II: Tenthredinidae (Hymenoptera, Symphyta) (Catalogo sistematico della Collezione Campadelli. VI contri- buto). Ann. Mus. civ. St. nat. Parole-chiave: Symphyta, Tenthredinidae, sinonimie, faunistica, Campadelli. PESARINI F., 2007 – Hymenoptera Symphyta of the Campadelli Collection. II: Tenthredini- dae (Systematic catalogue of the Campadelli Collection. VI.). Ann. Mus. civ. St. nat. Fer- rara, 7 (2006): The list of the Tenthredinidae preserved in the Campadelli’s Collection, recently do- nated to the “Museo Civico di Storia Naturale di Ferrara”, is given. Data concerning 165 species, besides few specimens identified at generic level, are given. Except for two re- cords of two species, which are from Maritime Alps of France and from Greece respec- tively, all the material has been collected in Italy and for the great part in the Apenni- ne of Romagna and adjacent areas of Tuscany; specimens without any collecting infor- mation are very few. Most interesting remarks concern: Tenthredo albiventris baldinii (A. Costa, 1894), comb. nov., stat. nov. = Tenthredo trivittata picena (= T. albiventris picena) F. Pesarini, 1989, syn. nov.; Caliroa cothurnata (Serville, 1823) and Nematus oli- gospilus Förster, 1854, which are new to Italy; Tenthredo velox Fabricius, 1798 and Ly- gaeonematus saxesenii (Hartig, 1837), which are new to the Apennines; the large Apennine’s series of the rare Tenthredo rubricoxis (Enslin, 1912); and Heterarthrus cfr. aceris (Kaltenbach, 1856). • The Potential of Restored Landfill Sites to Support Pollinating Insects
The potential of restored landfill sites to support pollinating insects Submitted for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy at the University of Northampton 2009 Sam Tarrant UNIVERSITY OF NORTHAMPTON /\V £ I f c bARY i D V V 1 ACC. No. 10*54-^ CLASS N O j)gSS C1657<(o TftQ Abstract Habitat restoration is an important tool in reducing the current decline in biodiversity. To determine the success of restoration, ecologists have previously focused on species richness or on the presence of rare species; little is known of species interactions. This study examines both the potential of restored landfill sites to support pollinating insects and how flower-insect interactions can be used in determining successful restoration. These are important attributes of ecosystem function. Standard belt transects were used to record flowering insect pollinated plants and flower-visiting insects on nine paired restored landfill and reference nature sites, in the broader Northamptonshire region (UK). Over the duration of this study, an area of 25,000m2 was surveyed for floral characteristics and approximately 138,000 floral units were counted from c)8 plant species. A total of 201 flower visitor surveys were performed, with 942 flower-visiting insect samples taken. Flowering plant species richness and abundance of floral resources on restored landfill sites were not found to be significantly different from those on reference sites and the flower-visiting insect assemblages were similar in terms of species-richness and abundance. Interaction structures were examined and whilst the plant-insect assemblages had few species in common, both showed similar levels of nestedness and connectance.

KNOW YOUR POLLINATORS KH-01-20-107-EN-N Tree Bumblebee Bombus hypnorum BEE SIZE 11 mm CONTRIBUTION TO FOOD 66 IMPORTANCE TO WILD FLOWERS 38 MOBILITY 17 STING 32 A common bumblebee often found in parks and gardens. It nests in holes in trees and buildings and sometimes even in bird boxes. The nest is quite large, with a queen and 150 workers or more. The bee flies in the spring and loves visiting fruit trees, raspberries and a host of wild plants. Red-tailed Bumblebee Bombus lapidarius BEE SIZE 12 mm CONTRIBUTION TO FOOD 100 IMPORTANCE TO WILD FLOWERS 50 MOBILITY 14 STING 31 This is a large black bumblebee with a distinctive bright orange tail. It is common over much of Europe and is at home in towns and cities as well as in open countryside and farmland. The nests are often made in old mouse burrows. It is an important visitor to many crops and wild flowers, and flies throughout the spring and summer. Gypsy cuckoo bumblebee Bombus bohemicus BEE SIZE 16 mm CONTRIBUTION TO FOOD 10 IMPORTANCE TO WILD FLOWERS 16 MOBILITY 12 STING 30 While most bumblebees build their own colonies, the female gypsy cuckoo bumblebee has a sneaky way of reproducing. They make no nest of their own but instead take over the nests of white- tailed bumblebees. This bee never collects pollen but they do visit flowers for nectar. There are 10 different types of cuckoo bumblebees in Europe. Ashy furrow bee Lasioglossum sexnotatum BEE SIZE 8.5 mm CONTRIBUTION TO FOOD 57 IMPORTANCE TO WILD FLOWERS 25 MOBILITY 2 STING 18 An uncommon species of mining bee, the ashy furrow bee lives in hedgerows and rural gardens, allotments, heathland, and even areas of waste ground.

Flower-Insect Timed Count: insect groups identification guide This guide has been developed to support the Flower-Insect Timed Count survey (FIT Count) that forms part of the UK Pollinator Monitoring Scheme (PoMS). Who is organising this project? The FIT Count is part of the Pollinator Monitoring Scheme (PoMS) within the UK Pollinator Monitoring and Research Partnership, co-ordinated by the Centre for Ecology & Hydrology (CEH). It is jointly funded by Defra, the Welsh and Scottish Governments, JNCC and project partners, including CEH, the Bumblebee Conservation Trust, Butterfly Conservation, British Trust for Ornithology, Hymettus, the University of Reading and University of Leeds. PoMS aims to provide much-needed data on the state of the UK’s insect pollinators, especially wild bees and hoverflies, and the role they fulfil in supporting farming and wildlife.
