It is the first time that the Conference is moved from its historical site in Turin to be held in Rome in order to achieve a greater prominence and a wider audience involvement. The event aims at facilitating the exchange of experiences among the participants involved in specific sectors and encouraging the development of liaisons between the different sectors. The Conference is also conceived to offer to audience not familiar with specific topics the opportunity to increase their awareness and possibly to establish relationships between solution providers and end users. The 2007 edition spans over three days and includes several sessions dedicated to recent innovations and achievements in the following topics: • Defence • Medicine and Surgery • Cultural Heritage • Virtual World The first day is fully dedicated to Defence applications and is organised jointly with AFCEA Rome Chapter, which will focus on the support that modelling and simulation technologies provide to NCW, with particular regards to the use of Integrated Test Beds. National Stakeholders speakers, both military and industrial, will be present during the day. The session devoted to Medicine and Surgery applications is foreseen during the second day and covers the evolution of new methods and technologies in Augmented Reality, which are used as a support in surgery and application of simulation based training for innovative surgery techniques, with speakers coming from Universities and research centres on a national and international level. Also, during the second day there will be a session held by the European Network Of Excellence INTUITION (www.intuition.eunetwork.net). This network is active in VR/VE technologies and systems future workspaces, which are continuously in cooperation with national organizations, including MIMOS, and will present the roadmap of the European research in the field of VR/VE and a specific deepening on two conference topics: Medical and Cultural Heritage. Furthermore, strategy and instruments will be presented for network sustainability, as an incubator for research and business opportunities in the VR/VE sectors in Europe. The Cultural Heritage will be the main topic of the third day and will harmonically join the past historical events to modern technologies. They will be represented by research centres and companies involved in this field which will discuss their experiences gathered from working in important Italian archaeological sites. The Conference will be closed by a round table on Virtual Worlds. The aim is to show and discuss the potential and criticism of companies populating virtual worlds such as Second Life, Active World. • EBENEZER: Sustainability Consulting Via Dei Barbieri 6 Roma, Italia 00186
EBENEZER: Sustainability Consulting Via dei Barbieri 6 Roma, Italia 00186 May 2, 2005 Arch. Daniel Modigliani Assessorato all’Urbanistica Ufficio Pianificazione e Progettazione Generale Comune di Roma Via del Turismo, 30 ROMA Over the course of twelve weeks, Ebenezer Sustainability Consulting thoroughly examined, analyzed and evaluated the long term sustainability of the planned community, Torraccia di San Basilio. In accordance with your requests, Ebenezer examined whether: • Torraccia is a sustainable development that will remain a viable, vibrant contributor to the traditional and changing landscape of Rome; • The design of Torraccia fosters social and cultural engagement, and meets the needs of the community; • The Torraccia model is appropriate for future developments. The physical, social, economic, ecological and cultural character of Torraccia was incorporated in the assessments of the community’s overall successes and failures. The case study of Torraccia began by outlining core infrastructure components of Torraccia – characterized as transportation, demographics, economics, and policy forces – in an attempt to understand the community of Torraccia in the greater context of the City of Rome. The primary objective was to assess the long-term sustainability of Torraccia di San Basilio as Rome’s current model of a planned community. Once the Torraccia model was completely evaluated, core findings, those which spoke to the sustainability of the area, were extracted from the study to develop a sustainable development criterion referred to as the “Nine Criteria of Sustainability.” Based on the Torraccia case study findings, Torraccia does not exemplify a sustainable development. However, the Torraccia model has the potential to be sustainable contingent to replications of its positive assets, fulfillment of current incentives, and implementation of our suggestions.
