I hope that you have all had a happy and relaxing holiday period. I have finished a couple of small pieces of embroidery and completed my pre-stitching for Di Fisher’s Band Sampler class. I am really looking forward to learning the new stitches on this piece over the next 18 months (or longer in my case!). I hope that you have also been able to achieve some progress on your current projects and are looking forward to more embroidery challenges this year. As mentioned in the last issue, the Management Committee has now finalised its plans for the three years 2020/21 to 2022/23. A copy of the plan will accompany this edition of The Embroiderer. Please do take the time to read it - it is not long or difficult. This document enables you to hold us to account. More than that, it is a document which reflects the strength of the Guild and the energy and enthusiasm there is for us to continue moving forward in the long tradition of the Guild. We would gladly welcome feedback on it. By the time you read this the year will be in full swing. January has already seen lots of action ‘behind the scenes’ with the annual Library stocktake completed, our preferred new membership database (Member Jungle) tested, the office tidied up and lots of papers archived, and a very large donation of embroidery and patchwork items sorted and priced. Whilst hidden from normal view, these activities contribute significantly to the running of the Guild and I would like to thank the volunteers who spend many hours at Guild House carrying out this work. The workshop programme for the first half of 2021 shows the diversity of learning opportunities available to members - from videoing and photographing embroidery, recreating 17th Century stitches to machine embroidery plus lots more. Remember there are many local tutors available to teach Groups - if you need inspiration just make a time to see some of the over 2000 items in the Guild’s Collection. We are planning an Embroidery and Textile Marketplace on Sunday 28 March (see pg 14). There will be embroidery kits, embroidery and patchwork fabric, threads, frames, haberdashery and lots of books for sale. Leaders Day will be on 20 February. As well as providing time for Leaders to talk to each other about the joys and disappointments of being a Group Leader, this year we will be discussing the three-year strategy, Guild House renovation plans and how to deal with challenging behaviours within Groups. Happy stitching. Prudence CONTAINERS FOR CHANGE SCHEME The Guild has now been registered for the Containers for Change programmeme. When you take your recycling to a refund point you have the option to donate your refund amount of 10 cents for every eligible drink container to the Guild, by quoting the Scheme ID C10309821. Further information can be found at: https://www.containersforchange.com.au/wa/how-it-works 2 From The Editor I hope you all had a wonderful and relaxing Christmas. Mine was spent in Melbourne, followed by 13 days self-quarantining at home – well worth it to spend time with my beautiful 2 year old granddaughter! I made good use of the enforced at-home time, and apart from the days I had to work from home I began a new sampler project (Eliza Johnson 1828 from Hands Across the Seas Samplers, coordinated as a stitch-along by A Stitch in Time in Hobart via a Facebook group). I have so far completed the January and February sections so am well in front. I also began a new piece of bobbin lace (a Bucks Point mat) and am already over halfway through it. Prior to Christmas many groups were very busy, as you will see from the wonderful news and pics in this issue. Be sure to add any relevant dates to your 2020 diaries, and now is the time to ensure you are booked in to any Semester 1 workshops you’ve been looking at. Already my term as Editor will come to an end at the next AGM (September). We will be looking for a new Editor then so if this is something that might interest you, do contact me if you have questions about the role. Marilyn Clark-Murphy has stepped back from the proof reading team; thank you Marilyn for your assistance during my time as Editor. TUTOR BIO – WENDY MYLES I’ve had an interest in sewing since I was a little girl and my mum taught me how to use a sewing machine. There was always a sewing machine in the house when I was growing up and I loved making things. I started by sewing clothes and soft toys. As I’ve grown older I’ve developed a passion for Free Motion Machine Embroidery/Textile Art, which has led me to study for an EGWA Teacher Accreditation. I’m always searching for (and learning) new techniques and I never stop looking for inspiration from the nature around me, especially trees and plants. I love to share my passion with others and show what can be achieved using a basic sewing machine. Bookings are now open for Wendy’s Beginner Free Motion Machine Embroidery (right: sneak preview!) 29-30 May 2021 Learn free motion techniques as you make a postcard-sized reference booklet. You are invited to see a collection of wedding dresses – a couple on loan for the occasion by the Royal WA Historical Society and spanning the European settlement of Western Australia, marriage garments from the Textile Collection of the EGWA and a stunning gown embellished by a band of talented embroiderers for one of our ex-junior members who married in June 2019. The stories of the garments, the people who wore them, the background to their construction and the cultural associations will be presented by Victoria Canova (Guild member and fashion graduate of Edith Cowan University), Gail Hawes (Guild member and textile travel specialist) and Suzanne Coleman (Guild member and mother of the bride). Following the talk, join us for morning tea and a closer look at the garments!
