Coed graduate programs were established in 1958, and university status was granted in 1998. The transition affirms the long tradition of graduate programs at Hollins, originating over 50 years ago. Over the years Hollins has developed M.A. degree programs in children’s literature, creative writing, liberal studies, screen- writing and film studies, and teaching. M.F.A. degrees are available to qualified students in children’s literature, creative writing, dance, playwriting, and screenwriting. Hollins is accredited by the Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (1866 Southern Lane, Decatur, Georgia 30033-4097; telephone: 404-679-4501) to award the degrees of bachelor of arts, bachelor of fine arts, bachelor of science, master of arts, master of fine arts, and certificate of advanced studies. The Hollins curriculum and cocurricular programs prepare students for lives of active learning, fulfilling work, personal growth, achievement, and service to society. The Hollins community sustains talented students engaged in challenging study, and productive scholars and artists devoted to teaching and to the advancement of knowledge. Experiential learning, study abroad, and internships enhance the academic program. The hallmarks of a Hollins education are creativity and effective self-expression, problem solving and critical thinking skills, and independent inquiry and the free exchange of ideas. Hollins nurtures civility, integrity, and concern for others, encourages and values diversity and social justice, and affirms the equal worth of women and men. • The Representation of Suicide in the Cinema
The Representation of Suicide in the Cinema John Saddington Submitted for the degree of PhD University of York Department of Sociology September 2010 Abstract This study examines representations of suicide in film. Based upon original research cataloguing 350 films it considers the ways in which suicide is portrayed and considers this in relation to gender conventions and cinematic traditions. The thesis is split into two sections, one which considers wider themes relating to suicide and film and a second which considers a number of exemplary films. Part I discusses the wider literature associated with scholarly approaches to the study of both suicide and gender. This is followed by quantitative analysis of the representation of suicide in films, allowing important trends to be identified, especially in relation to gender, changes over time and the method of suicide. In Part II, themes identified within the literature review and the data are explored further in relation to detailed exemplary film analyses. Six films have been chosen: Le Feu Fol/et (1963), Leaving Las Vegas (1995), The Killers (1946 and 1964), The Hustler (1961) and The Virgin Suicides (1999). These films are considered in three chapters which exemplify different ways that suicide is constructed. Chapters 4 and 5 explore the two categories that I have developed to differentiate the reasons why film characters commit suicide. These are Melancholic Suicide, which focuses on a fundamentally "internal" and often iII understood motivation, for example depression or long term illness; and Occasioned Suicide, where there is an "external" motivation for which the narrative provides apparently intelligible explanations, for instance where a character is seen to be in danger or to be suffering from feelings of guilt.

For last two years the situation of Polish cinema has changed favourably. In 2005 with the introducing the parliamentary act, Polish cinema received a great opportunity. The Polish Film Institute, created according to world's best standards, has become an institution supporting artists at every stage of film production. The PFI also subsidizes film festivals and retrospectives, supports the infrastructure of cinemas' renewal, promotes Polish cinema abroad, grants professional advancement of filmmakers as well as film schools. We are always trying to be where something important is happening in cinema. The new law and establishing the PFI resulted not only in multiplying the State's expenses on cinema – here I would like to remind that in the worst in this case year of 2002 Ministry of Culture assigned 4.3 million zloty for film production, while only this year the Institute assigned almost 80 million zloty for film production and development. The number of last year's feature film production increased up to 37 titles and in 2007 – 39 feature films have been made.
