NEW RELEASES NO. 10 - 2018

Rim Banna: Voice Of Resistance FXCD 446 / 7041889644629 / label: Kirkelig Kulturverksted / format: CD / Palestine – Popular 'Voice of Resistance' Rim Banna’s new album, a conceptual piece of art blending her heroic spirit of resistance, her defiant poetry and her medical scans with Checkpoint 303’s electronic beats and Bugge Wesseltoft’s edgy piano improvisations. The idea behind the album was born in May 2015, just after Rim was told by doctors that her vocal cords were partially paralyzed and that she would not be able to sing anymore. But…nobody tells Rim what she can or cannot do. Rim met in Oslo with her Norwegian producer Erik Hillestad (KKV record label) and Tunisian sound cutter “SC MoCha” from the electronic activist collective Checkpoint 303. Together they came up with a plan for an unprecedented audio experiment; Checkpoint 303 would remix data from Rim’s medical files (PET and X-ray images) by converting them into sounds to which Rim would then recite (and whenever possible sing) her own poems describing her resistance and her struggle. The outstanding jazz pianist Bugge Wesseltoft, who collaborated with Rim on her last album, immediately accepted to be part of the project and the adventure began. Rim Banna passed away on saturday morning March 24th, 2018, may she rest in peace and power. Listen here.

Samba Toure: Wande (Out on Friday May 25th, 2018) GBCD 59 / 4030433605929 / label: Glitterbeat Records / format: CD / – Popular GBLP 59 / 4030433605912 / label: Glitterbeat Records / format: LP / Mali – Popular 'Wande' is an album that reconciles continuity and change. But both have been the hallmarks of Touré’s career. Starting out as a guitarist in a soukous band, everything was altered when he became an accompanist to Mali’s greatest legend, the late Ali Farka Touré (with whom his mother had performed). Later, as a solo artist, he’s become renowned across the globe for his passionate guitar work and fiery singing, one of the masters of his art, a man who’s learned from the greatest and gone on to develop a sound that’s completely his own. But, Touré says, don’t call it desert blues. Don’t call it African Rock. That’s lazy. It doesn’t need labels like that. Listen to a track.

Various: En El Aire – Polen Records 10 Years PR 3433838 / 4251234338384 / label: Polen Records / format: 2CD / Colombia – Popular Polen Records started to promote a new Latin-American sound, with the purpose of releasing music that didn’t seem to have a place in the market. The catalogue has been constructed with an artistic idea that seeks to maintain a line that reflects the pluri-cultural identity. Among the artist that have been part of this label you can find cult bands like Bajotierra and Sidestepper; the singer Ella Fuksbrauner; the mystic recordings of Mucho Indio, Bomba Estéreo’s dance flor hits, the pioneer of the tropical electronic Pernett; the sweet calypso of Sol Okarina, the avant-garde music of Cero 39, Mitu and their techno from Palenque and last but not least the beautiful melodies of Mónica Giraldo. Polen Records is regarded as a reference label for independent music in Latin-America, and this double CD is a compilation of the first 10 years! Listen here.

And leading a new charge are Tribu Baharú, barrelling out of Bogotá, championing their version of champeta, inspired by the legendary, street-shaking Picó sound-systems of Colombia's Caribbean coast, but here played all-live-onstage with sparkling Congolese guitar driven by high-speed bass and drums and the all- animating upfront singers. Bernard Lubat on piano, drums, voice with saxophonist and clarinettist Louis Sclavis. It's a kind of chamber music (hot room, not cold room), which gets lost with delight in the meanders of what Bernard Lubat calls "the expenditure of oneself", unproductive expenditure, but artistically fertile. Now all you have to do is immerse yourself in this human as well as musical adventure.

EXPECTED

Out on Friday June 1st, 2018 Bernard Orchestar: Le Future Du Passé CCL 4 / 0705632072349 / label Coucou / format: CD / Belgium – Balkan Brass Bernard Orchestar is an anachronistic Balkan brass band. Bernard's team crossed Eastern running to the gates of the East. Following the first two self-produced EPs, the musicians of tomorrow come back with a festive repertoire, doped with electro. Worthy of a James Bond film, the title (The Future Of The Past) of this album gives us, without any contradiction, the key of their music: ambitious but not arrogant, funny but not ridiculous, and of a serious kitsch. The future of the past is the new opus of a modern and uncomplicated Balkan brass band, faithful to the past. style and that doesn't confine itself to the limits of the genre. The band presents an updated album, sprinkled with a romantic twist. Music of tomorrow from yesterday, to listen to today! Listen to a track.

Out on Friday June 1st, 2018 Kila: Tóg é go Bog é KRLP 2 / 5391502370384 / label: Kila Records / format: 2LP / Ireland – Folk This is the album that set Kila around the world. Released originally in 1997 'Tog e go Bog e' was a world embracing album full of idealism, talent and gorgeous music. Kila are long since one of Ireland’s most exciting, innovative and creative bands. They straddle many musical worlds traditional, world, folk, fusion, Celtic among the many caps they can wear, but it is their punk energy that sets them apart, their relentless drive for expression through music and their consistency. Remastered for vinyl this album has finally been given the vinyl treatment. Listen here.

Out on Friday June 1st, 2018 Shadi Fathi & Bijan Chemirani: Delashena BUDA 860330 / 3341348603308 / label: Buda Musique / format: CD / Iran – Traditional "Delashena" ("Familiar in the Heart") of the Iranian duo Shadi Fathi and Bijan Chemirani is a journey to the borders of Persian music, as well listening to the past as to our time. Granting each other total freedom, they create together a conversation based as much on the Persian classical repertoire as on their own journey, alternating improvisations, personal compositions and traditional themes. The different lutes played by Shadi and Bijan's percussion allow us to obtain an immense palette of timbres and dynamics, alternating free sequences and more rhythmic sequences that can approach a certain form of trance. Listen to the album teaser.

Out on Friday June 8th, 2018 Chancha Via Circuito: Bienaventuranza WONDRCD 36 / 0708630007610 / label: Wonderwheel / format: CD / Argentina – Fusion WONDRLP 29 / 0708630007603 / label: Wonderwheel / format: LP / Argentina – Fusion Pedro Canale, better known as his stage name Chancha Vía Circuito is a producer, DJ/remixer and composer, from Greater Buenos Aires, Argentina. Fusion of electronic music and cumbia is the key factor of Chancha Vìa Circuito’s music. He explores the minimal side of digital cumbia with inspiration from Afro- dance, murgas, minimal dub, IDM, and downtempo. Computer bleeps share sonic space with folkloric chant. Candombe drums are accompanied by the sample of a machete splicing the air and a vocal line of indigenous bebop is layered over hints of dub. Chancha Via Circuito brings us his highly anticipated new album Bienaventuranza - a word that essentially means bliss. Replete with his signature touches of Andean instruments (think lots of flute and charango), the folkloric elements on this album blend fluidly with danceable and digestible electronic beats. He's been cooking this record slowly, with unprecedented amounts of care and in a much more collaborative manner than his past albums. Listen to a track here.

Out on Friday June 15th, 2018 Ammar 808: Maghreb United GBCD 60 / 4030433606025 / label: Glitterbeat Records / format: CD / Tunisia – Fusion GBLP 60 / 4030433606018 / label: Glitterbeat Records / format: LP / Tunisia - Fusion Deep TR-808 bass meets pan-Maghreb beats, timeless voices and futurist visions. AMMAR 808 was the sonic mastermind behind the Tunisian sensation: Bargou 08. With singers from Algeria, Tunisia, and Morocco, songs from the Targ, Gnawa, and Raï histories, and a TR-808 alongside a distorted gumbri, gasba flute and zokra bagpipes, this is an album that reaches out to encompass the entire Maghreb area of North . The deep, rumbling growl of the gumbri, the dry, airy tenderness of the gasba, and the softly slithering zokra give a powerful North African root to the music, a thread that spins back through centuries. And the singers burn with fire and grace and passion. It’s the great reinvention of a region’s music. It’s a call to action. It’s the future, right now. Listen here.
