The long-term relationships between IEMG anthropologists and local actors have led representatives of Ghanaian communities and institutions to ask for a restitution of knowledge gathered throughout the years by researchers. In order to meet these requests, in mid-1990s IEMG opened the way to the international cooperation in the area, and promoted development projects focused on micro-credit. However, the restitution of ethnographic knowledge has mostly been achieved through the cultural cooperation project Fort Apollonia and the Nzemas. Community-based Management of Natural and Cultural Heritage, Western Region (2008-2011). Managed by COSPE NGO (Cooperation for the Development of Emerging Countries) in collaboration with IEMG and many Ghanaian institutional actors, this project culminated in in 2010 in the establishment of a museum-cultural centre. Today, the Fort Apollonia Museum of Nzema Culture and History plays a leading role in the safeguarding and valorisation of local heritage, as it is testified by its recent participation to a project – founded by the British Library and Sapienza University of Rome – concerning the conservation and digitization of archival documents belonging to Nzema traditional authorities.

    1 Hypotheses on the Diachronic Development of the Akan Language Group Emmanuel Nicholas Abakah, Department of Akan-Nzema, University of Education, Winneba [email protected] Cell: +233 244 732 172 Abstract Historical linguists have already established the constituent varieties of the Akan language group as well as their relationships with other languages. What remains to be done is to reconstruct the Proto- Akan forms and this is what this paper sets out to accomplish. One remarkable observation about language is that languages change through time. This is not to obscure the fact that it is at least conceivable that language could remain unchanged over time, as is the case with some other human institutions e.g. various taboos in some cultures or the value of smile as a nonverbal signal. Be that as it may, the mutually comprehensible varieties of the codes that constitute the Akan language group have evidently undergone some changes over the course of time. However, they lack adequate written material that can take us far back into the history of the Akan language to enable any diachronic or historical linguist to determine hypotheses on their development. Besides, if empirical data from the sister Kwa languages or from the other daughters of the Niger-Congo parent language were readily available, then the reconstruction of the Proto-Akan forms would be quite straightforward. But, unfortunately, these are also hard to come by, at least, for the moment. Nevertheless, to reconstruct a *proto-language, historical linguists have set up a number of methods, which include the comparative method, internal reconstruction, language universals and linguistic typology among others.

Alejandra Elenes Gloria Cuàdraz ARIZONA STATE UNIVERSITY December 2012 ABSTRACT Oral history methodologies are used to conduct fifteen interviews with Martha Akesi Ndaarko Sennie-Tumi over the course of three months. Research responded to the following questions: How do African women defy master narratives? When do African women defy master narratives and move from the margins to the center? What roles do African women take on to defy master narratives and why? To what extent does the concept of malezile (women who stand firm) address human rights? Twelve stories of defiance (three of which are folktales) are analyzed for recurring themes, concepts and motifs. Research showed that African women defy master narratives when the system worked to their detriment through the Nana Esi archetype.     Lund University STVK02 Department of Political Science Tutor: Martin Hall How to Develop Core Elements of Empowerment A Minor Field Study of Young Women’s Empowerment Through Access to ICTs in Dixcove, Ghana Leo Lundblad Stene Abstract The aim of the study is to examine how young women conceive their empowerment processes through access to ICTs, provided by the non-governmental organization IT for Children. The thesis is a qualitative case study of young women’s empowerment. Accordingly, a minor field study was conducted in the village Dixcove in the south of the western region of Ghana. Material was gathered through semi-structured interviews with young female students and key informants with knowledge of the village and lives of the women in the village. Jo Rowland’s theoretical framework of women’s empowerment is employed to give prominence to the young women’s ‘core’ values, its connection to access to computers and the internet as well as inhibiting and encouraging factors to the empowerment process. The results indicate that the young women attending the IT for Children academy in Dixcove have progressed empowerment by developing ‘core’ elements of empowerment personally, in relationships and collectively. Factors inhibiting the empowerment process consist predominantly of external factors of high burden of house chores and work. Factors encouraging the empowerment process consist of support from family and friends, financial stability and inspiration from peers. He is the editor and co-author of the first African encyclopedia in the German Language. His research interest is by in the areas of cultural philosophy, African and European intellectual his- Jacob Emmanuel Mabe tory, French philosophy, political philosophy, intercultural and international ethics. The Book: Wilhelm Anton Amo is probably the only African personality that took part with his own writings in the intellectual discourses of the 18th Century in Eu- rope. There is no contradiction between his personal thought and the general spirit of the Enlightenment. Amo debated on all the important questions of philosophy at the time – from metaphysics through logic and epistemology to political philosophy and philosophy of language. But his intellectual works remain till today unknown. The present increasing interest in his person no doubt arises from the growing importance of intercultural philosophy. This book is an introduction to his philosophical system. Amo understands philosophy as a manner of thinking that aims at perfec- tion. Perfection is rooted in the self preservation and security of the individu- al as well as the preservation and moral perfection of the whole of humanity. In addition, the book dwells on materialism at the centre of which stands dualism of body and soul. The human soul is an immaterial essence without the faculty of sensation.

A totem can be an animal, a plant or any other natural object believed to be ancestrally related to a tribe, clan, or family group as a tutelary spirit. The totem system or totemism serves to identify different geographic and dialectic identities by associating each group with a natural species, usually an animal”. Plants and other natural items are also regarded as totemic. Although totemism may not be a very familiar word in mainstream language usage, humans have practiced it over the ages. The decline in consumption of AIFCs has been implicated in the emergence and spread of chronic diseases in Africa (Rasche et al., 2007). In view of this, the objectives of this thesis are to establish the links among food, culture and politics, to determine the consequences of changing food habits in indigenous communities in Ghana, and also to examine the potential of AIFCs to address chronic diseases in Ghana. Using the theoretical prism of Indigenous knowledge, this thesis employs the methodology of document analysis. The findings of this thesis include the presence of numerous AIFCs and food habits that could be harnessed to address chronic diseases in Ghana.
