Property, Identity and Place in Seventeenth-Century New England A thesis submitted to the School of History of the University of East Anglia in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy By Elizabeth Jean Southard 26 July 2013 © This copy of the thesis has been supplied on condition that anyone who consults it is understood to recognise that its copyright rests with the author and that no quotation from the thesis, nor any information derived therefrom, may be published without the author’s prior, written consent. Abstract This thesis presents a study of the construction and defence of English settler-colonies in New England during the seventeenth century, focusing upon the relationship between ordinary people and their environment. This work initially examines the pre- exploration reports and the first few decades of settlement and how commodification and naming practices helped in translating the landscape into a familiar, useful and, most importantly, English place. This continues in Chapter Two with a study of the distribution and construction of towns, boundaries and familiar patterns of agricultural usage. This patterning reveals how early settlers perceived their world, and how they secured traditional English customs and patterns onto this uncultivated landscape. The final two chapters will examine challenges to this system, from within New England and across the Atlantic. Chapter Three focuses on the challenge of native land rights, which threatened to undermine the initial basis of conquest and discovery as claims to the land. However, this was overcome due the flexibility of narratives of ownership and possession and the addition of native land rights to English property regimes. -

The sign or "target" for pages apparently lacking from the document photographed is "Missing Page(s)". If it was possible to obtain the missing page(s) or section, they are spliced into the film along with adjacent pages. This may have necessitated cutting thru an image and duplicating adjacent pages to insure you complete continuity. 2. When an image on the film is obliterated with a large round black mark, it is an indication that the photographer suspected that the copy may have moved during exposure and thus cause a blurred image. You will find a good image of the page in the adjacent frame. 3. When a map, drawing or chart, etc., was part of the material being photographed the photographer followed a definite method in "sectioning" the material. It is customary to begin photoing at the upper left hand corner of a large sheet and to continue photoing from left to right in equal sections with a small overlap. If necessary, sectioning is continued again — beginning below the first row and continuing on until complete. 4. The majority of users indicate that the textual content is of greatest value, however, a somewhat higher quality reproduction could be made from "photographs" if essential to the understanding of the dissertation. -

Wintersemester 2020/21 Vorlesung The Pursuit of Un-American Activities in U.S. Culture 2-st.- Mo, 16:15-17:45, P5 / online Ever since the U.S. was founded, those who did not seem to share the assumptions of a consensual republic/democracy, have frequently been considered Un-American. Examples from history include the “Alien and Sedition Acts” of the 1790s, Xenophobic Nativism of the mid-19th century, the “Red Scare” after WWI, the hearings of the Dies Committee in the 1930s, and McCarthyism in the 1950s. What were the reasons and strategies employed to declare some people “Un-American”? Who had the power to do so, and what ideas of the meaning of “American”, thus, came to the fore? “Un-American” must be distinguished from “Anti-American,” as the lecture course hopes to show. If necessary, the class will be online. Active participation may require response papers. Bushman Introduction Richard Lyman Bushman, named for a Puritan settler and an LDS apostle in his family tree, has ridden an arc from the Depression baby of his post-agri- cultural Utah family to a respected intellectual and scholar of early American history. This was not a development that could have been predicted–he thought he would become a scientist, a mathematician, or a historian of science–but the Puritans and the LDS Church have remained central to his life. Born in 1931, in Salt Lake City, he entered academia at a time when higher education was in an expansive mode, and his talents were recognized and rewarded. At each stage of his career he had completed the necessary preparations so that when a chance came, he was ready to move on and up. This meant that he did not apply for academic jobs, but that they and promo- tions were offered to him. He has never had to go up for tenure and has never asked for a raise. His sense of self was a product of the high regard in which his family held him. His father, Ted Bushman, a fashion illustrator and advertising man, and his mother, Dorothy Lyman, a secretary before she married, were inordinately proud and supportive of their eldest son.
