Who By Fire Shanah tovah, I hope everyone is having an easy fast, and wish you a g’mar cha- timah tovah, that you have already been sealed for good in the Book of Life. I spoke re- cently to the kids in my class at the Simcha Learning Center at the Rabbi Stephen and Karen Franklin Religious School about the High Holy Days, and particularly about our prayers. What is the difference, I asked them, between a High Holy Day service, and a regular Shabbat service? Even if you come to Shabbat services every week, it is a bit of a tough question. First of all, even though you come to services, it doesn’t mean you know what the prayers are, their order, and what they all mean. Secondly, we only go to High Holy Day services two or three times a year, so it is hard to make a comparison. One student had a good answer: “The shofar?” he said. Yes, the shofar, which is blown on Rosh Hashanah many times, and once at the end of Yom Kippur, is one difference. Another difference is the vidui, or the confessions. We have both long and short confessions on the High Holy Day service. “Ashamnu, bagadnu, gazalnu...”We are guilty, we have been violent, we have stolen...,” the short confession, and the longer ‘Al Chet.’ “Al chet s’chatanu lifanecha...” “The sin we have sinned against you under duress and by choice, the sin we have sinned against you consciously and unconsciously....” Another difference on the High Holy Days is a stress on Gd as ruler, as king. -

Who Shall I Say is Calling? Unetaneh Tokef as a call to change our lives for the better.1 Rabbi Jordan M. Ottenstein, RJE Beth-El Congregation, Fort Worth, Texas Rosh Hashanah Morning, 5776 A story is told of Rav Amnon of Mainz, a rabbi of the Middle Ages, who “was the greatest of his generation, wealthy, of fine lineage, well built, and handsome. The nobles and bishop began asking him to apostacize,”2 to convert to Christianity, but he refused to listen. Yet, after continually pestering him with the same question, Rav Amnon told the bishop, “I want to seek advice and think the matter over for three days.”3 But, the minute he left the presence of the bishop after saying these words, he began to feel guilty. He was unable to eat or drink, the guilt he had over even saying that there was possibility he might leave Judaism was so great. And so, on the third day, he refused to go to the bishop when summoned. The bishop then sent his guards to bring Amnon before him against his will. “He asked, ‘What’s this Amnon, why didn’t you come back as stipulated— that you would take counsel and get back to me and do what I asked?’” Amnon replied, ‘Let me adjudicate my own case. The tongue that lied to you should be sentenced and cut off.’ ‘No,’ the bishop responded.’ It is not your tongue that I will cut off, for it spoke well. Rather it is your legs that did not come to me, as you promised, that I will chop off, and the rest of your body I will torment.’”4 After being tormented and tortured, Amnon was returned to his community on Rosh Hashanah. -

Is there an Authentic Triennial Cycle of Torah Readings? RABBI LIONEL E. MOSES This paper is an appendix to the paper "Annual and Triennial Systems For Reading The Torah" by Rabbi Elliot Dorff, and was approved together with it on April 29, 1987 by a vote of seven in favor, four opposed, and two abstaining. Members voting in favor: Rabbis Isidoro Aizenberg, Ben Zion Bergman, Elliot N. Dorff, Richard L. Eisenberg, Mayer E. Rabinowitz, Seymour Siegel and Gordon Tucker. Members voting in opposition: Rabbis David H. Lincoln, Lionel E. Moses, Joel Roth and Steven Saltzman. Members abstaining: Rabbis David M. Feldman and George Pollak. Abstract In light of questions addressed to the Committee on Jewish Law and Standards from as early as 1961 and the preliminary answers given to these queries by the committee (Section I), this paper endeavors to review the sources (Section II), both talmudic and post-talmudic (Section Ila) and manuscript lists of sedarim (Section lib) to set the triennial cycle in its historical perspective. Section III of the paper establishes a list of seven halakhic parameters, based on Mishnah and Tosefta,for the reading of the Torah. The parameters are limited to these two authentically Palestinian sources because all data for a triennial cycle is Palestinian in origin and predates even the earliest post-Geonic law codices. It would thus be unfair, to say nothing of impossible, to try to fit a Palestinian triennial reading cycle to halakhic parameters which were both later in origin and developed outside its geographical sphere of influence. Finally in Section IV, six questions are asked regarding the institution of a triennial cycle in our day and in a short postscript, several desiderata are listed in order to put such a cycle into practice today. -

Many who do not show up at any other time find their way to services on the very day that the liturgy is the longest. True, they come to hear the shofar blown, but they also come to hear, at the beginning of the repetition prayer. What makes this 1( נוהנת קת ף ) of Musaf, the Un’taneh Tokef prayer so attractive? Could it be the poignant question, “Who will live and who will die?” Or the daunting list of ways in which one may die? Most people think that the message of this piyyut, or liturgical poem, is that our fate is in God’s hands, that it is God who determines how long we live, and that we have, at best, little control over our fu- ture. Program Guide Breakdown Theme- Each year our curriculum will focus on a theme. By centering the entire year around one overarching theme, our youth group participants will understand different characteristics and concepts that will help them achieve this lofty goal. This year’s theme is Manhigut (leadership). Our goal is for our children to view themselves as leaders and to inspire them to play a leadership role every day. Parsha Review- Each week group leaders will have the opportunity to roundup the parsha in two or three paragraphs. By giving over the parsha in a short and simple way, group participants will be able to grasp the parsha as a whole and to get them to think globally and conceptually. Parsha Questions- No Shabbat morning group is complete without a list of parsha questions. These questions allow group participants the opportunity to win fun prizes while increasing their Torah knowledge. Questions vary from basic understanding of story line to challenging source-based material. The answers are provided as well. Tefillah Treasure- Many youth directors have asked for help when it comes to teaching tefillah to children. This is a problem that not only shuls are dealing with. Schools, camps, and youth organizations are having trouble developing creative ideas to help children understand tefillah. Over the course of the year, this section will highlight one aspect of davening by providing both the Hebrew and English text, and one explanatory idea. The older the age group, the more we delve into the idea. This section is designed to help group participants follow the flow of tefillah while understanding what they are saying. -

Elyssa Cherney “Holiness” Sometime in mid-July, I’m sitting at the bedside of a young woman, Ms. Mei who has moved to the US from China. She works at Thomas Jefferson as a biophysicist in Philadelphia and has unfortunately contracted encephalitis, a very serious infection of the brain. The sight of Ms. Mei’s room overwhelms me; the constant beeping of the various machines, the tubes in her throat, her arm, her neck, and the tv that’s on even though she isn’t awake. I have no idea if she can hear me or even feel my presence, but I visit Ms. Mei everyday just to check in. I sit next to her bed, and hold her hand as she fights for her life. Sometimes I speak to her, not knowing if she understands English. Other times I sit silently, not knowing what to say. I don’t know if she’ll ever wake up. But for now, I know that Ms. Mei deserves the company and so I free myself of distractions and sit by her side. Weeks go by, and I keep coming back, each time I quiet my own mind to be there, to be with her, to be present. I think to myself how hard the silence is, how hard it is to see someone this way, and yet how beautiful and simple our visits are. I don’t know why I keeping coming to visit; I don’t know if I’m helping her; and I don’t have any outward goal in being there. -

Kahn Shanah tovah. We read in the Mishnah: One should pray the Amidah with great sincerity. Even if the king asks: How are you? One should not respond; and even if a snake wraps itself around your heel, one should not interrupt the prayer. iNow, I hasten to point out that Rabbi Obadiah Bartenura, a 15th century Italian commentator, explains that this only applies to a Jewish king, for a Yiddishe monarch – we should only be so fortunate! -would surely know about the importance of the silent prayer and this very teaching, but if it’s a gentile king, you better say “Hello, sir, ” back, lest you be executed on the spot! Bartenura goes on to explain that the snake on your leg is likely to be harmless, anyway, but if a scorpion climbs up your leg, it’s definitely appropriate to stop. I thought of this Mishnah when a friend told me this story about Rabbi Israel Salanter. A Lithuanian rabbi living at the eve of the modern world, Salanter worried that excessive attention to the ritual mitzvot was not preparing people to live in the world. Rabbi Salanter passed a meticulously observant Jew during these Ten Days of Awe. Rabbi Salanter’s Hasid, his follower, was so engrossed in prayer and reflection that he failed to greet his Rebbe, whereupon Salanter protested: “Just because you are so pious, does this give you the right to deny me my ‘Good morning’?”'ii The Rabbi saw a community busy with the details of the commandments but painfully lacking in heart and soul. -
