Just southeast of the station, across the Ventura Freeway (U.S. Route 101) is the Cahuenga Pass, which is arguably a neighborhood as well, consisting of a strip of shops, restaurants and offices that follow US 101, but along Cahuenga Boulevard which parallels the freeway through the pass. Universal City station serves the nearby Universal Studios theme park, as well as the NBC Universal studio complex. Riders can cross the street and board the tram to go to City Walk and the theme park, as well as the Studio itself. A pedestrian tunnel was originally proposed by Metro but was ultimately scrapped because of Universal's reluctance to pay the growing costs of the project. CBS Studio Center is a television and film studio located in the Studio City district of Los Angeles, California. It is located at 4024 Radford Avenue and takes up a triangular piece of land, with the Los Angeles River bisecting the site. Today, the studio is one of the most active in the city for filming sitcoms. Since 2007, The Studio Center serves as home to CBS’s Los Angeles flagship TV station, KCBS-TC, as they vacated Columbia Square to move into a newly-built digitally enhanced office and studio facility located where the house for the hit CBS reality series, Big Brother, once stood. Fryman Canyon Park is located in the eastern Santa Monica Mountains on the north side of Mulholland Drive. The 122-acre Fryman Canyon Park offers spectacular views, a fitness course, and access to the Betty B. Dearing Cross Mountain Trail. The park is abundant with native chaparral, year round springs, and deeply wooded canyons. The park is located at 8401 Mulholland Drive. Universal Studios Hollywood is located on the border between Hollywood and North Hollywood. It is one of the oldest American studios still in continuous production. Universal Studios was founded by Carl Laemmle on June 8, 1912. The production studios are located at 100 Universal City Plaza Drive. Outside the theme park, Universal City includes hotels Universal Hilton & Tower, the Sheraton Hotels and Resorts, a multi-screen theater and Universal CityWalk, which offers a collection of shops and restaurants, as well as the Gibson Amphitheatre, a concert venue. www.charlesdunn.com 12411 Ventura Court, Studio City, CA 91604 10 12411 Ventura Court Studio City, CA 91604 STACY VIERHEILIG-FRASER Senior Managing Director BRE #00986794 Direct | 818.455.8201 [email protected] Charles Dunn Company, Inc. | 12925 Riverside Drive, Suite 201 | Sherman Oaks, CA 91423 | Lic. #01201641 | charlesdunn.com © Charles Dunn Company, Inc. • Sherman Oaks - Studio City - Toluca Lake - Cahuenga Pass Historic Districts, Planning Districts and Multi-Property Resources – 02/26/13
Sherman Oaks - Studio City - Toluca Lake - Cahuenga Pass Historic Districts, Planning Districts and Multi-Property Resources – 02/26/13 Districts Name: Agnes Avenue Residential Historic District Description: The Agnes Avenue Residential Historic District consists of a grouping of five American Colonial Revival single-family residences lining both sides of Agnes Avenue, between Woodbridge Street on the north and Valleyheart Drive on the south, in Studio City. All of the properties are contributors to the historic district. Ranging from one to one-and-a-half stories, the residences were constructed in 1937 and 1938 as varied but cohesive examples of the American Colonial Revival style. The cohesiveness of the district is further enhanced by its deep, uniform setbacks and large lots, concrete sidewalks and landscaped parkways, mature landscaping and street trees, and period light standards. In addition, a decorative wrought-iron fence spans several of the properties on the west side of Agnes Avenue. Significance: The Agnes Avenue Residential Historic District is significant as an excellent example of American Colonial Revival residential architecture, and as an early residential district associated with the entertainment industry in Studio City. The district’s period of significance is 1937 to 1938, when all of the residences were constructed. The area that comprises the Agnes Avenue Residential Historic District was first subdivided in 1927 by the Central Motion Picture District, Inc., a consortium founded by producer and early Studio City booster and developer Mack Sennett, producer Al Christie, and a group of real estate professionals. The consortium’s goal was to build a new studio in the area, as well as a residential and commercial district "to support the economic growth of their new city." In 1928, Sennett succeeded in establishing Mack Sennett’s Studioland, just across the Los Angeles River from the Agnes Avenue district, which helped jump- start residential settlement in the area.

"The old Vitagraph lot, then ABC, now Disney in East Hollywood, once had a large backlot, but by the time of television, the backlot was gone. For an early live western tv show, the side of one of the sound stages was painted to look like a western town or desert scene or something, and the show was show live from in front of that painted building." - Jerry S. "I've been told that all the scenes [in 42nd STREET] inside the theater were shot at Prospect on [what was known as] the Vitaphone theater stage. That stage later became Studio E at ABC, (now Stage 5). Eventually, the auditorium end of the stage was demolished to make way for a new studio now called Stage 4. The Vitaphone stage was sort of like the Phantom stage at Universal in that a portion of it had a permanent auditorium set with seats and boxes. It was removed once ABC took over. The old TV series SPACE PATROL was shot on those combined stages." - Richard P.

  • The History of CBS Hollywood Television Studios
1 The History of CBS Hollywood Television Studios By Bobby Ellerbee and Eyes Of A Generation.com Preface and Acknowledgement This is a unique look at the events that preceded the need for CBS television studios in Hollywood and, as in New York, the radio division is leading the way. This project is somewhat different than the prior reports on the New York studios of CBS and NBC, for two reasons. The first reason is that in that in those reports, television was brand new and being developed through the mechanical function to an electronic phenomenon. Most of that work occurred in and around their headquarters in New York. In this case, both CBS and NBC are at the mercy of geological and technological developments outside their own abilities…namely the Rocky Mountains and AT&T. The second reason has to do with the success of the network’s own stars. Their popularity on radio soon translated to public demand once “talking pictures” became possible. That led many New York based radio stars to Hollywood and, in a way, Mohammed had to come to the mountain. This story is told to the best of our abilities, as a great deal of the information on these facilities is now gone…like so many of the men and women who worked there. I’ve told this as concisely as possible, but some elements are dependent on the memories of those who were there many years ago, and from conclusions drawn from research. If you can add to this with facts or photos, please contact me as this is an ongoing project.
