Each technology advance puts new weapons in the hands of global cyber-criminals

Helen Brand ACCA

S SUPREME Court Justice Louis Brandeis, talking about the benefits of open- ness and transparency, famously said that sunlight Uis the best disinfectant. And, converse- ly, we are all rightly suspicious of any- thing that hides in the shadows and conceals identity and motive. Global cybercrime is able to exploit technology to create anonymity and avoid accountability as never before. And it now costs the global economy an estimated $3.5 trillion (£2.7 trillion) a year — greater than the UK’s GDP. The development of economic crime has progressed in parallel with the development of trade and business technologies. The big question we must ask is whether this change in business technology effected by the digital revolution has had a similar impact on the commission, detection and prevention of economic crime. A new report from ACCA and EY — Economic Crime in a Digital Age — addresses this fundamental question, and asserts that digitalisation has led to an increase in the volume and velocity of economic crime attacks, as well as an expansion in their scope and reach. Cybercrime allows criminals to avoid physical security and swift deterrents. They use a wide arsenal of technologi- cally-aided scams to siphon funds from legitimate institutions and pri- vate individuals. HOW The bad news for society is that cyber-pirates tend to stay at least a cou- ple of steps ahead of the law. Their agility and focus on exploiting chinks TO FIGHT in the digital armour of companies and systems mean that law enforce- ment and regulators can struggle to stay ahead of their scams. And in today’s digital world the cyber-criminal can operate across bor- ders, covering their tracks in increas- ingly sophisticated ways. IKE MANY football-mad children, Leah Williamson dreamed of be- coming a professional player. The Ltalent was there and she took the first step on the ladder aged nine when she joined the Arsenal Ladies Cen- tre of Excellence in 2006. However, there was one major problem in her way: 14 years ago there was no such a thing as a female full-time profes- sional footballer. She had role models – Williamson still remembers the excitement of getting a picture with Arsenal winger Rachel Yankey as a youngster – but a full-time ca- reer in women’s football did not appear to be a viable option. Now aged 22, with over 100 starts for Ar- senal under her belt, a Women’s Super League winner’s medal and 14 England caps, Williamson is able to reflect on what could have been. “It’s funny, I had a conversation with my dad when I was younger and he told me, ‘By the time you get there, it will be professional’,” she tells City A.M. at Arse- nal’s London Colney training ground.
