POSTER PRESENTATIONS ______________________________________________________________ Poster Presentations 423 IMPROVEMENT OF RELEASE METHOD FOR APHIDOLETES APHIDIMYZA (DIPTERA: CECIDOMYIIDAE) BASED ON ECOLOGICAL AND BEHAVIORAL STUDIES Junichiro Abe and Junichi Yukawa Entomological Laboratory, Kyushu University, Japan ABSTRACT. In many countries, Aphidoletes aphidimyza (Rondani) has been used effectively as a biological control agent against aphids, particularly in greenhouses. In Japan, A. aphidimyza was reg- istered as a biological control agent in April 1999, and mass-produced cocoons have been imported from The Netherlands and United Kingdom since mass-rearing methods have not yet been estab- lished. In recent years, the effect of imported A. aphidimyza on aphid populations was evaluated in greenhouses at some Agricultural Experiment Stations in Japan. However, no striking effect has been reported yet from Japan. The failure of its use in Japan seems to be caused chiefly by the lack of detailed ecological or behavioral information of A. aphidimyza. Therefore, we investigated its ecological and behavioral attributes as follows: (1) the survival of pupae in relation to the depth of pupation sites; (2) the time of adult emergence in response to photoperiod during the pupal stage; (3) the importance of a hanging substrate for successful mating; and (4) the influence of adult size and nutrient status on adult longev- ity and fecundity. (1) A commercial natural enemy importer in Japan suggests that users divide cocoons into groups and put each group into a plastic container filled with vermiculite to a depth of 100 mm. However, we believe this is too deep for A. aphidimyza pupae, since under natural conditions mature larvae spin their cocoons in the top few millimeters to a maxmum depth of 30 mm. -

More than500 taxa below the family level wereinventoried, and each listing includes relative frequency of encounter, life stages collected, and dominant role in the greenleaf manzanita community. Specific host relationships are included for some predators and parasitoids. Herbivores, predators, and parasitoids comprised the majority (80 percent) of identified insects and related taxa. All four morphs share the same cuticular hydrocarbons, with the major components being n-alkanes (C21-C33). 3. The minor components are 3-, ! 1- and 13-methyl branched alkanes and Z-10-monoenes. 4. Two-way analysis of variance (sex and wing morph) shows that males and females have the same profiles, whereas four components showed significant differences between wingtype morphs. 5. Only one of these four hydrocarbons (n-C31) was a major component. 6. The cuticular hydrocarbons of larvae of the lesser grain borer, Rhyzopertha dominica, were also characterized. 7. Although the beetles' major components were the same n-alkanes as those found on the adult parasites, their minor components were different. 8. Thus, the beetle larvae have no alkenes, but instead have 3-, 11-, 13- and 15-methylbranched alkanes, as well as a series of 11,15-dimethylalkanes. -

Sci., 38: 29–34. A laboratory experiment was carried out on stored wheat infested by the stored product mite Acarus siro and beetle Oryzaephilus surinamensis. The initial infestation was 150 mites of A. siro and 15 beetles of O. surinamensis per 1 kg of wheat. The predatory mite Cheyletus eruditus and parasitoid Cephalonomia tarsalis were added in the ratio 1:20 and 1:12, repectively. Three combinations were tested: (1) mites and (2) beetles separately, and (3) mites and beetles together. The experiment ran for three months at 22°C and 75% RH. The pests were suppressed by their antagonists in all combinations. Synchronous application of both natural enemies resulted in better control of O. surinamensis through an enhanced effect of both antagonists. Cephalonomia Hyalinipennis (Hymenoptera: Bethylidae) and Its Alternative Host, the Stored Product Pest Caulophilus Oryzae (Coleoptera: Curculionidae)

Howard1* and Gabriela Pérez-Lachaud2 Cuticular hydrocarbons of an ectoparasitic wasp attacking two beetle hosts have been identified and examined for the influ- ence of age, gender, mating status, and host on hydrocarbon composition. The 37 wasp hydrocarbons identified consisted of a series of n-alkanes (C16 to C33), 3-, 5-, 9-, 10-, 11-, and 12-methyl alkanes and a series of Z-7 and Z-9 monoenes (C23:1 to C27:1). One C25:2 diene was found. No effects of hydrocarbon composition as a function of age, gender, or mating status were found for the wasps. Wasps reared on Hypothenemus hampei, however, had 12/37 significant abundance differences to those reared on Caulophilus oryzae, although all but one of these differences were for components in less than 2% relative abundance. The C25:2 diene from wasps reared on H. hampei was present in about 10% whereas from wasps reared on C. oryzae it was present in about 2%. The hydrocarbons of one host for this wasp, the coffee berry borer (Coleoptera: Scolytidae), have been previously reported [Howard and Infante, Ann. Entomol. Soc. Am. 89:700–709 (1996)]. The hydrocarbons of the alternative host, C. oryzae (Coleoptera: Curculionidae) consists of n-alkanes (C17 to C31), 3-, 4-, 5-, 7-, 9-, 11-, 12-, 13-, 14-, and 15-methyl alkanes, and a series of dimethyl alkanes of the series 3, 17-; 5, 11-; 5, 17-; 7, 11-; 7, 13-; 13, 17-; and 15, 19-. -
