in the past decade, U.S. troops were again challenged by guerrilla warfare tactics used by the Iraqi insurgency in Iraq and the Taliban in Afghanistan. These conflicts proved that it not only mattered which side possessed better firearms technology, but also which side better executed guerrilla warfare tactics.
