In light of an increasing deficit, later than June 1. He said his budget, which totals $900, is too limited to ad- t-ertise to the degree he desires. Making people aware of the practice of minority recruitment at SMU and contacting people who could aid the program is also of primary concern to Hobgood. "We need to explain and sell the program," said Hobgood. SMU's current recruitment program depends mainly on the volunteer efforts of agencies and individuals in the Dallas area. Every week a vacancy list is compiled by the personnel depart- ment. This list is sent' to some 65 agencies and individuals that have agreed to aid SMU in recruiting minorities. They will refer individuals to SMU to apply for a job. The volunteers range from churches to federal,-state and local agencies such as the Mexican-American Chamber of Commerce, American Indian Center, Women for Change Center and the NAACP. Once a vacancy opens, SMU has a waiting period before filling the position to assure that all sources have been informed. This period is ten days for exempt positions and five for non-exempt positions. According to Hobgood, the recruitment program will eventually decrease the disparities in employment, but will take time. He said all the personnel department can do now is to replace people as they leave, since SMU's no longer expanding.
