The Veterans Health Care System (CAVHCS) includes the Montgomery and Tuskegee VA Medical Centers, as well as community based outpatient clinics at Ft. Rucker ( Clinic), two facilities in Dothan, Alabama, and one in Columbus, . These six sites serve 140,000 veterans in 43 counties in the central and southeastern portions of Alabama and western Georgia. CAVHCS' mission is to provide excellent services to veterans across the continuum of health care. Our two largest facilities, the Montgomery and Tuskegee facilities are about 40 miles apart and offer employees a remarkable array of choices in the way of housing, shopping, educational opportunities, and recreation.

CAVHCS has affiliations with 24 schools, including Morehouse School of Medicine, Alabama State University, Auburn University, the and Tuskegee University. CAVHCS is authorized 143 hospital beds, 160 Nursing Home Care Unit beds, and 43 Homeless Domiciliary beds.

CAVHCS' vision is to be the preferred veterans' health care system for every stakeholder. In moving toward achieving this vision, CAVHCS will become a preferred health care provider for eligible veterans and other customers, and will be viewed as an employer of choice by staff, and be an integral member of the VA Southeast Network (VISN 7). In addition to providing comprehensive care for veterans residing in its catchment area,

CAVHCS will position itself as a Network resource for geriatrics and extended care, rehabilitation and mental health services. Excellence is contagious at CAVHCS as evidenced by the numerous awards won the last few years. In 2003, CAVHCS was runner up in the Under Secretary for Health Diversity Award. CAVHCS received even more recognition in 2004 by winning three awards: The Alabama Excellence Award - the state equivalent of the Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award, the first ever Secretary's Labor-Management Relations Award and the Montgomery Clean City

Commission Award for Grounds and Overall Appearance. Montgomery offers a variety of old and new homes at all price ranges, as well as an abundance of apartment complexes. The surrounding towns of Prattville, Millbrook, Wetumpka, and other smaller communities offer additional real estate choices within commuting distance. Montgomery is a shoppers' delight with two malls and countless shopping centers with about every retail chain in America represented. Restaurants abound. There is no shortage of choices in any category from fine dining to burger joints. They vary from nationally known chains to those filled with unique local flavor.

Facilities at Tuskegee University

Tuskegee offers a distinctive college town atmosphere. Additionally, the towns of Tallassee, Auburn, and Opelika, Alabama, are just down the road and are sure to offer what you are looking for in the way of restaurants or shopping. Educational opportunities are overflowing in the "river region" city of Montgomery. Auburn University at Montgomery, Troy State University at Montgomery, Alabama State University, and a dozen or so smaller colleges and technical schools offer opportunities to grow academically in almost any field one may choose. Famous Tuskegee University is the educational and cultural focal point of the surrounding town. Auburn University is one of the two largest in Alabama and is a short commute away from either Tuskegee or Montgomery. Whether it is going to the zoo, a museum, taking in a play at the Alabama Shakespeare Festival, going to a minor league baseball game, or hitting the lake or river, the central Alabama region has the recreation you want. Two large lakes and three rivers are in this area, with the Alabama River flowing through Montgomery itself. There is a large and growing zoo. Montgomery area historic sites include the Museum of Fine Arts, the State Archives and History Museum, the , and the "First White House of the Confederacy." A must see in Tuskegee is the National Parks Department museum honoring Booker T. Washington, George Washington Carver, and the new Tuskegee Airmen Museum. The Montgomery Coliseum and Civic Center provide special events year round, from boat shows to rodeos.

The climate of central Alabama is very pleasant. The average annual temperature is 65 degrees and the average rainfall is 50 inches. This climate supports nearly year-round activities such as fishing, gardening, and year-round golf and tennis. Also, we are situated about half way between the mountains and the gulf coast. Alabama's sugary sand beaches are only 2 ½ hours away. Culture, education, and a healthy coming together of races, backgrounds, and beliefs, a heritage made both strong and beautiful by its diversity - this is why you feel at home in central Alabama.
