Systematic Theology 2.2 (Marks of a True Church) Introduction: If you move to a new town, you have to find a new church. The search for a new church can be difficult and frustrating. If you pick up the Yellow Pages and look under “Church,” you are likely to confront a bewildering array of possibilities. Perhaps you already have some fairly definite ideas of what you want in a church. You may be looking for a good youth group or active senior citizens group. You may want a powerful preacher or a certain kind of music. You may be very loyal to one denomination or you may like to “shop around.” What should you be looking for in choosing a new church? Your first concern should be that the church be a “true church.” You do not want to choose a church that is part of a sect or a cult. You do not want a church that still bears the name of church, but whose lampstand Christ has removed (Revelation 1–3). How do you recognize a true church? There are all kinds and types of churches, providing consumers multiple options from which to pick and choose what they like. This was somewhat true in the time of the Reformation, as there were Roman Catholic, Orthodox, Anabaptist, Lutheran, and Reformed churches. Today the situation is even more confusing, since so many organizations call themselves churches. We have everything from theological cults, such as the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, to thousands of garden-variety nondenominational churches, to the so-called “mainline” churches, and everything in between. -

Kindergarten Focus - Many Signs of God’s Love Scripture – Genesis 1:31 – God looked at everything He had made, and found it very good. Objective: To help children grow in their understanding of the People of God as God’s family and as a sign of God’s love. Some ideas: o Share pictures of your parish pastor, Cardinal Tobin, and Pope Francis; Explain that they each serve God and our Catholic family in a special way, and Cardinal Tobin is now serving God in a special way as our new Archbishop. o Point out the Scarlet red color as a sign of being a Cardinal o Use the Cardinal and Pope Craft for Catholic Kids activity o Pray for Cardinal Tobin and the Archdiocese of Newark. For discussion: o Does God love us very much? (Yes) o How much does God love us? Versions and Translations the Following Outlines Some of the Key
Versions and Translations The following outlines some of the key characteristics of several Bibles currently in use. A number of the Bible translations most popular in the Western world today can be found in searchable form online (see: http://www.ntgateway.com/bible-translations/). The King James Version (KJV) The translation was planned from 1604 and published in 1611 under the auspices of King James VI of England. This Bible has become one of the most influential English books in modern Western civilization. It served as a unifier of English politics and religious disagreements. The King James Bible uses an economy of words and voices beautiful cadences that have led many to call it elegant. It remains a favorite in many Protestant circles. The Douay-Rheims Bible The first English translation for Roman Catholics was produced in Douay and Rheims in France from 1582-1610. It is based not upon the Hebrew and Greek text but rather the Vulgate, the Latin translation that was the authoritative Bible for the Catholic Church for much of its history. Its close adherence to the Latin makes many passages difficult for contemporary readers to understand, and it has largely fallen into disuse in many Catholic quarters. It is sometimes called the Rheims-Douay Bible. The American Standard Version (ASV) The growing sense that the KJV was based on less-than-ideal manuscripts and philological knowledge led to the British Revised Version in 1885. An American edition, the ASV, came out in 1901 and represented several hundred further emendations to suit its American audience. The ASV is sometimes thought of as by students of biblical languages as a particularly “wooden” translation, and it does in some respects seek to replicate the feel of the original, for example in using “Jehovah” rather than “Lord,” or “Sheol” rather than “grave/Hell.” However, the ASV is also quite euphemistic in places. -

It is a precious fact that his widow, Stephanie, and many of his children and grandchildren have attended to witness this tribute to his ongoing contributions to Australian society. I propose to recount his life’s journey. I will then seek to show the relevance of his approach to contentious controversies in the case of the three ethical questions: those concerning bioethical controversies; the treatment of refugee applicants and the issue of same-sex marriage. Modern Alternative Popes* Magnus Lundberg Uppsala University The Second Vatican Council (1962-1965) is arguably the most important event in modern Catholicism, and a major act on the twentieth-century religious scene at large. On several points, the conciliar fathers made changes in how the Catholic Church perceived the modern world. The language in the decrees was different from earlier councils’, and the bishops opened up for ecumenism and interreligious dialogue, seeing at least “seeds of truth” in other religious traditions. The conciliar fathers also voted in favour of liberty of religion, as meaning something more than the right to practise Catholic faith. A very concrete effect of the Council was the introduction of the New Mass Order (Novus Ordo Missae) in 1969 that replaced the traditional Roman rite, decreed by Pius V in 1570. Apart from changes in content, under normal circumstances, the new mass should be read in the vernacular, not in Latin as before. Though many Catholics welcomed the reforms of Vatican II, many did not. In the period just after the end of the Council, large numbers of priests and nuns were laicized, few new priest candidates entered the seminaries, and many laypeople did not recognize the church and the liturgy, which they had grown up with. In the post- conciliar era, there developed several traditionalist groups that criticized the reforms and in particular the introduction of the Novus Ordo. Their criticism could be more or less radical, and more or less activist. Many stayed in their parishes and attended mass there, but remained faithful to traditional forms of devotions and paid much attention to modern Marian apparitions. -

Notes on Terminology and Transliteration A few words about nomenclature, translation, and transliteration are in order. First, regarding usage and spelling of the term “tsar,” because of the potential links between the spelling “czar” and anti-Russian sentiment, a subject that turned out to be beyond the scope of this study, when translating from French sources, I have retained whatever spelling (“czar,” “tzar,” or “tsar”) appears in the original. When not quoting, I use the spelling “tsar” in conformity with accepted standards of translit- eration from Russian. In diplomacy, the official title of the ruler of imperial Russia was “emperor,” not “tsar.” A second point of usage concerns the descriptor “Greek” to refer to the Eastern Orthodox faith or the Russian Church in general. In the nineteenth century, westerners commonly used the descriptors “Greek” and “Russian” as synonyms when talking about the Eastern Church. For Roman Catholic publicists, the terms “Greek Church” (l’Église grecque) and “Russian Church” (l’Église russe) served a polemical purpose, highlighting the Eastern Church’s noncatholicity. They also did not refer to the Eastern Church as “Orthodox” unless they used the term in italics, as the equivalent of scare quotes, to in- dicate that the orthodoxy was only purported. Consequently, in this study the modifier “Greek” usually refers to a religious and not an ethnic group. Context should make the exceptions clear. It should also be noted that in their polemics with Roman Catholics, Orthodox priest-publicists referred to their church as the “Russian Church” (l’Église de Russie; l’Église russe) if talk- ing specifically about Russia’s established church, or as the “Eastern Church” (l’Église orientale), Eastern Catholic Church (l’Église catholique orientale), or Orthodox Catholic Church (l’Église catholique orthodoxe) when talking about Orthodoxy more generally. -

Pilgrimage for Cardinal-Designate O’Brien’s Elevation to the College of Cardinals A pilgrimage to the Vatican has been organized for Catholics from the Archdiocese of Baltimore and others of good will interested in attending the February 18 consistory during which Cardinal-designate Edwin F. O’Brien, Pro Grand Master of the Equestrian Order of the Holy Sepulcher of Jerusalem and Apostolic Administrator of the Archdiocese of Baltimore, will be elevated to the College of Cardinals. Pope Benedict XVI named the Archbishop a Cardinal on January 6, 2012. Cardinals serve as advisors to the Pope and are eligible to vote in a Papal election until their 80th birthday. The pilgrimage is being organized by Peter’s Way Tours Inc. (800-225-7662 ext.14) and includes flights, hotels, and access to the Consistory ceremony and an audience with Pope Benedict XVI. Three options are available: February 14-21, February 15-21 and February 16-21. A brochure with details is online at www.archbalt.org. On Saturday, February 18, Pope Benedict XVI will create the 22 new cardinals. During a ceremony at St. Peter’s Basilica, he will give each a traditional scarlet biretta (a square hat with three ridges), a ring, and assign each his titular church in Rome. The Dilemma of Anti-Catholicism in American Travel Writing, circa 1790-1830 Daniel Kilbride John Carroll University The decades between 1790 and 1830 have rightly been seen as a lull between the anti- Catholic heights of the colonial and antebellum periods. The French alliance, the imperative of religious pluralism and civility under the Bill of Rights, and the small number of Catholics residing in the United States all conspired to reduce popular intolerance toward Catholics in the post-Revolutionary period – although it needs to be recognized that anti-Catholicism remained an respectable form of prejudice throughout this era. In this paper I want to show how American travelers in Europe contributed to the early national reassessment of Roman Catholicism. Travelers enjoyed enhanced credibility because of their first-hand experience in continental Europe. They reinforced some existing prejudices, such as the danger posed by the close relationship between the Church and European despotisms. In other ways they undermined prejudices and introduced new, more positive ways to assess Catholicism. They reaffirmed the historical connection between American culture and sacred art and architecture. They also reassessed traditional notions of Catholic ritual and piety, which Americans had traditionally derided as little better than superstition. Some travelers went beyond recognizing Catholic practice as a legitimate form of Christianity. In a sharp departure from convention, they articulated a kind of envy, arguing that Catholic ritual was in some ways superior, more genuine, than American Protestant practice. Finally, I want to show how these tentative, preliminary assessments informed American attitudes to Catholicism in the antebellum period. After 1830 anti-Catholicism did acquire a new breadth and intensity, and some travelers contributed to this trend.
