Got junk? Make it into a work of art! Make something new with something old and enter Portola Valley’s 1st annual “Up with Upcycling Art Contest!” Win fabulous prizes and be the envy of your friends and neighbors. Your artwork will be showcased during the Earth Day Fair and winning projects will be on display at the Town Hall and the Library. What is Upcycling? Upcycling is a popular way to give new life to old things. Upcycling is not the same as recycling. When you recycle, the resulting material is typically of a lesser quality than what it started out as, and can be thought of as “downcycling.” When you upcycle, however, you make something new and interesting with a higher value than the original junk that would have ended up in the trash or the recycling bin.
If your project is made mostly of things that would otherwise be destined for the dump or the recycling bin, you are an upcycler and you could win!

Old books, bicycle parts, plastic bags, styrofoam, candy wrappers, bottle caps, . . . what could you do? 2012 Up with Upcycling Art Contest Official Rules
1. Contest Period: The 2012 Up with Upcycling Art Contest opens Friday, March 23, 2012 and closes on Thursday, April 19, 2012 at 4:59 p.m.
2. How to Enter: Submit your art piece and completed entry form to the Town Hall, Monday through Friday, 8:30 a.m. – 1:00 p.m. or 3:00 p.m. – 5:00 p.m.
3. Restrictions: No more than three entries per person.
4. Quali!cations: Projects should be made mostly of found or recycled materials that would otherwise be destined for the dump or the recycling bin and use of “virgin” or brand new materials should be minimal.
5. Winner Selection: Winners will be selected for each category and age group (Primary Students aged 6-12, Secondary Students aged 13-18, and Adult) by a panel of judges along with a ‘best of show’ honor.

7. Winner Noti!cation: Awards will be announced and all entries will be on display at the Earth Day Fair on Saturday, April 28th, 2012. Winning art pieces will be posted to the Town’s website and placed on display at Town Hall and the Library.
8. Eligibility: Contest is open to all residents of Portola Valley and Woodside and students attending Portola Valley schools.
