Press Release Business School Lausanne and GOLDEN Launch Press Release Business School Lausanne and GOLDEN launch Global Research Program in Business Sustainability Lausanne, 13 February 2013 – Business School Lausanne (BSL) and the Global Organizational Learning and Development Network (GOLDEN) of Bocconi University have joined forces to launch a doctoral program which will provide independent researchers from around the world with a platform for joint research and collaboration in the domain of business sustainability. The program is set to start in February 2013. BSL and GOLDEN have signed a partnership agreement to cooperate in different projects, among which the co-development of a new global research program in sustainability; the establishment of a lecturer training and development program; and the co-creation of an Ecosystems Lab for business education in alignment with the principles of 50+20 . BSL is a consistently ranked among the Top 3 business schools in Switzerland in the QS Global 200 Business Schools Report , and GOLDEN is widely recognized for its leading research centers aiming at developing knowledge and stimulating action to create sustainable enterprise. GOLDEN operates as a research program founded, hosted and coordinated by CROMA – the Center Page 1 of 2 In addition to the global research program, BSL and GOLDEN are collaborating to co-create a relevant faculty training and development program as part of the 50+20 implementation initiatives. The idea is to promote and develop essential knowledge, skills and competencies of doctoral students as well as early, mid and late career scholars in the area of sustainability. What results from this is a “big disconnect.” With this article, we address two main questions: “How can business make an effective contribution to addressing the sustainability challenges we are facing?” and “When is business truly sustainable?” In a time when more and more corporations claim to manage sustainably, we need to distinguish between those companies that contribute effectively to sustainability and those that do not. We provide an answer by clarifying the meaning of business sustainability. We review established approaches and develop a typology of business sustainability with a focus on effective contributions for sustainable development. This typology ranges from Business Sustainability 1.0 (Refined Shareholder Value Management) to Business Sustainability 2.0 (Managing for the Triple Bottom Line) and to Business Sustainability 3.0 (True Sustainability). Business School Lausanne is one of 25 leading business schools chosen to engage in the Aspen Institute’s 2015 Business & Society International MBA Case Competition. Students at these institutions will analyze a brand new case study authored by the Yale School of Management and give deep thought to the potentially positive role that a well-managed business can have in society. “Today’s business students are tomorrow’s business leaders,” said Claire Preisser, Associate Director of the Aspen Institute Business & Society Program. “Now in its sixth year, this program provides an important – and exciting! – opportunity for MBAs to broaden their aperture with regards to the opportunity that the private sector has in creating both economic and societal returns. Design/methodology/approach – The paper is conceptual in its approach, drawing on practical and theoretical insights in the fields of responsible leadership, business sustainability and transformational change. The resulting Circle Model offers a developmental perspective connecting individual and organizational development in service of society. Findings – A key finding lies in expanding the current understanding of an entrepreneurial university beyond its organizational effectiveness to become a true custodian of society in the way it educate, researches and lives this intended purpose. The model offers a next conceptual step for the 50+20 vision (Muff et al., 2013) which had outlined a radical new role for business schools. Research limitations/implications – More research is required to understand how not only the educational and research strategies but also the organizational structure can be transformed to serve a given purpose. Practical implications – Concrete insights and examples of the developmental perspective of the model illustrate the opportunities for educating responsible leaders, for consulting business organizations to serve the common good, and for walking the talk by hardwiring a purpose-driven organization.
