To the Stars and Spend the Entire Summer at the Shore the SUN by-the-Sea “Those who live by the sea can hardly form a single thought of which the sea would not be part.” ~Hermann Broch (1886–1951) When I was a youngster I thought I was the luckiest kid in the world. My grandparents had 3 apartment houses in North Wildwood! No worries - never a boring day. Like Bobby’s song says “Every days a holiday ...” The tenants at my grandparents property fell into three categories. There were the Phila. working class families, usually taking apartments weekly. There were the bartenders and wait- resses, doubling up in efficiency units for the summer. (You hardly ever saw these people - Johnny Gilbert they mostly worked and slept.) Then there were the show business performers, renting full size apartments seasonally. ARAB TIMES, SUNDAY, JUNE 6, 2021 NEWS/FEATURES 13 People & Places Television ‘Nobody can do it’ Voice of Jeopardy! keeps going at 92 LOS ANGELES, June 5, (AP): Johnny Gilbert, who decided to stick with “Jeopardy!” after Alex Trebek’s death, faced the wrenching question once again as production for next season neared. This time it would mean adjusting to the quiz show’s yet-to-be-named host, as opposed to the succession of celebrities who have been fi lling in since Trebek suc- cumbed to pancreatic cancer last November. “It’s not easy for me because I worked with Alex for 37 years, and I never thought of anybody replacing him,” he said. “Nobody can do it like he did it, you know.” No one does it like Gilbert either, who at age 92 has decided he’s not ready to call it quits on the show busi- ness career he began pursuing as a teenager. Last year, when he was re- luctant to continue after losing his admired and longtime col- league, others with the show urged Gilbert to consider his role as a comforting touchstone for viewers who also were in mourning for Trebek. “If you just listen to the way Johnny articulates each name, each word, he has a voice and Gilbert even more importantly, de- livery, unlike anyone else,” said Mike Richards, the show’s executive producer. Without Trebek, “the fact we can still rely on Johnny is obviously very impor- tant to us as well.” “This is ‘Jeopardy!’” is Gilbert’s richly booming introduction that opens each episode and belies his years.

Amber Rennard President’s Letter It is my pleasure to welcome you to the 70th Annual Goshen Country Fair. In the 70 years that the fair and the fire company have been in existence a lot has changed in the area surrounding these fairgrounds. One thing that has remained constant is that the community continues to come together to put on the Goshen Country Fair in an effort to raise funds for the Goshen Fire Company. So I encourage you to come join us for a good old fashioned fair. I look forward to seeing you. Ted Harrison IV President,Goshen Country Fair The Idea for the Goshen Country Fair In the late 1940s an idea was brewing in the minds of a few men in Goshen Heights - a hamlet off Rt-3 knows as East Mill- town by the Red Arrow trolley line which ran from 69th Street to West Chester. Their concern was fire protection being four miles from West Chester’s volunteer fire companies. Conversations started on how to start their own fire company. Many evening they met to discuss the need, progressing in to the how. I have a memory of these discussions in our cellar as my father, George Parry, painted Venetian blind slats! Since this was over 70 years ago, I don’t remember (or never knew) details, but it was decided to hold a fair to raise money to start a Volunteer Fire Company.

SHOW OF STARS 95 bassist Emory Gordy, who'd go on to play with or produce Emmylou Harris, Steve Earle, Roy Orbison, and George Jones; drummer Dennis St. John, who'd later work with Neil Diamond, Carole Bayer Sager, and the Band; and keyboardist Spooner Oldham, who'd played with Percy Sledge, Wilson Pickett, and Aretha Franklin and who'd later work with Neil Young, Bob Dylan, and Jackson Browne. Kindred was persistent. I recommended to them some great players; they'd decided that only I would do. Since they were already signed to Warner Brothers and had tremendous touring and recording potential, I decided to join them, recording a pair of Kindred albums in 1971 and 1972 and touring throughout America and Canada opening for Three Do,g Night. Through our shared management connection, I soon got a call from Jerry Edmonton, the drummer from Steppenwolf. They want ed me to join their band. I stayed for three albums and four years as the group's lead guitarist, one of its songwriters , and a co-lead and backing vocalist. Toward the end of my tenure with "the Wolf," I received a call from the Flying Burrito Brothers, the country-rock outfit founded by Gram Parsons and Chris Hillman of the Byrds. They needed a guitarist for a two -week tour. I went down to the rehearsal hall, jammed with the group, and found myself a Burrito for the next fourteen months. Like Uncle Ed in his brief lifetime, I have played with a plethora of artists-from obscure to superstars and try to take something of value away from every musical expe rience.

MUSIC APPRECIATION 2014 JANUARY 2014 As always, a thoroughly varied set of records were brought in. In our 18 pieces, we had 3 Big Bands, Medieval chanting, Rhythm and Blues, Folk, Blues, Rock, FolkRock, BluesRock, Rock n Roll and Chopin. Of course we had old favourites Roy Orbison and Fats Waller. What appealed to me was that members of the group have started to acquire certain records because they heard (and liked) a piece of music at one of our sessions. I call that success for the group. For my part, I’m now looking for a vinyl single of The Spencer Davis Group doing a great version of Georgia On My Mind which was played at this meeting. We finished with a stunning version of Vivaldi’s Four Seasons on electric guitar by a 14 year old French girl called Tina S. On the video clip, it seemed to be just her sitting in her room getting so much out of the guitar. Precocious talent - Look her up on YouTube.
