Tentative Itinerary

DAY 1: WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 22, 2014 Depart to Accra, Ghana – Boston Logan Airport

DAY 2: THURSDAY, OCTOBER 23, 2014 Arrival, transfer to hotel, and welcome dinner

DAY 3: FRIDAY, OCTOBER 24, 2014 Conversation on Ghanaian history and culture with historian at the University of Ghana. City tour of Accra. Guided tours of W.E. Dubois Memorial Centre on Pan–Africanism and Kwame Nkrumah Mausoleum. Visit “Arts Centre”, Center for National Culture. Brief tour of Old Accra – Dutchtown and Jamestown.

DAY 4: SATURDAY, OCTOBER 25, 2014 Depart to , the second capital city in , referred to as the cultural center of Ghana. Brief visit to textile villages: Ntonso, home of Adinkra textile printing— Akan symbols and images representing concepts stamped on cloth and used mainly for funerals— and Bonwire where Kente, a 400 year weaving art form, is preserved. A guided tour of the Museum and Kumasi Cultural Center. Evening with Akan folk musician and storyteller.

DAY 5: SUNDAY, OCTOBER 26, 2014 Participate in Akwasidae Festival, an opportunity to see the King of the Ashanti, Otumfuo Nana Osei Tutu II, while he sits in state. Conversation with African theologian on traditional Akan religious values and worldview.

DAY 6: MONDAY, OCTOBER 27, 2014 Early departure to the Central Region through Bekwai. Stop at Assin Manso, considered the largest slave market in West Africa during the trans-Atlantic slave trade period. At Assin Manso a river called ‘’Donkornsuo’’ or Slave River flows through, and it served as the last bathing place for Africans after the long walk from their sources of capture. We will arrive in Cape Coast, and after lunch, a guided tour of Cape Coast Castle Museum, formerly one of the major transshipment centers of enslaved Africans to the Americas. Free evening.

DAY 7: TUESDAY, OCTOBER 28, 2014 Conversation with humanities scholar at the University of Cape Coast on the impact of the trans-Atlantic slave trade on Ghanaian society, then and now. Guided tour of El Mina Castle, the first European slave-trading post. Adventure at Kakum National Park, a community-based eco-nature reserve center, established at the initiative of local people and the only park on the African continent with a canopy walkway 350 meters (1,150 ft) long. Return to Accra.

DAY 8: WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 29, 2014 Conversation on the threats, challenges, and opportunities for Ghana’s emerging democracy with representative of a Ghanaian policy research non- governmental organization monitoring Ghanaian democracy, good governance and economic development. Visit Omanye House Art Gallery. Depart to the U.S.

DAY 9: THURSDAY, OCTOBER 30, 2014 Arrive in U.S. - Boston Logan Airport
