At a recent Parish Assembly, St Helier electors and ratepayers gave enthusiastic support to three restaurant applications due to open in the Parish, which will between them create more than 150 jobs. It's extremely encouraging to see such confidence in the hospitality sector, not least because the enjoyment of a meal out is something you can't do on the internet. But as an activity, it can also have excellent health benefits, regardless of factors such as age, and regardless of whether you can actually swim or not. Heather Uwins, who runs a local swimming company, explains more.

Swimming is a healthy activity that can continue for a . Although it’s easy to find excuses not to go to the pool, anyone who makes the effort soon feels the benefits once they are in the water. Swimming (or learning to swim) is a full body exercise that uses practically all of the muscles through the various strokes. So it’s great for helping to develop general strength, cardiovascular fitness and endurance. As well as helping improve general fitness, there are psychological benefits that come with regular swimming. The water, particularly if at the right temperature, helps you relax in body and mind. A session in the water can set you up for a busy day or leave you refreshed and alert at the end of one. There are also benefits for people recovering from injuries or who suffer from conditions such as arthritis. And it’s never too late to learn to swim. With the right level of support and encouragement, most people are able to overcome their nervousness, regardless of age. So what are you waiting for – come on in, the water’s lovely. For more details on the wellbeing benefits of swimming, or information on the

current programme of lessons, contact Heather Uwins on 852678. f Town Crier-NOVEMBER2012-PRINT_Governance style ideas 02/11/2012 17:09 Page 25
