Uscita nelle sale: venerdì 11 gennaio 2002 Film di guerra americano uscito nelle sale nel 2001, anno degli attentati che hanno cambiato il modo di vivere nel mondo. Pino Farinotti - www.mymovies.it Si direbbe che 'Behind' esca in una contingenza fortunata. Molto della nostra vita si riferisce al "dopo 11 settembre", figuriamoci un film di guerra. Dunque un riflusso di patriottismo che sembrerebbe aderire in generale alle storie di guerra americane. In questo caso c'è persino la location che, volendo, sarebbe a sua volta "favorevole", nel senso che la guerra dei Balcani ospitava etnie musulmane estremiste buone per tutti i terrorismi e tutte le guerre. Solo che Chris Burnett, il protagonista, è un militare ironico e tormentato, molto lontano dal concetto "patria e obbedienza" che è la bandiera dell'esercito USA, e non solo di quello. Comunque vorrebbe combattere sul serio, perché il suo comandante (Hackman) gli ha sempre affidato ordinaria amministrazione. Volando per provare una nuova macchina fotografica, viene abbattuto dalla contraerea serba. Rimasto solo nei boschi e nel freddo, sperimentata la crudeltà del nemico e Chris lotta per la sopravvivenza. Nel frattempo il comandante ha organizzato il soccorso. Il film prende spunto dalla storia vera di Scott O' Grady, un ufficiale dell'aviazione che visse, appunto, una vicenda simile. Il regista Moore è una new entry con matrice (ma guarda) pubblicitaria che salta all'occhio. Não obstante, «burguesia» ou as suas «fracções» são categorias ana- líticas cujo emprego na moderna historiografia sobre o século xix não só tem sido frequente, como tem assumido um papel fulcral em muitas inter- pretações da nossa história económica e social contemporânea1. Daqui tem resultado uma utilização destes conceitos nem sempre tão esclarecedora como se poderia desejar. Consequentemente, para além da necessidade de rever a metodologia para a definição das classes sociais portuguesas oitocentistas2, não se pode continuar a manter a «burguesia» como uma categoria operativa, sem que se façam esforços para preencher o vazio de conhecimento do concreto em que o seu uso se deve alicerçar. Caso contrá- rio, persistirá a excessiva fluidez na sua caracterização em subgrupos e na clarificação do seu comportamento perante os interesses económicos, polí- ticos, ideológicos e culturais que têm marcado tantos escritos sobre o período. As clivagens detectadas no seu seio têm sido um dos principais aspectos na avaliação do papel histórico da burguesia portuguesa, sendo três os cri- térios mais seguidos para este efeito. México Interdisciplinario/Interdisciplinary Mexico I, 2, verano/summer 2012 Masculinities in Robert Rodríguez’s Mexico Trilogy Alexandra Simon-López (University of Eastern Finland) 1) Introduction The aim of this article is to deconstructively unveil and critically discuss the various layers of masculinity and the notion of machismo used by Robert Rodríguez in his Mexico Trilogy , which comprises the films El Mariachi (1992), Desperado (1995), and Once upon a time in Mexico (2003). For the theoretical framework, I am interested in the interplay of socio- historical concepts of (Latin American) masculinity and the usage of masculine stereotypes in motion pictures, for which Connell’s (1995 and 2005) theory of hegemonic masculinity and Berg’s (2002) notions on Latin American stereotypes proved applicable. Connell presents hierarchically organised key categories of masculinity in terms of patriarchal power, starting with hegemonic masculinity which guarantees the continuation of men’s dominance over women because it can be perceived as “the pattern of practice (i.e., things done, not just a set of role expectations or an identity)” (Connell and Messerschmidt 2005: 832). According to Bradley (2007: 46), this form of identity is what “we refer to as “macho”: tough, competitive, self-reliant, controlling, aggressive and fiercely heterosexual.” Complicit, marginalized, and subordinate masculinities serve as associated categories, although the main emphasis for the analysis of the selected films will be placed upon hegemonic masculinity. In addition to this, I argue that Connell’s typology needs to be enhanced by including more hybrid types of masculinity as a means of resistance to patriarchal masculinity, as hybridity can be considered a means of “strategic reversal of the process of domination” (Bhabha 1994: 112).
