Late Cretaceous Mafic Dykes in the Dharwar Craton
Proc. Indian Acad. Sci. (Earth Planet. Sci.), Vol. 97, No. 1, July 1988, pp. 107-114. Printed in India. Late Cretaceous mafic dykes in the Dharwar craton ANIL KUMAR, Y J BHASKAR RAO, V M PADMA KUMARI, A M DAYAL and K GOPALAN National Geophysical Research Institute, Hyderabad 500007, India MS received 8 April 1988 Abstract. Palaeomagnetic, geochemical and geochronological studies have been conducted on a set of dolerite dykes intruding the Peninsular gneisses near Huliyurdurga town, Karnataka. as a reconnaissance survey indicated a Cretaceous age for them. The dykes are mainly tholeiitic in composition with their 87Sr/86Sr ratios tightly clustered around 0.7045. Their palaeomagnetic data (O,, = 329~ 1,, = - 55~ and the corresponding palaeopole coordinates (2p = 34~ Lp = 108~ are strikingly close to those of the Deccan Traps to the north. Whole rock K-Ar ages ofthese dykes ranging between 69 and 84 Ma are also similar to the range of K- Ar ages of the Deccan basalts. The chemical, palaeomagnetic and temporal coherence between the dykes and the Deccan basalts indicate that they may indeed be tectonically related events. Keywords. Cretaceous dykes; Deccan volcanism; geochronology; geochemistry; Palaeomagnetism. 1. Introduction In an attempt to understand the crustal conditions and stress systems during early-mid Proterozoic times in continental areas, a concerted study of various dyke swarms in Karnataka has been taken up as NGRI and IGCP-257 projects. As part of this programme, systematic sampling was carried out over several selected dyke swarms in parts of Tumkur and Hassan districts. Palaeomagnetic results on two dykes near Huliyurdurga (referred to in this paper hereafter as Huliyurdurga Cretaceous Dykes, HCD) differed markedly from the rest and indicated Cretaceous magnetic signatures. -

Chapter I the Hoysalas
CHAPTER I THE HOYSALAS 1 The Hoysalas I. Introduction i The Hoy sales, an indigenous dynasty of Icings, ruled for over three centuries over almost the whole of Karnataka, leaving a rich heritage of imperishable monuments of art and culture • From the position of petty tribal chiefs and later from that of vassals of more powerful neighbours such as the Cholas, they rose to power in the 11th century i.e., from 1000 A.D. 2 They proceeded to strengthen themselves in the southern part of Karnataka and ruled as contemporaries of the Seunas, from the 12th to 14th centuries, i.e., from 1100 A.D. - 1346 A.D. in the course of their rule, they subdued the local chiefs in the western region and also drove the Chola governors away from the Kannada country. At the time of the Kalachurl usurpation of the Chalukya sovereignty, the Hoysalas declared their independence from the Chalukyas whose feudatories they had been • Thus they were the most powerful dynasty towards the end of the 12th century. 2 II. Their place in history and Field of influence s The Hoysala dynasty symbolised the cultural achievement of Kamataka. In the realm of art, this dynasty remains difficult to surpass or even equal in its exquisite beauty, its divine conception of soul- stirring themes, and its perfect execution of the most delicate delineations of abstract ideas* Art lovers from all over the world consider the temples of Belur, Halebid and Somnathpur, as places of pilgrimage. The age of the Hoysalas could indeed be described as a Golden Period in the history of Kamataka, for the Hoysala monarchs ushered in economic prosperity, treated their subjects with the tender care of parents and adopted moral laws that could parallel the modem directive principles of state policy.
