ABSTRACT This article presents both ethnoentomological notes on Nahuatl and Mixtec language terms as they are applied to Cerambycidae (Coleoptera) and distributional records for species collected during three projects carried out in the states of Guerrero and Puebla, Mexico. Some comparative data from other Mesoamerican and Native American languages are discussed. Indigenous common names are mapped onto current taxonomic nomenclature, and an analysis is offered of the logical basis for Indigenous classification: the exclusion of some cerambycids and the inclusion of other beetles in the nominal native “cerambycid” category. New state distributional records for the Cerambycidae collected in this study are offered for Guerrero: Bebelis picta Pascoe, Callipogon senex Dupont, Neocompsa macrotricha Martins, Olenosus ser- rimanus Bates, Ornithia mexicana zapotensis Tippmann, Stenygra histrio Audinet-Serville, Strongylaspis championi Bates, Lissonotus flavocinctus puncticollis Bates, and Nothopleurus lobigenis Bates; and Puebla: Juiaparus mexicanus (Thomson), Ptychodes guttulatus Dillon and Dillon, and Steirastoma senex White. 1 Checklist of the Cerambycidae, or longhorned beetles (Coleoptera) of the Western Hemisphere 2009 Version (updated through 31 December 2008) Miguel A. Monné, and Larry G. Bezark, Compilers Introduction The Cerambycidae, commonly known as longhorned beetles, longicorns, capricorns, round-headed borers, timber beetles, goat beetles (bock-käfern), or sawyer beetles, comprise one of the largest and most varied families of Coleoptera, with body length alone varying from ± 2.5 mm (Cyrtinus sp.) to slightly over 17 cm (Titanus giganteus). Distributed world- wide from sea level to montane sites as high as 4,200 m elevation wherever their host plants are found, cerambycids have long been a favorite with collectors. Taxonomic interest in the family has been fairly consistent for the past century, but the description of new taxa has accelerated in recent decades thanks to the efforts of Chemsak, Linsley, Giesbert, Martins, Monné, Galileo, Napp, and other workers. This checklist builds upon the efforts of Blackwelder (1946), Chemsak & Linsley (1982), Chemsak, Linsley & Noguera (1992), and Monné & Giesbert (1994), and presently includes nearly 9,000 described species and subspecies, covering the terrestrial hemisphere from Canada and Alaska to Argentina and Chile, and including the Caribbean arc. Adult Cerambycidae, upon which most taxonomic studies in the family have been based, vary widely in their habits. Some species are nocturnal, many are attracted to artificial light, and they also may be found at night on the trunks and branches of their host plants, or on foliage. Diurnal species also may be found on or near their host plants, but many species are attracted to blossoms of shrubs and trees, where they may serve as pollinators. -

Ninety seven species are recorded for the first time in Maranhão. The majority of the species belongs to two or more morphoclimatic domains of Brazil. New species described of Lamiinae: Punctozotroctes inhamum sp. nov. (Acanthoderini) from Caxias; Oncideres mirador sp. nov. from Mirador and Oncideres coites sp. nov. (Onciderini) from Caxias. Ecology and Evolutionary Biology Newsletter 2005 Number 11 ECOLOGY AND EVOLUTIONARY BIOLOGY 1 Ecology and Evolutionary Biology Newsletter Dear EEB Associates and Friends: Welcome to another edition of the EEB Newsletter. With the start of this fall semester, the Department is no longer a teenager. It is now twenty years old. In 1985 the Biological Sciences Group, home to all biol- ogy in the College of Liberal Arts & Sciences, became the departments of Ecology & Evolutionary Biology (EEB), Molecular & Cell Biology (MCB), and Physiology & Neurobiology (PNB). Since that time, the three departments have prospered, and we cooperate to provide a comprehensive, coordinated introductory curriculum in biology, both for biology majors and for those who major in other disciplines. This fall semester is significant in another way. It marks the first fall in which about half of our faculty are housed in new offices and laboratories in the BioPharm – a new building shared with the School of Pharmacy that also houses research laboratories for faculty in PNB. You may remember that PNB moved to facilities on Horse- barn Hill almost a decade ago. We are pleased that after a decade of separation, biology will be reunited. The past year has seen two significant additions to the department. Adam Fry joined us in January, 2005. Adam comes to us with a Ph.D. from Brown University after post-doctoral work at the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution. In addition to teaching in two of the large, introductory courses, Adam coordi- nates much of the introductory biology curriculum, including the Early College Experience Program that allows high school students in certified biology courses to receive credit for our introductory courses for biology majors. -

Introduction This checklist continues to record many of the species collected by the authors and others who are participating in the "Bolivian Cerambycid Project" a cooperative program between the Museo de Historia Natural "Noel Kempff Mercado" (MNKM), Santa Cruz de la Sierra, Bolivia, Florida State Collection of Arthropods (FSCA), Gainesville, FL and the American Coleoptera Museum (ACMT), San Antonio, TX. This long-term program was initiated in 2000 with the primary objective to conduct a survey of the Bolivian cerambycid fauna. All Holotypes described from collected specimens, and a significant portion of all other collected specimens, are being deposited in the MNKM.. Although the majority of consumed insects are gathered in forest habitats, mass-rearing systems are being developed in many countries. Insects offer a significant opportunity to merge traditional knowledge and modern science to improve human food security worldwide. This publication describes the contribution of insects to food security and examines future prospects for raising insects at a commercial scale to improve food and feed production, diversify diets, and support livelihoods in both developing and developed countries. It shows the many traditional and potential new uses of insects for direct human consumption and the opportunities for and constraints to farming them for food and feed. It examines the body of research on issues such as insect nutrition and food safety, the use of insects as animal feed, and the processing and preservation of insects and their products. It highlights the need to develop a regulatory framework to govern the use of insects for food security. And it presents case studies and examples from around the world. Edible insects are a promising alternative to the conventional production of meat, either for direct human consumption or for indirect use as feedstock. -

Maximum population was recorded from Department of Zoology, AARI fields 51.89% (N=274) and least from Pansera fields i.e. 48.11% (N=254). Overall, significant Wildlife & Fisheries, University of Agriculture, results were recorded from AARI fields and among them, higher relative abundance (67.15%; N=184) Faisalabad, Pakistan was recorded for order Diptera. From Pensera Sarson fields, higher relative abundance (71.26%; N=181) was recorded again for order Diptera, followed by Lepidoptera (25.98%; N=66); however, least relative Ahmad Saeed Khan abundance (2.76%; N=7) was recorded for order Coleoptera.
