ANNUAL REPORT the Skipjack Rosie Parks Was Relaunched at the Annual Oysterfest Celebration on November 2, 2013 AnnualRELEVANCE | AUTHENTICITY | STEWARDSHIP Report2013 - 2014 Board of A Message from the Board Governors by Richard C. Tilghman, Jr., 2014-2015 Chair 2013-2014 Tom D. Seip, Chair In looking back on the Museum’s most Richard C. Tilghman, Jr., Vice Chair recent fiscal year, it’s easy to understand why James P. Harris, Treasurer members of our Board and other donors join Richard J. Bodorff, Secretary me with enthusiasm over this institution’s Schuyler Benson accomplishments and the bright future Paul Berry that lies ahead. Of note are the Museum’s Harry W. Burton strengthened finances, which position the William B. Carter Museum for some of its most important and William S. Dudley meaningful work yet to be done. David E. Dunn The Museum’s strengthened finances, Dagmar D. P. Gipe as you’ll see in this report, are due to a E. Brooke Harwood, Jr. Christopher A. Havener, Jr. balanced budget, accomplished in most part Francis Hopkinson, Jr. through an increase in earned revenues, Fred Israel reduction of debt, and growth in our Richard J. Johnson endowment. Record attendance at last year’s Peter M. Kreindler OysterFest and Watermen’s Appreciation Frank C. Marshall, Jr. Day, for example, and increases in our boat Patrice Miller donations program helped to boost revenues Geoffrey F. Oxnam over previous years. In addition, our endow- Bruce A. Ragsdale Mitchell B. Reiss ment has grown from increases in planned S. Stevens Sands giving and life memberships, as well as market gains. Lelde Schmitz For many of our visitors and members, the year will be remembered for the relaunch Diane J. Staley of the 1955 skipjack Rosie Parks, which took place on November 2, 2013 as more than Henry H. Stansbury 4,500 spectators watched in awe as she returned home to the Chesapeake’s waters. Benjamin C. Tilghman, Jr. Others may be more excited about the acquisition of the 1920 buyboat Winnie Estelle, Alfred Tyler, 2nd which arrived at the Museum on April 1, 2014—thanks to a generous gift from an President anonymous donor—and has been taking passengers out ever since. Our floating fleet Langley R. Shook wasn’t the only star attraction, as new exhibits also marked the year with Navigating Emeriti Freedom: The War of 1812 on the Chesapeake opening May 11, 2013, and Carvers at the Richard T. Allen Crossroads: Sharing Ideas, Techniques and Styles across the Chesapeake’s Susquehanna Flats Howard S. Freedlander opening April 12, 2014. Both exhibits continue into this year, and thanks to a very Alan R. Griffith generous anonymous donor, four of our main exhibit buildings have new or upgraded Margaret D. Keller HVAC systems. Breene M. Kerr Charles L. Lea, Jr. None of this could be accomplished without the support of people like you, along D. Ted Lewers, MD with the staff, volunteers and leaders of this important institution. Many thanks are Fred C. Meendsen due to our Past President, Langley Shook, who retired this past June, and Immediate John C. North II Past Chairman Tom Seip, who provided great leadership and vision as we moved Sumner Parker through this transitional year. We also owe much to a terrific search committee, who Robert A. Perkins ensured a well-qualified and passionate leader for the institution in Kristen Greenaway, Joseph E. Peters who began her work here in July. James K. Peterson Now, with Kristen at the helm and plans for the Museum’s 50th birthday celebration Norman H. Plummer John J. Roberts in 2015 underway, our aspirations for CBMM are set high. Because of our strength- Henry H. Spire ened financial position, along with the continued support of members, friends, and James E. Thomas donors like you, the Museum has a bright future ahead. Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum’s HONOR ROLL OF DONORS We extend our deepest gratitude to our donors for gifts received between May 1, 2013 and April 30, 2014. It is only through the generosity of our friends and supporters that the Museum can fulfill its mission and impact lives by igniting a spark of interest and passion for the Chesapeake Bay and its heritage and culture. INFORMATION TO USERS This reproduction was made from a copy of a document sent to us for microfilming. While the most advanced technology has been used to photograph and reproduce this document, the quality of the reproduction is heavily dependent upon the quality of the material submitted. The following explanation of techniques is provided to help clarify markings or notations which may appear on this reproduction. 1.The sign or “target” for pages apparently lacking from the document photographed is “Missing Page(s)”. If it was possible to obtain the missing page(s) or section, they are spliced into the film along with adjacent pages. This may have necessitated cutting through an image and duplicating adjacent pages to assure complete continuity. 2. When an image on the film is obliterated with a round black mark, it is an indication of either blurred copy because of movement during exposure, duplicate copy, or copyrighted materials that should not have been filmed. For blurred pages, a good image of the page can be found in the adjacent frame. If copyrighted materials were deleted, a target note will appear listing the pages in the adjacent frame. 3. When a map, drawing or chart, etc., is part of the material being photographed, a definite method of “sectioning” the material has been followed. It is customary to begin filming at the upper left hand comer of a large sheet and to continue from left to right in equal sections with small overlaps. If necessary, sectioning is continued again—beginning below the first row and continuing on until complete.

w.calvert ww ma rine mu seu m. com Vol. 41, No. 1 Spring 2016 ne of the tenets of the museum is to conduct research into our themes of maritime history, estuarine biology, and paleontology. Many of the articles you read in the Bugeye Times are the fruit of that original research, and this one is no exception. Tom Wisner was Opart of the Southern Maryland cultural landscape for years. In 2007, he came to the museum to safeguard his life’s work. The Center for the Chesapeake Story (Chestory) Archive is the result of hours and hours of work done to sift through, catalog, and digitize much of what Tom created during his lifetime. This article is another offshoot of that work. What is printed here is an abridged version. The full version with footnotes is available on our website, along with the song lyrics of Wisner’s “The Ghostship Morphy”. Click here for access. Ghost Schooner: The Wreck of the J.R. He loved learning about the 1982, but he had related the story many history and culture of the area from its times before and retold it many times storytellers who lived and worked around thereafter. Much of the editorial matter is based upon the valuable and authoritative papers presented at a symposium held in Korea and )rganized by the FAO and the Indo- ' acific Council. These papers St.1.07,0,0 MV4,104,4",,,A1M, ; have been edited by Commander John Burgess, and are accom- oanied by much other material of value from various authors. Foreword by Dr. D. B. Finn, C.14.G. Director, Fisheries Division, FAO t has become a tradition for the three sections of FAO's Fisheries Technology BranchBoats, Gear and Processingalternately, in each biennium, to organize a large technical meeting with the participation of both Government institutes and private industry. It all started in 1953 with the Fishing Boat Congress having sessions in Paris and Miami, the proceedings of which were published in " Fishing Boats of the World." A Processing Meeting followed in Rotterdam, Netherlands, in 1956, and a ,ear Congress was organized in Hamburg, Germany, in 1957. A second Fishing Boat Congress was held in Rome in 1959, the proceedings of which were again published in " Fishing Boats of the World :2." Those two fishing boat congresses were, in a way, rather comprehensive, trying to cover the whole field of fishing boat design and also attracting participants from dzfferent backgrounds. This was not a disadvantage, because people having dzfferent experiences were mutually influencing each other and were induced to see further away than their own limited world.
