    XXIII WORLD YOUTH DAY MESSAGE OF THE HOLY FATHER BENEDICT XVI TO THE YOUNG PEOPLE OF THE WORLD ON THE OCCASION OF THE XXIII WORLD YOUTH DAY, 2008 “You will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you will be my witnesses ” (Acts 1:8) My dear young friends! 1. The XXIII World Youth Day I always remember with great joy the various occasions we spent together in Cologne in August 2005. At the end of that unforgettable manifestation of faith and enthusiasm that remains engraved on my spirit and on my heart, I made an appointment with you for the next gathering that will be held in Sydney in 2008. This will be the XXIII World Youth Day and the theme will be: “You will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you will be my witnesses” (Acts 1:8). The underlying theme of the spiritual preparation for our meeting in Sydney is the Holy Spirit and mission. In 2006 we focussed our attention on the Holy Spirit as the Spirit of Truth. Now in 2007 we are seeking a deeper understanding of the Spirit of Love. We will continue our journey towards World Youth Day 2008 by reflecting on the Spirit of Fortitude and Witness that gives us the courage to live according to the Gospel and to proclaim it boldly.     Rome inundated with requests for prayer cards, relics UPDATED ROME – The Rome diocesan office charged with promoting the sainthood cause of Pope John Paul II has exceeded its postage budget because of increased requests for prayer cards and relics of the late pope. “We were getting about 50 requests a day, but overnight it grew to between 500 and 1,000 requests,” a spokeswoman for the office said March 2. “We could not have foreseen this demand,” she said. “It’s an avalanche.” Franciscan Brother Chris Gaffrey, who assists the office with English translations, told Catholic News Service that the vast majority of requests in late February and early March were coming via e-mail from the United States. CNS had published a story about the cards and relics Feb. 26 and dozens of Web sites and blogs, or Web logs, ran links to the story. The prayer cards and relics, a small piece of one of the white cassocks worn by Pope John Paul, always will be distributed free of charge, but without an increase in donations the office cannot afford to mail them, Brother Gaffrey said. While one writer kindly sent the office his express mail account number, others wrote requesting cards for their entire parish without even thinking of what it would cost to ship them from Italy, he said.     Tuesday 4 March 2008 MEDIA RELEASE PAPAL COINS AND STAMPS CELEBRATE WORLD YOUTH DAY SYDNEY 2008 The Perth Mint’s Chief Executive Officer, Ed Harbuz, presented the Archbishop of Sydney, Cardinal George Pell, with official World Youth Day Sydney 2008 (WYD08) commemorative coins during a special ceremony held at St Mary’s Cathedral House in Sydney. “The Perth Mint is delighted to present His Eminence with the Vatican-approved 1oz pure gold and 1oz pure silver proof coins, each accompanied by the ‘number one’ Certificate of Authenticity,” said Mr Harbuz. “World Youth Day is a momentous occasion in the history of Australia and the Catholic Church and we hope that our range of commemorative coins will help to keep the memory alive for years to come,” he said. Both precious metal coins depict His Holiness, Pope Benedict XVI, the WYD08 logo and the inscription ‘World Youth Day Sydney 2008’ on the reverse. The event also marks the official launch of Australia Post’s Papal stamps and the release of a limited edition WYD08 Stamp and Coin Cover, which features The Perth Mint’s latest commemorative – an Australian legal tender coloured $1 aluminium bronze coin. The presentation of the WYD08 commemorative coins and stamps to Cardinal Pell follows the previous announcements by The Perth Mint and Australia Post as official WYO08 licensees. Sydney will host the 23rd World Youth Day from 15 to 20 July, with more than 125,000 international visitors expected to attend and celebrate Pope Benedict’s inaugural visit to Australia.
