2 The Board of Visitors 100 Years 1908-2008 Generations of women … Serving the health care needs of the Phoenix community 3 Introduction What an appropriate time to research and write our history! Little did our 16 charter members know, as they visited the isolated tuberculosis patients at St. Luke’s Home, that one hundred years later a group of 180 women bearing the same name, The Board of Visitors, would still be helping those in need. With the sale of St. Luke’s hospital in 1994, The Board of Visitors closed an important chapter of its history. A new chapter began with the members’ continuing commitment to raise and provide funds to support health care needs in the community, true to the mission of The Board of Visi- tors. As we celebrate the 100-year tradition of The Board of Visitors, let us all reflect on what an honor it is to be members of the oldest charitable organization in Metro- politan Phoenix. HART William S. Hart came to the movies in 1914 from a long line of theatrical ex perience, mostly Shakespearean and while to many he is the strong, silent Western hero of film he is also the peer of John Ford as a major force in shaping and developing this genre we enjoy, the Western. In 1889 in what is to become Oklahoma Territory the Cherokee Strip is just a graz ing area owned by Indians and worked day and night be the itinerant cowboys called 'tumbleweeds'. Alas, it is the end of the old West as the homesteaders are moving in . Hart becomes involved with a homesteader's daughter and her evil brother who has a scheme to jump the line as "sooners". The scenes of the gigantic land rush is one of the most noted action sequences in film history.

CONSTRUCTING, CONSUMING, AND COMPLICATING THE HUMAN-NATURE BINARY: COMMUNICATION PRACTICES IN FOREST ENVIRONMENTAL EDUCATION BY ELIZABETH A. DICKINSON B.A., Communication Studies, California State University, San Bernardino, 1996 M.A., Communication Studies, New Mexico State University, 1998 DISSERTATION Submitted in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy Communication The University of New Mexico Albuquerque, New Mexico May, 2010 iii DEDICATION This project is dedicated to my two inspirations over the last year and a half—my young precious niece, Audrey K. Dickinson, and the beautiful forests with whom I spent so much time. May you flourish and guide us through our challenging and ever-changing human ways. iv ACKNOWLEDGMENTS I am grateful and indebted to those who made this project a great joy. This experience was significant due to the relationships I forged, with people and nature alike. In keeping with a theme in this project, I use the “parts of a tree” as a metaphor to recognize the individuals who made my journey memorable.
