Adventists

A group of American religious sects, the most familiar being the Seventh Day Adventists, who observe Saturday as the true sabbath. They were founded in 1831 or 1840 by William Miller (1782-1849). The Seventh Day Adventists were developed by Ellen Gould White in 1845.

Beliefs: The second coming of Christ; believers will be saved, but sects differ as to whether the unjust will be tortured in hell, annihilated or sleep eternally.

Catholic Apostolic (Irvingites)

Founded by Rev Edward Irving (1792-1834), mixture of primitive and present Catholic ritual, or founded by a friend of Irving in 1825.

Founded by Henry Drummond and others in 1832. They chose 12 apostles in 1834 who were to travel the world to prepare for the 2nd coming. The last apostle died in 1901 meaning that the church died out as only apostles could ordain priests.

Jehovah’s Witness, Russellites, Dawnites

Founded by Charles Taize Russell (1852-1916) in 1872, 1878 or 1881 as the International Bible Students after hearing an Adventist preacher.

1874 or 1884 formed into the Watch Tower Bible and Tract Society, named Jehovah’s Witness in 1931. They use the new world translation of the bible.

Beliefs: Second coming occured in 1914 and Armegeddon will come as soon as witness is complete. Sinners will have a second chance, dead progressively raised to fill vacant spaces after Armegeddon. Holy Communion once a year

Reject: The cross since it is a phallic symbol, Blood transfusions, all other churches, Holy Trinity since Jesus was created by God.

Organisation: President, Board of Directors, Religous servants, Zone servants, Service Directors (of Kingdom Halls), Special Pioneers (140 hours service a month), witnesses (10 hours service a month plus 12 magazines a week)

Latter Day Saints or Mormons

Founded by Joseph Smith (1805-1844) in 1823 or 1830 after finding golden plates and writing the Book of Mormon, a record of early American Indians who are identified as the lost ten tribes of Israel. Jesus is alleged to have appeared in America after his ascension. Headquarters Salt Lake City which they built.

Beliefs: They are chosen people all others are gentiles, Polygamy until 1890, second coming of Christ, God was human, Jesus will set up a new kingdom for 1000 years in America and Jerusalem, Lords supper with water since they forbid alcohol, tea, coffee, tobacco and other stimulants, one tenth of income to church.

In 1852 a group separated to become the Reorganised Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints with it's headquarters in Missouri.

They were numerous in the town in the 1850s
