REDRUTH SCHOOL NEWSLETTER Issue 268 5th April 2019 County Rugby 7s Champions Congratulations to the Year 9 rugby team who were crowned County Rugby 7s Champions at the end of a superb day for running rugby at Pool Academy. In the group phase, Redruth beat Mullion 41-0, Penrice 31-0 and Pool 52-0. A complete performance in the quarter final against Truro School saw the team win 56-0. A tough 26-0 win semi-final against Newquay Tretherras meant the team faced Wadebridge in the final, a rematch of the 15 aside final against a very physical Wadebridge. After going 10-0 down, the boys showed great character and composure to come back. The final score of 28-10 meant the boys retained their title, and have finished their 3rd season unbeaten. Well done boys. You are all a credit to the school. Rocket Car Challenge Eleven Year 7 students had an exciting day at RNAS Culdrose on Tuesday, taking part in the second part of the Dendrite - Race for the Line Rocket Car Challenge. All students were a credit to the school, and one of our teams won! They competed against 15 teams in total from schools including Brannel, Falmouth, Penryn and Helston. Ben Brenton, Josh Brenton, Tristan Murray and Rohan Cremore are into the final round, The National Final, which will be held in Duxford. Watch this space! Antarctica Year 7 students have been learning about the continent of Antarctica in their Geography lessons. Students created presentations in a variety of formats; using powerpoint, making models and even baking cakes. Penguins and seals made from fondant icing and marshmallows were all warmly received by students in their Geography lessons. Mineral Point On Sunday we said a fond farewell to our Visitors from Mineral Point, Wisconsin, USA. They have been very ably hosted by families from Redruth school, not only providing local hospitality but also visiting local places of interest. Their trip took them to, Llanhydrock House, The Eden Project, St Michael’s Mount, Lost Gardens of Heligan and Poldark Mine. The exchange programme is now 20 years old and has provided a generation of local people with great friendship and historical knowledge. The staff and students would like to thank their host families for making them feel so welcome. Students and staff from Redruth School will travel to Mineral Point in October as the return visit. Duke of Edinburgh Over the last two weekends in March we had two separate groups of D of E students out and about. Eighteen hardy Silver Award students trekked across the moorland around Zennor and St. Ives over a two day expedition. They did an incredible job of navigating and were able to successfully find their way to both campsites. The first of our Bronze groups were out and about more locally and they were able to map out and follow their chosen routes. They enjoyed a warming campfire and enjoyed the toasting of marshmallows on the Saturday night before finally falling asleep, where peace and quiet fell once again across the land. They were up early the following morning and arrived back at school safe and sound, while enjoying the beautiful weather that we were so fortunate to have!
