High Counts: Canadian Christmas Bird Counts 2005-2006 Canadian counts reported 289 species on the 106th Christmas Bird Count, down 11 from last year. Two species were added to the Canadian CBC list—Buller’s Shearwater at Hecate Strait, BC and Le Conte’s Sparrow at Kingston, ON. The national list now stands at 405. British Columbia led the way as usual with 161 high counts, followed by Ontario with 87, and Nova Scotia with 36. Victoria, BC had the highest number for a single count with 35, followed by Ladner, BC (21), Halifax-Dartmouth, NS (12) and Cedar Creek, ON (11). Thirty of the high counts are all-time Canadian highs (not counting the new species mentioned above; numbers boldfaced below). Italics indicate those totals (64 species) that are highs for North America as well as Canada.
