September of the Month

“May Health and Peace Attend your Days” from Milady’s Needle

Ever since Gloria first showed us this sampler, I have loved it … such a tender verse, so many wonderful motifs, like the castle, and the key to the castle, the stag, the peacocks, the fireflies … or bees … or whatever you wish them to be! Love the colorful border as well!

September is a month of many focuses, one of which is S.A.M.P.L.E.R.S! Of course, if you love samplers as much as I do, they’re always in your focus. For those of you on InstaGram, it’s #SeptemberSamplerSoiree and so our September SOM, this sweet, smallish sampler, is perfect in a month where our focus may be frequently diverted. The stitch count, 251 x 232, gives a finished size as follows: * on 40ct, 12.6 x 11.6 * on 46ct, 11.4 x 10.6 As Sampler of the Month, purchase a minimum of 2 “parts” of the kit and receive a 15% * on 56ct, 9.3 x 8.6 Sampler of the Month discount: I still need to do a Tudor/Soie * Chart $20 Surfine conversion. *AVAS Silks: Soie d’Alger $72.00 ~ Soie 100/3 $52.80 *Linen ~ The chart model is stitched on 40ct Weeks Parchment, beautiful color now available in Zweigart from Weeks in varying counts up through 56ct, and there are lots of other choicesThe as well, Attic, depending Mesa, onAZ your Toll-Free: preferred 1.888.94-ATTICcount. Gloria drew her inspiration for her 2018 Summer School project from this sweet sampler when she created this very charming snippet roll that she calls Sampler Memories Snippet Roll ~ Go to Pinterest and search for “snippet rolls” to see many other beautiful snippet rolls. As Gloria says on her blog, I chose to cross stitch my design and it is more orderly than most. That's just my slightly obsessive personality coming out in my art.

There was a handwritten note on the back of one of the antique samplers: “Made by my grandmother’s best friend and presented to her when she left England to come to America in a sail boat in 1851. My grandmother – Ann (Handforth) Garlick. Given to me by my grandmother when I was 14 years old in 1908. (signed) Lillian Garlick. South Ashburnham. Merry has adapted the samplers and created accessories for each. Each sampler is finished with hemstitching. Friendship Sampler I has two accessory projects: First is a pin cushion with a wooden black base. When the actual pin cushion top is lifted off, it reveals two pockets that fan up, one holding scissors and the other holding needles. Second is a souvenir needlecase to commemorate a special trip or event with lots of stitching space for you to personalize. Merry designed her book to record her trip to Paris for her 70th birthday. Think of the endless possibilities for your special book. The little stitching companion doll inside has a pink striped dress and darling side curls. Merry named hers Camille. For a few hours Saturday afternoon, NeedleWorkPress invites you to step back in time to tour a replica nineteenth century Pennsylvania farmhouse in the Arizona desert. Thirty years ago this summer, Niles and Vickie Jennett built and moved into this unlikely dwelling, determined to create an oasis reminiscent of bygone days. Their well-lived-in and loved home contains a variety of needlework and veterinary treasures from the 1800’s. “We collect what we love,” agree Vickie and her daughter-in- law Maegan, who together blend their passion for history and needlework in the small business they run from home (Maegan and her family live just down the lane). “We tend to like simple folk art that draws us into the lives of makers who otherwise would have been forgotten.” They invite Symposium participants to enjoy viewing the many samplers, needlework smalls, and related ephemera that inspire their work. Every room in the house (yes, even the bathroom) has at least a sampler or two; some rooms have dozens. Maegan and Vickie are printing a special NeedleWorkPress surprise just for Symposium participants. Weather permitting, enjoy your box lunch in the garden. From the chart booklet: This beautiful Quaker band sampler from the early 1700’s is worked with brightly colored silks on fine linen. Stitches include cross stitch, Algerian eye, , and Queen/rococo stitch. In the early 18th century the need to learn a great variety of stitches and complex traditional patterns reduced as embroidered costumes and furnishings were replaced by extravagant woven and printed fabrics. The format of English samplers evolved into a squarer shape, reflecting the further changing perception of their purpose. It combined in a single exercise the different stages that a girl would previously have gone through in the acquisition of needlework skills, when her task to embroider one or two samplers followed by a panel or picture. The result was not a long, narrow piece to be rolled up and stored in workbaskets as a reference of stitches and patterns, but something that could be proudly displayed like a painting or print. Besides the reduction in length there was an increasing use of a surrounding border which enclosed the finished needlework. As the century progressed, the border became the norm. Other similar early Quaker samplers are Dorcas Haynes 1720 in the collection of the Fitzwilliam Museum, Grace Catlin 1719 in the collection of the Victoria and Albert Museum, and Martha Haynes 1704 featured in samplers and Tapestry by Marcus Huish. The chart booklet continues with much more interesting historical information. The Attic, Mesa, AZ Toll-Free: 1.888.94-ATTIC (1.888.942.8842) www.atticneedlework.com

Here are the gorgeous Au Ver A’Soie silks laid out on a piece of the Weeks Straw called out in the model ~ it’s always interesting to see how differently colors photograph in different settings. It really is the same color! Sandra in Australia has reproduced the original sampler for one of her granddaughters using the colors found today on the front of Anna’s sampler. However, Sandra has also stitched a second version of Anna’s sampler for her other granddaughter. The two samplers are featured side by side in the centerfold of this booklet. The second version, although based on the first sampler, is an adaptation and uses a multitude of stitches: cross stitch over one and two linen threads, satin stitch, Algerian eyelet stitch, French knots, rice stitch, stem stitch, leaf stitch, two- sided plaited Spanish stitch, needle weaving (horizontal running stitch over one thread), brick stitch, , long cross stitch, reverse , daisy stitch, back stitch, alternating half cross stitch over one thread of linen and straight . As Sandra plied her needle, she says she felt that Anna was beside her whispering suggestions for each motif. The booklet suggests that “If you listen carefully, Anna may whisper to you, too!” Sandra’s first model is on display at Sassy Jack’s, and her second version with the specialty stitches is currently being exhibited at The Attic. I hope you will come in to see it! The Attic, Mesa, AZ Toll-Free: 1.888.94-ATTIC (1.888.942.8842) www.atticneedlework.com

One of several dozen beaded icicles that decorate the branches

I was asked if I would be willing to host another Silent Auction for Breast Cancer Research, but rather, I agreed to exhibit this treasured tree and conduct a drawing, with all proceeds to benefit the organization of my choice. I selected the BCRF (Breast Cancer Research Foundation), where our silent auction donations have gone for almost two decades. Two very kind and generous friends who wish to remain anonymous and who love to bead created this stunning set of beaded ornaments designed by Cindy Hambrick, whose designs are available through EGA guilds and seminars, as I understand it. The ornaments decorate a lighted tree and all will go to a lucky winner. You may purchase opportunity ticket, 3 for $20, with the drawing to be held in mid-November, after our November event, to be shipped in its own travel bag to whoever is

The Value of Shopping at Brick and Mortar Stores An excerpt from the Inspirations Newsletter that came into my Inbox this past week: Upon receiving the latest issue of the ‘ Now’ magazine from the US, we read with interest ‘Elizabeth’s Musings’ where she unpacked her love of being able to shop for all things needle and thread in a fully stocked, local shop.

She spoke beautifully of the experience – you know the one where you not only get to see what’s on offer and make the just-right colour match, but also get to Merry Cox’s exquisite project is on display experience the feel of the different types of thread in your hand to see which one in the shop. Details about this November you’d like to work with?! workshop are on page * of this newsletter. Well… she then went on to share a frustration that many of us have experienced ourselves - with local brick and mortar stores becoming a rarity rather than the norm, we’re shopping online which makes colour matching difficult at best and the tactile experience of holding fabric and thread all but impossible.

Her words were a welcome reminder to savour the times we find ourselves surrounded by supplies that speak to our passion. Whether that be with a quick trip to our local supplier or on an adventure further afield to not only purchase, but also experience the tactile luxury that our love of needle and thread affords us. As unfortunately for some of us, these experiences are becoming as rare as the brick and mortar stores themselves!

Thank you to all of you who support your local needlework shop! ❤

We celebrated daughter-in- law Amy’s birthday last week … family celebrations are always such special times!
