Alabama Department of Archives and History The Department of Archives and History building consists of 179,514 square feet of space, which includes museum galleries, archival storage areas, and offices. The Archives is the oldest state-funded Archives in the nation and is housed in a beautiful marble building that was completed in 1940, featuring museum galleries and a genealogical research facility. Exhibits include Alabama Indians, military and 19th century galleries along with a hands-on gallery for kids, "Grandma's Attic." It serves Alabama to “tell the story of the people of Alabama by preserving records and artifacts of historical value and promoting a better understanding of Alabama history."

First White House of the Confederacy

This house served as ' home while Montgomery served as the Capitol of the Confederate States of America. The Confederate White House contains period furnishings and many of Davis' personal belongings.

Alabama State Capitol

One of the only state capitols designated a National Historic Landmark. The Alabama State Capitol is where Jefferson Davis took the oath of office as the President of the Confederate States of America and where the Civil Rights March ended with Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., delivering a stirring speech from the top of its steps. The historic Senate and House of Representatives Chambers, the old Supreme Court Chambers, and the original governor's office have all been restored to their Civil War-era appearance.

Dexter Avenue King Memorial Baptist Church

In this National Historic Landmark see the modest pulpit where Rev. Martin Luther King, Jr., first preached his message of hope and brotherhood. This church was also a center point of the Montgomery Bus Boycott. A large mural in the church depicts King's Civil Rights crusade from Montgomery to Memphis.

Hank Williams Museum

This popular attraction pays tribute to one of the most revered and loved country music writers and performers. Many of Williams' personal belongings are on display, including the baby blue 1952 Cadillac in which Hank took his last ride.

Rosa Parks Library and Museum

The museum is a major landmark in the revitalization of downtown Montgomery. The museum is located on the site of the old Empire Theatre where Mrs. Parks began her courageous and historic stand in l955. The museum features a recreated street scene and replica of the bus, while video footage transports visitors to the fateful day. Additional exhibits lead visitors on an emotional journey through the days of the Montgomery Bus Boycott, which became the first step on the often difficult path to Civil Rights in America. Exclusive to this museum, the scholar's research area captures Montgomery's history and Civil Rights history including artifacts, oral histories, historical documents, and art for high school students and adults.
