With <a href="http://www.poemhunter.com/charles-g-d-roberts/">Charles G.D. Roberts</a>, <a href="http://www.poemhunter.com/bliss-carman/">Bliss Carman</a> and <a href="http://www.poemhunter.com/archibald- lampman/">Archibald Lampman</a>, he is classed as one of Canada's Confederation Poets. Scott was also a Canadian lifetime civil servant who served as deputy superintendent of the Department of Indian Affairs from 1913 to 1932, and is "best known" today for "advocating the assimilation of Canada’s First Nations peoples" in that capacity. <b>Life</b> Scott was born in Ottawa, Ontario, the son of Rev. William Scott and Janet MacCallum. He was educated at Stanstead Wesleyan Academy. Early in life, he became an accomplished pianist. Scott wanted to be a doctor, but family finances were precarious, so in 1879 he joined the federal civil service. As the story goes, "William Scott might not have money [but] he had connections in high places. Among his acquaintances was the prime minister, Sir John A. Macdonald, who agreed to meet with Duncan. As chance would have it, when Duncan arrived for his interview, the prime minister had a memo on his desk from the Indian Branch of the Department of the Interior asking for a temporary copying clerk. Making a quick decision while the serious young applicant waited in front of him, Macdonald wrote across the request: 'Approved. -

Hierophants of Decadence: Bliss Carman and Arthur Symons Rita Dirks Ambrose University Canada has never produced a major man of letters whose work gave a violent shock to the sensibilities of Puritans. There was some worry about Carman, who had certain qualities of the fin de siècle poet, but how mildly he expressed his queer longings! (E. K. Brown) Decadence came to Canada softly, almost imperceptibly, in the 1880s, when the Confederation poet Bliss Carman published his first poems and met the English chronicler and leading poet of Decadence, Arthur Symons. The event of Decadence has gone largely unnoticed in Canada; there is no equivalent to David Weir’s Decadent Culture in the United States: Art and Literature Against the American Grain (2008), as perhaps has been the fate of Decadence elsewhere. As a literary movement it has been, until a recent slew of publications on British Decadence, relegated to a transitional or threshold period. As Jason David Hall and Alex Murray write: ‘It is common practice to read [...] decadence as an interstitial moment in literary history, the initial “falling away” from high Victorian literary values and forms before the bona fide novelty of modernism asserted itself’.1 This article is, in part, an attempt to bring Canadian Decadence into focus out of its liminal state/space, and to establish Bliss Carman as the representative Canadian Decadent. -

"A STRANGE AESTHETIC FERMENT Malcolm Ross w. ONE LOOKS DOWN over Fredericton from the hills where Charles Roberts and Bliss Carman once took their long hikes with George Parkin, one still sees the spire of Bishop Medley's Cathedral rising above a city hidden in elms. Old Frederictonians, whether they be Anglican or Roman, Baptist or Marxist, think first of their Cathedral whenever they think of home. George Goodridge Roberts, the father of Charles and Theodore (and Bliss Carman's uncle) was Canon of the Cathedral and Rector of the parish church of St. Anne's. George Parkin, headmaster of the Collegiate School in Fredericton, was an active Cathedral layman. Something should be said about the coincidence at just the right time of the Tractarian Bishop, his Gothic Cathedral, the great teacher whose classroom had no walls, "the new music, the new colours, the new raptures of Pre-Raphaelite poetry",1 and the young and eager spirits ready to respond to the peculiar genius of this place and this time. "The Fredericton of those days", Charles G. D. Roberts recalls, "was a good place for a poet to be." It was "stirring with a strange aesthetic ferment." Tiny as it was, with no more than six thousand inhabitants, Fredericton was nonetheless a capital city, a university city, a cathedral city : She had little of the commercial spirit, and I fear was hardly as democratic as is nowaday considered the proper thing to be. But she was not stagnant, and she was not smug. Instead of expecting all the people to be cut of one pattern, she seemed to prefer them to be just a little queer... -

In his book The Friendship of Nature, Bliss Carman writes: There is in reality a power in Nature to rest and console us but few are so strong as to be able to rely on that lonely beneficence; and we must seek the gentler aid of our fellow beings. David B. Quinn and Neil M. Cheshire QNE OF THE POEMS IN ARCHIBALD LAMPMAN'S Alcyone volume of 1899 is "The Song of Pan" which was first published in the July 1896 issue of Harper's Magazine. In this brief lyric, Lampman recounts the legend of how Pan, the Arcadian goat-god who is the patron of shepherds and of forests, came to have a pipe made of seven reeds. "Mad with love," Pan had "pursued" the maiden Syrinx until, when he "had nearly / Touched her," she was changed by the nymphs of Arcadia into a "reed."1 This "reed" was cut by the sorrowing god and "Deftly fashioned" into "Seven / Pipes" (the syrinx) through which he "poured his pain" over the loss of the maiden "Unto earth and heaven / In a piercing strain." Lampman concludes "The Song of Pan" by drawing a parallel between the "god" and the "poet." Both are lured on by "Beauty," he observes, which "Flies, and ere they know it / Like a wraith is gone" ; Then they seek to borrow Pleasure still from wrong, And with smiling sorrow Turn it to a song. In "The Song of Pan" Lampman uses the goat-god's bitter-sweet song on the syrinx as a parallel for the joy and pain (his somewhat lame oxymoron is "smiling sorrow") of the creative act. -

CARMAN BY THE SEA M. M. Ross HE reputation of Bliss Carman has suffered severely from T recent literary criticism. Once regarded as the finest of Canadian poets, Carman has shrunk in stature with each new critical estimate of our poetic achievement. In part, as Wilfred Eggleston has suggested, this change in critical opinion can be explained by new fads in thought and technique, and by the emergence of a sensibility too tortured and tense for an appreciation of Carman's melodic manner. To be sure, Carman's loose optimistic "philosophy"-compound ed of notions taken almost at random from Emerson, the Pla tonic tradition, Buddhism, Christianity-has little meaning for the new poetic intelligence schooled in the sharp dialectic ofT. S. Eliot. It is not difficult to see why a poet like Archibald Lampman, with few ideas but with a strong sense of descriptive detail, should suffer less than Carman from our current reaction to the poetry of the period. Carman attempted more than Lamp man and for his pains appears now merely to have been more pretentious. Bliss Carman has also fared ill at the hands of some of our more self-conscious nationalists who would be quick enough to forgive him his loose thinking and his romantic sensibility if only they could point to him and say, "There is a Canadian.'' Now it is, of course, true that Carman refers rather frequently to the Maple Tree. But the depressing discovery has, alas, been made by scholars that Carman's Maple Tree grew in a distant Connecticd garden and not in Canada at all. -

The Canadian Encyclopedia says that he is "generally considered the finest of Canada's late 19th-century poets in English." Lampman is classed as one of Canada's Confederation Poets, a group which also includes <a href="http://www.poemhunter.com/sir-charles-gd-roberts/">Charles G.D. Roberts</a>, <a href="http://www.poemhunter.com/bliss-william- carman/">Bliss Carman</a>, and <a href="http://www.poemhunter.com/duncan-campbell-scott/">Duncan Campbell Scott</a>. <b>Life</b> Archibald Lampman was born at Morpeth, Ontario, a village near Chatham, the son of Archibald Lampman, an Anglican clergyman. "The Morpeth that Lampman knew was a small town set in the rolling farm country of what is now western Ontario, not far from the shores of Lake Erie. The little red church just east of the town, on the Talbot Road, was his father’s charge." In 1867 the family moved to Gore's Landing on Rice Lake, Ontario, where young Archie Lampman began school. In 1868 he contracted rheumatic fever, which left him lame for some years and with a permanently weakened heart. Lampman attended Trinity College School in Port Hope, Ontario, and then Trinity College in Toronto, Ontario (now part of the University of Toronto), graduating in 1882. -

MORE REMINISCENCES OF BLISS CARMAN CHARLES G. D. ROBERTS N the previous chapter of these reminiscences I omitted to I speak of Carman's trip to England which he made soon after his graduation from the University of New Brunswick. There were two reasons for this omission. I was not in close personal touch with him at the time,-1881-82; and those months spent in London and Oxford and Edinburgh seem to have left so slight a mark on his development. But the fact that they did affect him so slightly calls for some explanation. He was not yet ripe for the experience. He knew neither what he wanted to get from it nor how to get anything from it. He was, as I have already pointed out, slow to mature; and more over, then-as always throughout his life to the very end-he was peculiarly dependent upon personal contacts. Sympathetic companionship meant everything to him. He had no gli'f.: for solitude. In Robinson Crusoe's place I don't think he -would have taken the trouble to survive. When he reached London he felt himself utterly alone, except for the books to which he fled for refuge in the bOokshop of John Bumpus on Oxford Street. Daunted and homesick, he moved on to Oxford, which called to him with the ardent voice of Parkin and the haunting cadences of "The Scholar Gipsy." But even here, after the first thrill of finding boyish dreams come true, and satisfying himself that the tranquil Isis and the storied piles of Magdalen and Oriel were even lovelier than their names, he was presently homesick again.
