On the Lability of Natural Entities, at the Example of Raspe’s De novis e mari natis insulis Enrico Pasini * Early-Modern natural philosophy—when, in the inception phase of geology, or the history of the earth, philosophy, theology, natural science and biblical history were still intertwined—can provide us with some examples of an early understanding of the possible extreme lability of apparently rock-solid natural entities. The example that we shall concentrate upon here is Rudolph Erich Raspe, a German geologist and professor of antiquities. To Raspe’s way of thinking, the fact that new islands still appeared in the 18tʰ century was proof that, in his present time just as in the past, the Earth was subject to impressive movements and commotions: andso,in an impressive way, even lifeless natural entities could raise, disappear, be born and mutate. -

INSTALLING AND UNSETTLING IMAGINARIES; Rehearsing the social within the self FREYA PITT 0000-0002-5061-1606 Submitted in partial fulfilment of the requirements of the degree of Master of Fine Arts (Visual Art) (by Research) DECEMBER 2018 VCA Art Faculty of Fine Arts and Music The University of Melbourne Abstract The practice-led research outlined here explores ways of bringing attention to the mutual contingency of the self and the social through self-portraiture, culminating in a large multichannel projection and sound installation titled How to Deal with Difference (2018). In this thesis I discuss some of the formative influences on this work from various threads of social theory and contemporary installation practice. What we recognise as ourselves is deeply embedded in the social institutions we exist within. Drawing on Cornelius Castoriadis and others, I will use the term 'imaginary' as an articulation of the social constructions that both form and are formed by the individual. I also refer to the artworks created through this research as 'imaginaries', and through their installation have attempted to unsettle the solidity of various perceptions of the self, and the social. My studio practice is situated through analysis of related works by prominent contemporary artists, noting some of the similarities and differences to the approach I have taken. Works by William Kentridge, Camille Henrot, Pipliotti Rist and Lisa Reihana are discussed in some detail, my purpose here being both to acknowledge their influence and to articulate something of what is distinctive in the work I have created. Partly inspired by Judith Butler's account of performative identity and self-poesis, I filmed myself performing many varying and contradictory 'selves', in an exploration of my own relationality and self-formation. -

Andrew Horton (Cambridge: 1993), 20-35 Kevin Moss Middlebury College A RUSSIAN MUNCHAUSEN Aesopian Translation Tot samyj Mjunxgauzen [The Very Same Munchausen] was one of the most popular Soviet made-for-TV films of the late seventies. The tall tales of the 18th century German baron, which form the basis for the screenplay by Grigorij Gorin, are known and loved the world over. The prototype for the legend, Hieronymus Karl Friederich, Freiherr von Münchhausen, fought in the Russian service against the Turks before retiring to his estate, where he hunted and entertained. The legendary Munchausen was born through the publication in 1785 of Baron Munchausen's Narrative of his Marvellous Travels and Campaigns in Russia, which made the real baron something of a tourist attraction in his own lifetime. The original text, written in English by the German refugee Rudolf Erich Raspe, was soon translated into German by Gottfried August Bürger, and within two years it had gone through six English editions and been translated into French as well. New editions meant new additions to Raspe's original, and translators also felt free to embellish and edit as they saw fit. We have then a work in Russian about a German character originally documented in English. For the English reader, additional interest is provided by the exotic settings of some of the adventures: Russia, Turkey, the Indies. But these apparently did not interest Gorin: he did not set his play about the baron in Russia, strangely enough, but at the baron's home in Germany, and the film was shot in the GDR. -

Utopia, Robinson Crusoe, and Gulliver, illustrating respectively the philosophical, the edifying, and the satirical type of fictitious travel, were all written in England, and at the end of the eighteenth century a fourth type, the fantastically mendacious, was evolved in this country. Of this type Munchausen was the modern original, and remains the classical example. The adaptability of such a species of composition to local and topical uses might well be considered prejudicial to its chances of obtaining a permanent place in literature. Yet Munchausen has undoubtedly achieved such a place. The Baron's notoriety is universal, his character proverbial, and his name as familiar as that of Mr. Lemuel Gulliver, or Robinson Crusoe, mariner, of York. Condemned by the learned, like some other masterpieces, as worthless, Munchausen's travels have obtained such a world−wide fame, that the story of their origin possesses a general and historic interest apart from whatever of obscurity or of curiosity it may have to recommend it. The work first appeared in London in the course of the year 1785. No copy of the first edition appears to be accessible; it seems, however, to have been issued some time in the autumn, and in the Critical Review for December 1785 there is the following notice: «Baron Munchausen's Narrative of his Marvellous Travels and Campaigns in Russia. -

Ossian, the European National Epic (1760-1810) by Gauti Kristmannsson The Poems of Ossian are a unique phenomenon in European literary history. They have been referred to as a "pseudotranslation" and effectively discarded from the canon, to which they undoubtedly belonged to for a hundred years, yet their monumental influence on literature, visual art and music is undeniable. The poems were certainly not a translation of one single text but an editoral construct which on its own shook the literary system of the late 18th century to its foundations and helped usher in Romantic notions of poetry, in addition to turning the focus definitely to the native productions of the people in each country or area. The number of translations and imitations of several degrees underlines the huge creative impulse of the poems, which can be seen as a major paradigm shift in the outlook of what is called high culture literature.
