Date Matthew Reilly Capstone Project Advisor Date Elizabeth Macaulay-Lewis Executive Officer THE CITY UNIVERSITY OF NEW YORK iv ABSTRACT Challenges of Repatriation: Ashanti artifact in American Museum of Natural History by Abdul-Alim Farook Advisor: Matthew Reilly Inspired by calls for the repatriation of famous artifacts like the Benin Bronzes and the Elgin Marbles, for this capstone project, I have analyzed and catalogued 250 sampled Asante artifacts at the American Museum of Natural History (AMNH). Through this analysis, I discuss the many ways museums in North America acquired their collections. By doing so, I explore the difficulties that arise in debates surrounding repatriation due to the manner in which these artifacts were acquired. I argue that due to the many different types of donors of the Asante artifacts to the American Museum of Natural History, the Asante objects at the museum represent a challenging case for repatriation if the Asante kingdom was to ask for their return. This paper is accompanied by a website created through the CUNY Academic Commons, which is accessible here: https://ashantiobjects.commons.gc.cuny.edu/. Kissiedu ABSTRACT This studio-based research improvises on the architectonics of Kumasi kiosks. I present the ensuing body of artefacts as a working prototype which joins on-going cultural conversations on hybridity in contemporary art. The typical Kumasi kiosk is referenced as a site for negotiation of boundaries in its design, setting and function, but I have also made allusions to suggestions of hybridity and boundary negotiation in the polyvalent structure of Asante myth and folklore. I made a close study of three hundred kiosks located in the urban quarters of Kumasi. I also engaged such thinkers on hybrid spaces as Homi Bhabha , Jacques Derrida, Michael Foucault, Stuart Hall, Paul Gilroy, etc, to discourse on Asante mythology. I laid emphasis on the myth of ɔhyeεni (ɔhene-king), a patriarchal figure who negotiates boundaries, Asante and Akan filial kinship narrative from Asante history.

In other words, the study focuses on the rebuilding of the built environment of Kumase from 1874 to 1960. Using qualitative evaluation of archival documents, interviews with Asante chiefs, owners of houses, heads of families, trustees of households etc., and some secondary sources of historical information, this work discusses the traditional architecture of Kumase and, how the British colonial government and its agents joined forces with the Asante political authorities and the entire citizenry to architecturally reconstruct the city. The collaboration between the local people and the Europeans produced striking alterations within the built space of Kumase.

A conversation during that trip with Professor Kwesi Yankah changed the course of my research. He suggested a potential research project on adinkra. With adinkra everywhere in Ghana today, research possibilities seemed endless. Adinkra appealed to me from my interest in studying Akan visual and verbal arts, a research area nurtured during an ethnopoetics course that Professor Yankah taught as a visiting scholar at Michigan in 2011. That conversation led to this project. Soon after that meeting with Professor Yankah, I took an exploratory research trip to Kumasi. Professor Gilbert Amegatcher, who has a wealth of knowledge about Akan arts and culture, traveled with me. The size of the population and its spatial distribution, growth and change over time, and socio-economic characteristics are all important in development planning. The Kilimanjaro Programme of Action on Population adopted by African countries in 1984 stressed the need for population to be considered as a key factor in the formulation of development strategies and plans. A population census is the most important source of data on the population in a country. It provides information on the size, composition, growth and distribution of the population at the national and sub-national levels. Data from the 2010 Population and Housing Census (PHC) will serve as reference for equitable distribution of resources, government services and the allocation of government funds among various regions and districts for education, health and other social services. The Ghana Statistical Service (GSS) is delighted to provide data users with an analytical report on the 2010 PHC at the regional level to facilitate planning and decision-making. This follows the publication of the National Analytical Report in May, 2013 which contained information on the 2010 PHC at the national level with regional comparisons. Conclusions and recommendations from these reports are expected to serve as a basis for improving the quality of life of Ghanaians through evidence-based policy formulation, planning, monitoring and evaluation of developmental goals and intervention programs.

This study seeks to make a comprehensive research into the artefacts of the museum in order to unearth and document their educational values to the general public and the visitors to the museum. Qualitative research was used for the study and this helped the researcher to know the importance of the study especially when there was very little information or when there was no variable known. In this situation, qualitative research provided what needed to be studied and where the artefacts provided the history of Asante without written records.
