Introduction to the History of Polish-German Relations in its European Context Spring 2011 GRC 360E, REE 335, EUS 346, HIS 362G, POL 324 Unique # 38395, 45205, 36505, 39835, 45457 Class meets: T, Th 9:30 a.m. – 11:00 a.m. BUR 337 Instructor: Jan Musekamp Office: Burdine 368 Phone: 232-6374 Email: [email protected] Office Hours: T 1:30 p.m. – 3:30 p.m. and by appointment Course Description: In 1945, Polish historian Zygmunt Wojciechowski edited a book entitled ―Germany-Poland. 1000 years of struggle.‖ The author was well-known for his anti-German attitude, and was a prominent supporter of the ―Polish Western Idea‖ during the interwar period. Proponents of the ―Western Idea‖ proposed a shift of Polish borders deep into German territory; they wanted to ‗return‘ territory belonging to the first Polish state in the tenth century. Much of the land had been settled by German-speakers (with assimilated Slavic-speaking populations) since the thirteenth century. After World War II, the ―Western Idea‖ was incorporated by Polish communists in an attempt to cater to nationalist rhetoric; accordingly, the communist ―Western Idea‖ projected an endless struggle between Germans and Poles in order to justify new Polish borders and an anti-German stance. Not surprisingly, positive aspects of Polish-German history had no place in the picture. In this course, we will explore Polish-German relations in the context of European change. On the one hand, the region is typified by territorial conflict (as best revealed by the eighteenth century elimination of Poland through Prussian, Austrian and Russian partition). -

Das Engagement innerhalb der Stipendienstiftung ist gewiss die wichtigste und schönste Aufgabe, der sich die Mitglieder des Verbands widmen. Denn gerade mit dem behutsamen Heranführen junger Menschen an Werk und Wirkung Richard Wagners erfüllt ein Verband ganz Wesentliches und leistet bedeutende Arbeit. Und darüber hinaus wäre es ja möglich, dass auf solche Art und Weise sogar Nachwuchs- Mitglieder gewonnen werden. Ein Jubiläum ist stets eine kleine Zäsur, ein kurzes Innehalten, ein Besinnen und Atemholen, natürlich auch ein Bilanzieren des Gewesenen. -

Martin Supper Constraints and Freedom: Berlin University of the Arts UNI.K | Studio for Sonic Art and Sound Research A Conversation with Fasanenstraße 1B, 10595 Berlin, Germany [email protected] Georg Katzer Abstract: This interview sheds light both on a composer and on a hitherto overlooked field, the evolution of electroacoustic music in the former German Democratic Republic (GDR, commonly called East Germany). This latter focus is vital insofar as little of it, if anything at all, is included in established histories of electroacoustic music. These typically take Cologne, Paris, or New York, together with the associated institutions and composers, as starting points, with nary a word for the GDR or elsewhere. The composer Georg Katzer was a key personality in this era. In this conversation he discusses the genesis of electroacoustic music in the GDR, the influences of studios from other countries, the development of the electronic musical instrument known as the Subharchord, establishing a studio (under conditions which, despite adversity, also gave rise to results of a distinctive charm), formal affiliations with international organizations, and much more. Georg Katzer (see Figure 1) was born in 1935 in operas, two ballets, and electroacoustic works, Habelschwerdt, Silesia (then part of Germany, Katzer is involved with multimedia projects and now belonging to Poland). He studied composition improvised music. He has toured Europe playing with Rudolf Wagner-Regeny and Ruth Zechlin, with Johannes Bauer, Wolfgang Fuchs, Paul Lytten, as well as piano, at the Deutsche Hochschule fur¨ Radu Malfatti, Phil Wachsman, Phil Minton, and Musik in East Berlin (now the Hochschule fur¨ Tony Oxley among others. -

REVIEWS From the Rivers International Writing Program, University of Iowa Iowa City, Iowa $2.50, paper Johannes Bobrowski: Poetry from East Germany Johannes Bobrowski is probably the best known East German poet in this country and his recognition here is due in large part to the carefully evocative translations of Ruth and Mathew Mead. With the addition ofFrom the Rivers (International Writing Program, University of Iowa) to the earlier volume,Shadowland (published in the United States by Alan Swallow and included in the Penguin volumeJohannes Bobrowski: Selected Poems) English readers now have nearly all of Bobrowski’s poems available to them. Other translators have also published translations of Bobrowski in magazines and anthologies, and I would hope there might be an eventual gathering of these into a “Collected Poems” volume with Shadowland andFrom the Rivers. Much of Bobrowski’s poetry bears a superficial relationship to the earlier German poetry of nature, but unlike much of that vein’s shallow description of idyllic settings, Bobrowski is supremely concerned with the people in his landscapes and demonstrates a facility with technique that makes the poems seem at once spare and vibrating with covert meaning. -

Master’s thesis, 119 p., 1 appendix page Baltic Sea Region Studies August 2014 This thesis deals with sense of place, the relation that we construct with our dwelling and the surrounding environment. The topic belongs to the field of human geography. Sense of place is deeply intertwined with the ideas of feeling at home and having a place where to return. I argue that narratives of life experience help us relate to the places we inhabit, go through, leave. My analysis concerns Lithuania Minor, the Lithuanian region lying by the border with Kaliningrad, and focuses in particular on Vilkyškiai, a village in the municipality of Pagėgiai. Most of the area’s original population disappeared in the war. After 1945, people from all over the country and the USSR settled here. This raised the prickly question of who belongs to the borderland. Refugees, migrants and settlers allow us to observe closely the development of sense of place and its main constituents. Through this analysis, I challenge the idea of people’s natural rights to places and shows how time, engagement in local-based cultural activities and recollection help foreigners become locals. -

East German Nature Poetry since Reunification Axel Goodbody, Bath This paper asks what has become of the distinctive tradition of GDR landscape poetry since reunification. It examines the representation of the physical changes which have come over the East German landscape in the work of older and younger poets, and considers the extent to which they provide objective correlatives for the socio-political and cultural changes experienced since 1989. The role played by landscape poetry in identity construction is also discussed. The past, travel and Heimat are themes associated with a new critical regionalism in the new Länder founded on personal and collective, local and East German experience. The principal focus is on the poems of Volker Braun, Heinz Czechowski, Wulf Kirsten and Thomas Rosenlöcher, but reference is also made to texts by younger contemporaries such as Kurt Drawert, Durs Grünbein and Michael Wüstefeld. 1. The Landscape Poem as a genre articulating responses to social transformation ‘Veränderte Landschaft’ was the title of an anthology of GDR landscape poetry published by the Insel Verlag in 1979. Its editor, Wulf Kirsten, paid tribute to his former teacher at the Johannes R Becher Literature Institute in Leipzig, Georg Maurer, by opening the volume with Maurer’s poem ‘Veränderte Landschaft’, which expressed the feeling of a new beginning at the end of the Second World War, and adopting the phrase to denote a poetic programme celebrating the transformation of society in the GDR under socialism.
