Powell All Rights Reserved ii Dedicated to The Students of Truett Seminary and all other young people on whom the mantle of ministry will fall iii iv PREFACE Thomas Jefferson once described the presidency as “a splendid misery.” I think that is an apt description of the ministry. I know of no calling that is more rewarding, and at the same time, more demanding than being a minister. The modern minister faces a multitude of tasks that are both exciting and exacting. He must conduct funerals and weddings, often on the same day. He must be a scholar, a public speaker, an educator, a financier, a CEO, a personnel manager, a shepherd and a personal counselor. While still a student at Baylor University I became pastor of an open country church. I soon found myself confronted with many things I had seen and even been a part of in my home church, but to which I paid little attention until I was called on to do them myself. In the next 34 years I pastored churches of all sizes, my last church having more than 7,000 members. As I became pastor of larger churches I would ask young ministers to assist me in funerals, weddings, baptisms, so they could learn firsthand what to do. What I have recorded in this book are some of the things I tried to teach them. -

IThe type of Catholic “apologetics” which was the strength of religious teaching at St Kevin’s prepared my mind for John Henry Newman and later C.S. Lewis, who both provided confirmation of my religious beliefs. To the professional philosopher, Newman and C.S. Lewis might appear to be no more than popularizers of other men’s ideas. Yet I do not despise the popularizer, since it seems that there are few new objections to religious belief. What one normally encounters are new formulations of the old objections—except, of course, for those contemporary philosophic systems which, in complete self-contradiction, pretend to prove the uselessness of reason as a mechanism in the search for truth … In the last analysis, the “apologetics” we absorbed could not lift religion above dependence on an act of faith, but an act of faith sustained by, and consonant with, reason. It was not an act of faith standing, as it were, unsupported or contrary to reason ... Sheehan’s Apologetics and Christian Doctrine provided me, as a schoolboy at matriculation standard, with the rational justification for my act of faith in Catholic Christianity. When I examine what so many Catholic students at the same level are offered today, I stand appalled not merely at the intellectual poverty of the offering but at the ease with which so many so-called teachers of religion dismiss the intellect as a convincing support for religious belief in favour of highly subjective “religious experience”. -

When I was an English Anglican ordinand (late 1980s), I received four and a half hours explicit teaching on Anglicanism in three years full time train- ing. When I returned to teach at a theological college five years later, I was (I think) the first person appointed to an English Anglican theological col- lege with an explicit brief to teach Anglicanism. Since then there has been a modest explosion in the teaching of Anglicanism and in teaching resources. This latest resource, in the SCM study guide series, is a sign that teaching Anglicanism is now a mainstream commitment. There was once a deep reluctance to teach ‘Anglicanism’, partly because of significant scepticism that such a thing really existed – a scepticism which is still very much alive in England even if most of the rest of the Communion regards this scepticism as nonsensical – and perhaps also because we were anxious that actually trying to teach Anglicanism would expose its divisions and contradictions. However, certainly in England, we can no longer assume that students of Anglicanism are cradle Anglicans; we cannot assume that people will carry ‘proper’ Anglicanism in their DNA. If they are to live and minister fruitfully within the Anglican context, they must have an opportunity to study Anglicanism rigorously. Some of the ten- sions in the Anglican Communion and the Church of England are simply a result of unreflective assumptions about the content and methods of Anglicanism. -

Ministry to families must meet their real needs, pope says VATICAN CITY (CNS) — The Catholic Church cannot claim to safeguard marriage and family life if it simply repeats its traditional teaching without supporting, encouraging and caring for real families, especially when they struggle to live up to that teaching, Pope Francis said. “It’s not enough to repeat the value and importance of doctrine if we don’t safeguard the beauty of the family and if we don’t compassionately take care of its fragility and its wounds,” the pope said March 19 in a message to a Rome conference marking the fifth anniversary of Amoris Laetitia, his 2016 exhortation of marriage and family life. The conference, sponsored by the Dicastery for Laity, the Family and Life, the Diocese of Rome and the Pontifical John Paul II Theological Institute for the Sciences of Marriage and Family, kicked off celebrations of the “Amoris Laetitia Family Year,” which will conclude June 26, 2022, at the World Meeting of Families in Rome. Pope Francis told conference participants, most of whom were watching online, that his exhortation was meant to give a starting point for a “journey encouraging a new pastoral approach to the family reality.” “The frankness of the Gospel proclamation and the tenderness of accompaniment,” he said, must go hand in hand in the Church’s pastoral approach. The task of the Church, the pope said, is to help couples and families understand “the authentic meaning of their union and their love” as a “sign and image of Trinitarian love and the alliance between Christ and his church.” The Church’s message, he said, “is a demanding word that aims to free human relationships from the slaveries that often disfigure them and render them instable: the dictatorship of emotions; the exaltation of the provisional, which discourages lifelong commitments; the predominance of individualism; (and) fear of the future.” Marriage is a part of God’s plan for individuals, is the fruit of God’s grace and is a call “to be lived with totality, fidelity and gratuity,” the pope said. -

Guidelines for Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion
GUIDELINES FOR EXTRAORDINARY MINISTERS OF HOLY COMMUNION The ministry of distributing Holy Communion is the responsibility of priests and deacons. It is understood that at regularly scheduled parish Masses, concelebrating priests and the deacons present and assisting at that Mass (unless impeded by physical reasons or other sufficient cause) will participate in the distribution of Holy Communion. If these ordinary ministers are not sufficient to distribute the Sacrament within a reasonable amount of time, then extraordinary ministers of Holy Communion may be invited to assist them. Canon 910.2: The extraordinary minister of Holy Communion is an acolyte or other member of the Christian faithful deputed in accord with Canon 230.3. Canon 230.3: When the need of the Church warrants it and ministers are lacking, lay persons, even if they are not lectors or acolytes, can also supply certain of their duties, namely, to exercise the ministry of the word, to preside over liturgical prayers, to confer baptism, and to distribute Holy Communion in accord with the prescripts of the law. The following policies are to be followed in the Archdiocese of New Orleans in regard to these extraordinary ministers of Holy Communion in parish celebrations. In instances other than parochial settings, the Office of Worship will be consulted. 1. Only adults (18 years and older) are to serve as extraordinary ministers of Holy Communion. Special permission has been granted by Archbishop Gregory M. Aymond which permits High School seniors to serve as extraordinary ministers of Holy Communion after completing specialized training. This special permission expires upon graduation. -

Systematic Theology 2.2 (Marks of a True Church) Introduction: If you move to a new town, you have to find a new church. The search for a new church can be difficult and frustrating. If you pick up the Yellow Pages and look under “Church,” you are likely to confront a bewildering array of possibilities. Perhaps you already have some fairly definite ideas of what you want in a church. You may be looking for a good youth group or active senior citizens group. You may want a powerful preacher or a certain kind of music. You may be very loyal to one denomination or you may like to “shop around.” What should you be looking for in choosing a new church? Your first concern should be that the church be a “true church.” You do not want to choose a church that is part of a sect or a cult. You do not want a church that still bears the name of church, but whose lampstand Christ has removed (Revelation 1–3). How do you recognize a true church? There are all kinds and types of churches, providing consumers multiple options from which to pick and choose what they like. This was somewhat true in the time of the Reformation, as there were Roman Catholic, Orthodox, Anabaptist, Lutheran, and Reformed churches. Today the situation is even more confusing, since so many organizations call themselves churches. We have everything from theological cults, such as the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, to thousands of garden-variety nondenominational churches, to the so-called “mainline” churches, and everything in between. -
