August 2012 Newsletter ------------------------------------ Yesterday & Today Records P.O.Box 54 Miranda NSW 2228 Phone: (02) 95311710 Email:[email protected] www.yesterdayandtoday.com.au ------------------------------------------------ Postage Australia post is essentially the world’s most expensive service. We aim to break even on postage and will use the best method to minimise costs. One good innovation is the introduction of the “POST PLUS” satchels, which replace the old red satchels and include a tracking number. Available in 3 sizes they are 500 grams ($7.50) 3kgs ($11.50) 5kgs ($14.50) P & P. The latter 2 are perfect for larger interstate packages as anything over 500 grams even is going to cost more than $11.50. We can take a cd out of a case to reduce costs. Basically 1 cd still $2. 2cds $3 and rest as they will fit. Again Australia Post have this ludicrous notion that if a package can fit through a certain slot on a card it goes as a letter whereas if it doesn’t it is classified as a “parcel” and can cost up to 5 times as much. One day I will send a letter to the Minister for Trade as their policies are distinctly prejudicial to commerce. Out here they make massive profits but offer a very poor number of services and charge top dollar for what they do provide. Still, the mail mostly always gets there. But until ssuch times as their local monopoly remains, things won’t be much different. ----------------------------------------------- For those long term customers and anyone receiving these newsletters for the first time we have several walk in sales per year, with the next being Saturday August 25th.

  • The Recordings
Appendix: The Recordings These are the URLs of the original locations where I found the recordings used in this book. Those without a URL came from a cassette tape, LP or CD in my personal collection, or from now-defunct YouTube or Grooveshark web pages. I had many of the other recordings in my collection already, but searched for online sources to allow the reader to hear what I heard when writing the book. Naturally, these posted “videos” will disappear over time, although most of them then re- appear six months or a year later with a new URL. If you can’t find an alternate location, send me an e-mail and let me know. In the meantime, I have provided low-level mp3 files of the tracks that are not available or that I have modified in pitch or speed in private listening vaults where they can be heard. This way, the entire book can be verified by listening to the same re- cordings and works that I heard. For locations of these private sound vaults, please e-mail me and I will send you the links. They are not to be shared or downloaded, and the selections therein are only identified by their numbers from the complete list given below. Chapter I: 0001. • Oboe Trios: an Annotated Bibliography
Oboe Trios: An Annotated Bibliography by Melissa Sassaman A Research Paper Presented in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree Doctor of Musical Arts Approved November 2014 by the Graduate Supervisory Committee: Martin Schuring, Chair Elizabeth Buck Amy Holbrook Gary Hill ARIZONA STATE UNIVERSITY December 2014 ABSTRACT This project is a practical annotated bibliography of original works for oboe trio with the specific instrumentation of two oboes and English horn. Presenting descriptions of 116 readily available oboe trios, this project is intended to promote awareness, accessibility, and performance of compositions within this genre. The annotated bibliography focuses exclusively on original, published works for two oboes and English horn. Unpublished works, arrangements, works that are out of print and not available through interlibrary loan, or works that feature slightly altered instrumentation are not included. Entries in this annotated bibliography are listed alphabetically by the last name of the composer. Each entry includes the dates of the composer and a brief biography, followed by the title of the work, composition date, commission, and dedication of the piece. Also included are the names of publishers, the length of the entire piece in minutes and seconds, and an incipit of the first one to eight measures for each movement of the work. In addition to providing a comprehensive and detailed bibliography of oboe trios, this document traces the history of the oboe trio and includes biographical sketches of each composer cited, allowing readers to place the genre of oboe trios and each individual composition into its historical context. Four appendices at the end include a list of trios arranged alphabetically by composer’s last name, chronologically by the date of composition, and by country of origin and a list of publications of Ludwig van Beethoven's oboe trios from the 1940s and earlier.

  • Chamberfest 2018
ChamberFest 2018 elcome to the 17th annual Juilliard ChamberFest. This year 140 students and faculty return one W week early from the winter recess for a tuition-free chamber music intensive. Working without interruption in the nearly empty Juilliard building in great depth on repertoire they have selected themselves, the musicians have found that ChamberFest’s unlimited rehearsal time and daily coaching yields an extraordinarily rich artistic and educational result. This experience therefore not only nurtures the devoted chamber musician at Juilliard, it also nurtures the broad and reflective education necessary for the training of the 21st-century artist-citizen. Launched in 2002, ChamberFest occupies a unique place in the life of the school, and after this year will have presented 1,300 students in 270 ensemble pairings with Juilliard faculty and guest coaches for almost 300 performances. Juilliard’s musicians have been joined in the past by students from London’s Royal Academy of Music, France’s Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique et de Danse de Paris, Vienna’s Universität für Musik und darstellende Kunst Wien, and the orchestra academy of Brazil’s São Paulo State Symphony Orchestra. Past guest coaches have included soprano Barbara Hannigan, MacArthur Fellow Liz Lerman, and pianist Peter Serkin. ChamberFest has been a home for the traditional—works by Beethoven, Brahms, Dvorˇák, Mendelssohn, Mozart, Schubert and Shostakovich top the list—and the unusual. Included among the latter are interdisciplinary chamber music performances with dancers and choreographers; improvised presentations; premieres; the inclusion of distinctive European instruments rarely heard in the U.S. including the Vienna clarinet, Vienna pumphorn and the French bassoon; and this year’s season opener, by Claudio Papapietro Photo of cellist Khari Joyner Photo by Claudio Papapietro John Corigliano’s evocative Chiaroscuro for two pianos—with one piano tuned a quarter-tone lower than the other.

We are delighted to bring you five concerts again this season! Welcome to Baltimore Chamber Orchestra’s 2017–2018 season: BCO’s 35th year! We are delighted to bring you once again five outstanding concerts this season! BCO is one of the musical treasures of Baltimore. We provide compelling performances of outstanding music in a comfortable, beautiful setting that's easily accessible. Our specialty is music for smaller orchestral ensembles from the extensive classical canon. BCO provides fresh and inspiring interpretations of familiar classics, as well as an opportunity to hear less well-known masterpieces ignored by larger orchestras. BCO is Baltimore’s Intimate Classical Orchestra, striving to create musical intensity at every performance. Our Sunday afternoon audiences are passionate about our concerts and our strong reviews reflect the artistry of the orchestra. Thank you for your generous financial contributions that enable BCO to present outstanding classical music each season. Ticket revenues provide only a portion of the orchestra's operating budget. Your donations also sustain BCO’s commitment to music education of young people, including All Students Free All the Time at concerts. Live Wire String Quartet, BCO’s educational- outreach ensemble, touched the lives of more than 2,000 students last season. And, this season brings the inauguration of The Listening Lab, BCO’s second music-education project for older, elementary-school students. We are helping to create the next generation of classical music lovers! I would also like to highlight our Music Director Markand Thakar's exciting conducting programs each winter and summer.

FROM COUNTRYPOLITAN TO NEOTRADITIONAL: GENDER, RACE, CLASS, AND REGION IN FEMALE COUNTRY MUSIC, 1980-1989 by DANA C. WIGGINS Under the Direction of Michelle Brattain ABSTRACT During the 1980s, women in country music enjoyed unprecedented success in record sales, television, film, and on pop and country charts. For female performers, many of their achievements were due to their abilities to mold their images to mirror American norms and values, namely increasing political conservatism, the backlashes against feminism and the civil rights movement, celebrations of working and middle class life, and the rise of the South. This dissertation divides the 1980s into three distinct periods and then discusses the changing uses of gender, race, class, and region in female country music and links each to larger historical themes.
