Musical Landmarks in New York
MUSICAL LANDMARKS IN NEW YORK By CESAR SAERCHINGER HE great war has stopped, or at least interrupted, the annual exodus of American music students and pilgrims to the shrines T of the muse. What years of agitation on the part of America- first boosters—agitation to keep our students at home and to earn recognition for our great cities as real centers of musical culture—have not succeeded in doing, this world catastrophe has brought about at a stroke, giving an extreme illustration of the proverb concerning the ill wind. Thus New York, for in- stance, has become a great musical center—one might even say the musical center of the world—for a majority of the world's greatest artists and teachers. Even a goodly proportion of its most eminent composers are gathered within its confines. Amer- ica as a whole has correspondingly advanced in rank among musical nations. Never before has native art received such serious attention. Our opera houses produce works by Americans as a matter of course; our concert artists find it popular to in- clude American compositions on their programs; our publishing houses publish new works by Americans as well as by foreigners who before the war would not have thought of choosing an Amer- ican publisher. In a word, America has taken the lead in mu- sical activity. What, then, is lacking? That we are going to retain this supremacy now that peace has come is not likely. But may we not look forward at least to taking our place beside the other great nations of the world, instead of relapsing into the status of a colony paying tribute to the mother country? Can not New York and Boston and Chicago become capitals in the empire of art instead of mere outposts? I am afraid that many of our students and musicians, for four years compelled to "make the best of it" in New York, are already looking eastward, preparing to set sail for Europe, in search of knowledge, inspiration and— atmosphere. -

14-03-2016 19:00 CET Samlealbum fra Dolly Parton, Linda Ronstadt og Emmylou Harris Dolly Parton, Linda Ronstadt og Emmylou Harris er alle tre legender i musikkens historie. Sammen har de solgt over 200 millioner album på verdensbasis, og har turnert i flere tiår fremfor utallige fans verden over. At suksessen var stor da disse ikonene gikk sammen og satt i gang et samarbeid, var ingen overraskelse. Trioen ga ut to album sammen; Trio(1987) og Trio II (1999) og resultatet var oppsiktsvekkende! De to albumene ble til sammen solgt i over fem millioner eksemplarer – og ble belønnet med tre Grammy Awards. Albumene har nylig blitt remastret, og den 9. september kommer samlealbumet The Complete Trio Collectionsom består av tre CD-disker fylt av klassikerne samt sjelden og uutgitt musikk. Johnson (212) 875-5718; [email protected] BERNARD LABADIE TO RETURN TO NEW YORK PHILHARMONIC TO CONDUCT ALL-MOZART PROGRAM Flute Concerto No. 2 with Principal Flute ROBERT LANGEVIN Exsultate, jubilate with Soprano YING FANG in Her Philharmonic Debut Symphony No. 31, Paris Symphony No. 39 December 1–3, 2016 Bernard Labadie will return to the New York Philharmonic to conduct an all-Mozart program: the Flute Concerto No. 2, with Principal Flute Robert Langevin as soloist; Exsultate, jubilate with soprano Ying Fang in her Philharmonic debut; Symphony No. 31, Paris; and Symphony No. 39. The program takes place Thursday, December 1, 2016, at 7:30 p.m.; Friday, December 2 at 8:00 p.m.; and Saturday, December 3 at 8:00 p.m. The concerts open with three youthful works written when Mozart was 17, 21, and 22 years old, and close with the darker Symphony No. 39, written three years before his death. A leading specialist in the Baroque and Classical repertoire, Bernard Labadie led Mozart’s Requiem in his most recent appearance with the Philharmonic, in November 2013. The New York Times described this performance as “glowing … one of the most cohesive I have heard.” These concerts will mark Principal Flute Robert Langevin’s first of Mozart’s Flute Concerto No. 2 with the Philharmonic. Soprano Ying Fang has been acclaimed for her performances of Mozart, including her Metropolitan Opera debut in The Marriage of Figaro in September 2014, and Don Giovanni with The Juilliard School in April 2012. -

June 14, 2007 – XM, the nation’s leading satellite radio service with more than 8 million subscribers, and the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra (BSO) announced today that XM will broadcast eight performances during the Baltimore Symphony’s 2007-2008 season on XM Classics (XM 110), one of XM’s three classical music channels. The series will debut with a live broadcast on September 27, 2007, the inaugural concert of the music directorship of Marin Alsop, the dynamic conductor who that evening will become the first female music director of a major American orchestra. This series marks the BSO’s foray into satellite radio, gaining exposure for the orchestra to a much broader national audience as it enters a new artistic chapter under Marin Alsop. Fenwick Smith to resign from BSO represented by RPR / CopyWriting & Creative Services For Immediate Release 54 Beach Street ™ Woburn, MA 01801 (781) 937-0389 [email protected] GBFA co-founder Fenwick Smith resigns from Boston Symphony Orchestra— Accomplished flutist to take more active role in GBFA Woburn, MA – Thursday, December 15, 2005 — Fenwick Smith, flute: Myra and Robert Kraft chair, endowed in perpetuity in 1981. Fenwick Smith took his first flute lessons in the public schools of Medford, Massachusetts. Largely self-taught until his senior year in high school, he was encouraged by Elinor Preble and Doriot Anthony Dwyer to apply to the Eastman School of Music, where he studied with Joseph Mariano, graduating in 1972. Smith showed an early interest in things mechanical. By the age of sixteen he was working as a part-time milling machine operator for a small manufacturing firm. The following summer, Verne Q. Powell Flutes Inc., the leading American flute maker, offered him employment, which continued, mostly on a part-time, work-at-home basis, for the next twelve years. During this time he built about one hundred Powell flutes, including the instrument he has played during his entire professional career. After a summer at the Tanglewood Music Center, Smith moved to West Berlin, where he promptly became an active free-lancer, taught at Schiller College, and came under the salutary influence of James Galway. He lived in Germany for three years, with forays to Greece and to Paris, where he auditioned for the French Ministry of Cultural Affairs. In 1975, soon after Smith had made plans to return to Boston, the Ministry offered him the position of principal flute in the Regional Orchestra of Toulouse.
