2013 A CELEBRATION OF PUBLICATIONS, CREATIVE WORKS, AND GRANTS

Wednesday, October 23, 2013 University Ballroom 3:30-5:30 p.m.

Sponsored by The Division of Academic Affairs At its best, a university is a collection of individuals ‐‐ students and faculty ‐‐ focused on learning and discovering new knowledge. For this goal to be realized, a critical element is having faculty members deeply engaged with their disciplines. Scholarship, in the form of journal articles, book chapters, monographs and similar endeavors, creative activity which can take an even wider range of forms, and funded research which explores the boundaries of their disciplines all contribute to such engagement. Through such participation, faculty members stay at the growing edges of their fields, and in so doing, they enrich their intellectual lives as well as those of their undergraduate and graduate students.

As in previous years, I invite each participant at this event, which showcases intellectual engagement in all the forms listed above, to browse the contributions of your colleagues, ask questions, and celebrate the intellectual vitality of our university community. Each year as this event grows and widens its reach and audience, it continues to inspire me and impress me. I am sure it will do the same for you. Dr. Blair M. Lord Provost and Vice President of Academic Affairs

2014 Recipient of the Edwin L. “Bud” May Award Peter Ping Liu, Ph.D.

Dr. Peter Ping Liu has been a faculty in the School of Technology since 1991. In 2010, he worked closely with Dr. Robert Chesnut and many faculty members across the campus, to help EIU establish the Center for Clean Energy Research and Education (CENCERE). Since the founding of CENCERE, he worked with many staff and leaders of EIU to forge a partnership with Charleston Area Charitable Foundation, to acquire a laboratory biomass gasification system and other instrument for biomass research, and to eventually support the construction of a CENCERE research building.

Currently, he serves as the principal investigator for a project funded by the National Science Foundation, dealing with biomass renewable energy research and education, with collaborators of Dr. Rose Gong of College of Education, Drs. Rendong Bai, Jerry Cloward, David Melton and Isaac Slaven of the Lumpkin College of Business and Applied Sciences. In addition, he has secured two other projects funded by Illinois Sustainable Technology Center at University of Illinois at Urbana‐Champaign, to investigate ways of utilizing biomass gasification ash in concrete structures, and to conduct gasification study on pellets of switchgrass, miscanthus, big bluestem prairie grass and cordgrass. The project teams include Drs. Jonathan Blitz and Douglas Klarup of Chemistry, Drs. Thomas Canam and Karen Gaines of Biological Sciences, and Drs. Mori Toosi, Rendong Bai, Jerry Cloward, David Melton and Isaac Slaven of the School of Technology.

Dr. Liu received his BS in Mechanical Engineering from Nanchang University, and MS in Materials Science and Engineering from Zhejiang University, China. He obtained his Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering from Iowa State University prior to joining EIU. He maintains as a licensed mechanical engineer in the State of Illinois. In addition to his teaching and research, he also has helped establish EIU Panther Ballroom Dance Society in 2005, and has served as its faculty adviser ever since.

Internal Funding 2013 Dean’s Award of Excellence in Summer Research and Creative Activity Dr. Britto Nathan, Biological Sciences

Dr. Nathan's research centers around neuroscience with special interest in neurological diseases. His current research is aimed at understanding the pathological pathways that lead to death of brain cells in aging humans, and predisposes them to dementia such as Alzheimer's disease. A wide range of molecular, biochemical, and cellular techniques are used in his laboratory. He has received funding from the Alzheimer's Association and the National Institute of Health, and has published in several journals including Science.

2013 Dean’s Award of Excellence in Research and Creative Activity Dr. Gary Bulla, Biological Sciences

Dr. Bulla's research focuses on mechanisms controlling mammalian gene expression, primarily with regard to development and maintenance of the liver. His laboratory group has developed two liver‐based cell cultures systems to study these mechanisms. Using a recent technology termed "whole genome analysis", gene profiling is currently being used to identify genes which act as master regulators of liver function and their role in the development of liver disease. His research has been funded by the National Institutes of Health and the National Science Foundation.
