Die zahlreichen und bleibenden Verdienste im einzelnen hervorzuheben und zu rühmen, ist hier nicht der Platz, doch ich möchte meine herzlichen Glückwünsche zum Jubiläum verbinden mit der Zuversicht, dass nicht allein Rückschau gehalten wird, sondern die vergangenen 50 Jahre als solides Fundament Anerkennung finden, auf dem die Zukunft mit Begeisterung und Ideenreichtum errichtet wird. Das Engagement innerhalb der Stipendienstiftung ist gewiss die wichtigste und schönste Aufgabe, der sich die Mitglieder des Verbands widmen. Denn gerade mit dem behutsamen Heranführen junger Menschen an Werk und Wirkung Richard Wagners erfüllt ein Verband ganz Wesentliches und leistet bedeutende Arbeit. Und darüber hinaus wäre es ja möglich, dass auf solche Art und Weise sogar Nachwuchs- Mitglieder gewonnen werden. Ein Jubiläum ist stets eine kleine Zäsur, ein kurzes Innehalten, ein Besinnen und Atemholen, natürlich auch ein Bilanzieren des Gewesenen. -

Martin Supper Constraints and Freedom: Berlin University of the Arts UNI.K | Studio for Sonic Art and Sound Research A Conversation with Fasanenstraße 1B, 10595 Berlin, Germany [email protected] Georg Katzer Abstract: This interview sheds light both on a composer and on a hitherto overlooked field, the evolution of electroacoustic music in the former German Democratic Republic (GDR, commonly called East Germany). This latter focus is vital insofar as little of it, if anything at all, is included in established histories of electroacoustic music. These typically take Cologne, Paris, or New York, together with the associated institutions and composers, as starting points, with nary a word for the GDR or elsewhere. The composer Georg Katzer was a key personality in this era. In this conversation he discusses the genesis of electroacoustic music in the GDR, the influences of studios from other countries, the development of the electronic musical instrument known as the Subharchord, establishing a studio (under conditions which, despite adversity, also gave rise to results of a distinctive charm), formal affiliations with international organizations, and much more. Georg Katzer (see Figure 1) was born in 1935 in operas, two ballets, and electroacoustic works, Habelschwerdt, Silesia (then part of Germany, Katzer is involved with multimedia projects and now belonging to Poland). He studied composition improvised music. He has toured Europe playing with Rudolf Wagner-Regeny and Ruth Zechlin, with Johannes Bauer, Wolfgang Fuchs, Paul Lytten, as well as piano, at the Deutsche Hochschule fur¨ Radu Malfatti, Phil Wachsman, Phil Minton, and Musik in East Berlin (now the Hochschule fur¨ Tony Oxley among others. -

He studied composition studies with Franz Schmidt. He was the state music director of the Province of Styria and also the Province of Styria Conservatory in Graz and professor as well as president of the Graz Academy of Music. He composed orchestral, chamber, piano and organ works as well as lieder and church music. His other Symphonies are: Nos. 2 in G sharp minor (1955-8), 3 in A minor (1946, rev. 1952-61), 4 "Kapfenberger Symphonie" (1955), 5 in E minor "Tragic" (1940-59) and 6 (1974). He attended the Johann Buwa Piano Academy where he developed his virtuosic piano talents and also taught himself to play the cello and violin at that time. At the University of Graz, he studied with Erich Degner and took courses in musicology. He later taught theory and composition at the Vienna Academy of Music (afterwards the Hochschule für Musik) and became its director and taught there for the next 30 years. He was also an inflential music critic. He composed orchestral, chamber, choral and a vast number of vocal works.
