Allgemeines zur Pragmalinguistik In alltäglichen Situationen werden wir mit sprachlichen Äußerungen konfrontiert, deren Sinn, trotz der Kenntnis der Bedeutungen von einzelnen Lexemen, sich nicht eindeutig interpretieren lässt. Ein einfacher Satz (1) Sie wird sich bestimmt freuen, der uns zufällig durch die Nachbartür erreicht, ruft unterschiedliche Assoziationen hervor, die sich aus der Unkenntnis der Begebenheiten, in denen der Satz geäußert wurde, ergeben. Angesichts der Unkenntnis von deiktischen1 Elementen sowie der Unkenntnis der Begleitumstände2 sind wir nicht in der Lage, die kommunikative Funktion einer zufällig gehörten Äußerung zu beschreiben. Diese und weitere Fragen zur Sprechsituation kann man in Anlehnung an Vat er (2002: 169) in der Tabelle 1 darstellen. Mit der Ausarbeitung der Interpretationsmethoden von sprachlichen Äußerungen, u.a. wie dem oben angeführten Beispielsatz (1), beschäftigt sich die Pragmalinguistik – die Lehre von mit(tels) Sprache vollzogenen Handlungen. Die Bedeutung des Terminus „Pragmatik“ resultiert aus seinem griechischen Ursprung (gr. pragma = Handlung). Pragmatik beschreibt die Intentionalität der auf ein Ziel aus- gerichteten sprachlichen Aktivitäten. Die Definitionsversuche der Pragmatik verkörpern u.a. semantische bzw. handlungsbezogene Aspekte, unter denen sprachliche Äußerungen erforscht werden, das Problem der Definitionsbestimmung von wissenschaftlichen Diszi- plinen tritt übrigens in den meisten Forschungsrichtungen auf und ergibt sich aus der ange- nommenen Methodologie und Betrachtungsweise von untersuchten Problemen. Auf Pro- bleme mit der Definitionsbestimmung der Pragmatik weist u.a. Bublitz (2009: 14) hin, der in der Pragmatik „ein sehr weites und unscharfes Feld“ sieht. 1 In der Fachliteratur unterscheidet man folgende Typen der Deixis: Personal- (ich, du, er, sie; der, die, das, diese(r), jene(r)), Temporal- (jetzt, heute, morgen, gestern, damals; Tempora), Lokal- / Raum- (hier, dort, da drüben), Diskurs- (im Folgenden / Weiteren, Letzteres, hiermit), Sozialdeixis (Unterscheidung du / Sie; symme- trische, asymmetrische Konstellation der Sprecher). 2 Wer ist der Sprecher, wer ist der Angesprochene? Wer ist mit dem Pronomen sie gemeint? Was soll der Grund für die Freude sein? In welchem sozialen Verhältnis befinden sich die Gesprächspartner und die mit dem Pronomen sie markierte Person? After you’ve completed this 4-H project, Hyou’ll know a lot. We’ll take fascinating “tours” of four countries—Mexico, Germany, Italy, and Japan—sampling their foods and sharing their traditions. With the help of neighbors, friends, and relatives of different nationalities, you can bring each of these lands right into your meeting room. You can also learn a great deal from foreign restaurants, magazines, newspapers, radio, television, travel folders, films or slides from airlines, and your local schools. Most embassies, consulates, and travel bureaus will send information free or for a small charge. Enhance your project with authentic music and decorations, which are often easy to come by. Many supermarkets carry a wide choice of international foods. Plan to have at least two meetings devoted to each country. You’ll find the meetings so interesting you may even want to plan more! Mexico these foods, brought them back to Spain. Their popularity spread across Europe and, eventually, throughout the world.   • The Myths, Mirths, Mysteries, and Mischiefs of Santa Claus
    1 This book is dedicated to my grandsons. In the beginning this was to be just a short, hopefully interesting, booklet for you. I began collecting Santas or Gift Givers dolls (pictured at end of book) 15 years ago at an art show in Pennsylvania. The first ones I chose were the ones representing the countries of our closest ancestors; Germany, Wales, England and the Netherlands. Having run out of countries with ties to our heritage, and still interested in acquiring more, I next bought ones from the countries we visited for Gramps’ overseas conferences. Each Gift Giver came with a single paragraph describing his or her role in the distribution of gifts. The artist told me she was writing a more comprehensive book and it was almost complete (around 1998). So I waited. Almost every year, I added another Gift Giver. No book. Then, in 2002, the artist suffered a major fire, destroying everything, including her book and gift givers. And, no, she did not computerize let alone use a back-up! I encouraged her to start the book again. Two years later, she told me that she had given up that project, and she also had stopped making Gift Givers and went in a different artistic direction. Okay. I could do this. I could expand the information of the Gift Givers I have, throw in some extra countries, and give the finished copy to you kids. It evolved into a far more ambitious project as one subject led to another, a strange word or tradition had me looking that up wondering how it came to be, leading to yet another oddity of Christmas.
