KEENELAND NUMBERS ARE TROUBLING Teruya Yoshida of Shadai Farm Has Purchased the Recent G1 Matron S FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 25, 2020 TAKING STOCK: KENTUCKY SUPREME COURT RULING COULD PUT END TO HISTORICAL HORSE RACING KEENELAND NUMBERS by Bill Finley In a unanimous decision announced Thursday that could result ARE TROUBLING in a large cuts to purses in the state, the Kentucky Supreme Court ruled that Historical Horse Racing (HHR) Machines do not qualify as pari-mutuel wagering and are therefore illegal under state law. The decision directly covered only one form of the machines, the Encore or Exacta system, but it appears that it will be applied to all forms and brands of HHR. The plaintiff in the case was the Family Trust Foundation of Kentucky, a conservative group which describes itself as a foundation that Ahas stood as a continual bulwark for families and the values that make families strong.@ Cont. p3 IN TDN EUROPE TODAY CHAMPERS ELYSEES SOLD TO YOSHIDA The grounds at Keeneland September | Keeneland The last out G1 Matron S. winner will carry the colours of Shadai Farm’s Teruya Yoshida in the G1 Sun Chariot S. on by Sid Fernando Oct. 3, and will remain in the care of Johnny Murtagh. This was as predictable as saying that an egg dropped on concrete from six feet would break. So, what's the damage? Through the first 10 sessions that ended with Book 5 on Wednesday, 2,129 yearlings had sold for a gross of $245,278,700 and an average price of $115,208, with a median of $50,000. The final two sessions Thursday and Friday that comprise the most inexpensive horses in the sale in Book 6 will not add much to the gross, dropping the average further. Last year, the penultimate session added $2,299,500 to the gross with an average price on the day of $10,646, and the last day added $1,340,300 with an average price of $6,382. Based on the numbers for the last two days in 2019, you can project that this year's sale will end with a gross of about $249,000,000 for about 2,500 head sold, which suggests an average of about $100,000 or slightly under, versus 2,974 yearlings sold for $372,348,400 with an average price of $125,201 and a median of $47,000 one year ago. One avenue could be to craft and have legislation passed that would permit their use. In its ruling, the Court hinted at just that. AIf a change, however, in the long-accepted definition of pari- mutuel wagering is to be made, that change must be made by the people of this Commonwealth through their duly-elected legislators, not by an appointed administrative body and not by the judiciary,@ the ruling read. • Drug Education and Its Publics in 1980S Britain
International Journal of Drug Policy 88 (2021) 103029 Contents lists available at ScienceDirect International Journal of Drug Policy journal homepage: www.elsevier.com/locate/drugpo Policy Analysis Just say know: Drug education and its publics in 1980s Britain Alex Mold Centre for History in Public Health, London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine, 15-17 Tavistock Place, London, WC1H 9SH, United Kingdom ARTICLE INFO ABSTRACT Keywords: Until the 1980s, anti-drug education campaigns in the UK were rare. This article examines the reasons behind a Heroin policy shift that led to the introduction of mass media drug education in the mid 1980s. It focuses on two Drug education campaigns. ‘Heroin Screws You Up’ ran in England, and ‘Choose Life Not Drugs’ ran in Scotland. The campaigns Health education were different in tone, with ‘Heroin Screws You Up’ making use of fear and ‘shock horror’ tactics, whereas History of drug use ‘Choose Life Not Drugs’ attempted to deliver a more positive health message. ‘Heroin Screws You Up’ was criticised by many experts for its stigmatising approach. ‘Choose Life Not Drugs’ was more favourably received, but both campaigns ran into difficulties with the wider public. The messages of these campaigns were appro priated and deliberately subverted by some audiences. This historical policy analysis points towards a complex and nuanced relationship between drug education campaigns and their audiences, which raises wider questions about health education and its ‘publics’. In April 1986, the cast of teen TV soap, Grange Hill, released a song wanted to be seen to take action on drugs, leading to the introduction of titled ‘Just say no’.

Virgil, Aeneid 11 (Pallas & Camilla) 1–224, 498–521, 532–96, 648–89, 725–835 G Latin text, study aids with vocabulary, and commentary ILDENHARD INGO GILDENHARD AND JOHN HENDERSON A dead boy (Pallas) and the death of a girl (Camilla) loom over the opening and the closing part of the eleventh book of the Aeneid. Following the savage slaughter in Aeneid 10, the AND book opens in a mournful mood as the warring parti es revisit yesterday’s killing fi elds to att end to their dead. One casualty in parti cular commands att enti on: Aeneas’ protégé H Pallas, killed and despoiled by Turnus in the previous book. His death plunges his father ENDERSON Evander and his surrogate father Aeneas into heart-rending despair – and helps set up the foundati onal act of sacrifi cial brutality that caps the poem, when Aeneas seeks to avenge Pallas by slaying Turnus in wrathful fury. Turnus’ departure from the living is prefi gured by that of his ally Camilla, a maiden schooled in the marti al arts, who sets the mold for warrior princesses such as Xena and Wonder Woman. In the fi nal third of Aeneid 11, she wreaks havoc not just on the batt lefi eld but on gender stereotypes and the conventi ons of the epic genre, before she too succumbs to a premature death. In the porti ons of the book selected for discussion here, Virgil off ers some of his most emoti ve (and disturbing) meditati ons on the tragic nature of human existence – but also knows how to lighten the mood with a bit of drag.
