The theory of successful criminal entrepreneurs i ABSTRACT As typological category, criminal entrepreneurs have a different modus operandi from most traditional criminals. This study develops a theory of successful criminal entrepreneurs, operating in non-hierarchically structured organised crime. Successful criminal entrepreneurs cannot be described through classic criminological theories such as low self-control theory. The theory of successful criminal entrepreneurs provides an understanding of the leadership of criminal entrepreneurs which includes vision, leadership style and orientation, in addition to their identity. The theory also provides an understanding of the operational approaches used by successful criminal entrepreneurs in addition to the use of their social networks. The theory of successful criminal entrepreneurs argues that successful criminal entrepreneurs start their careers with a clearly defined vision. Criminal entrepreneurs then lead people towards their vision with a charismatic leadership style, employing social and personal orientation. The operational approaches adopted by criminal entrepreneurs for success in fulfilling their visions include filling a gap in the market, brokerage, bribery and blackmail. These operational approaches are associated with both the location of the criminal entrepreneur in the network and the embedded resources within their network. Among the various networks that criminal entrepreneurs are part of, they occupy both a brokerage position, and a central position within their network of speciality, such as an illegal gambling network. The embedded resources in the criminal entrepreneur networks include criminals, police, politics, money laundering and gang capital, in addition to mentors who can provide the necessary human capital for the success of the criminal entrepreneur’s career.     DARCE CASSIDY Murray Horton This is from my 2015 Organiser’s Report: “In 2014, I was contacted out of the blue by an Australian expatriate filmmaker in the US regarding a never finished film of the 1974 Long March (by bus, I might add) across Australia to a former US military base (North West Cape, Western Australia). A number of New Zealanders, including me, took part in this and it provided the inspiration for the 1975 South Island Resistance Ride, the event which led to the creation of what was first called CAFCINZ (now CAFCA)”. “We put a small sum of $US into the film and screened it at CAFCA’s 40th anniversary celebration, in 2015. Dealing with the Aussie expat also led me to getting back in touch with an old Australian friend (a veteran of both the Long March and the Resistance Ride), with whom I’d lost all contact since the 80s”. That old Australian friend was Darce Cassidy, who died in May 2019, aged 77. Long March & Resistance Ride The Long March was a truly epic event. When I went on it, I was Editor of Canta, the University of Canterbury student paper, and I wrote several lengthy articles about it. But none of those are online. In 2013 corruption findings were made against former Labor ministers Eddie Obeid and Ian Macdonald. The following year, Liberal premier Barry O’Farrell resigned after ICAC obtained a handwritten note that contradicted his claims he did not receive a $3000 bottle of Grange from the head of Australian Water Holdings, a company linked to the Obeids. The same year ICAC’s Operation Spicer investigated allegations NSW Liberals used associated entities to disguise donations from donors banned in the state, such as property developers. Ten MPs either went to the crossbench or quit politics. ICAC later found nine Liberal MPs acted with the intention of evading electoral funding laws, with larceny charges recommended against one. Years earlier there was the sex-for- development scandal, set around the “Table of Knowledge” at a kebab shop where developers met officials from Wollongong council.

The obsession with identity in Australia betrays longstanding uncertainty. It is not difficult to interpret in this uncertainty a replaying of the deeper insecurities surrounding the settler community's legal and more broadly cultural claims to the land. Such insecurities are typically understood negatively. In contrast, this thesis accepts the uncertainty of identity as an activating principle, appropriate to any interpretation of the narratives and themes that inform what it means to be Australian. Fundamental to this uncertainty is a provisionality in the post-colonial experience of place that is papered over by misleadingly coherent spatial narratives that stem from the imperial inheritance of Australian mythology. Place is a model for the tension between the coherence of mythic narratives and the actual rhizomic formlessness of daily life. Place is the ‘ground’ of that life, but an ambivalent ground. An Ambivalent Ground approaches postcolonial Australia as a densely woven text. In this text, stories that describe the founding of a nation are enveloped by other stories, not so well known, that work to transform those more familiar narratives.

At the time of his death, Escobar was thought to be worth an estimated $2 billion, which he purportedly earned during more than a decade of illicit cocaine trafficking. His wealth afforded him a luxurious mansion, expensive cars, and worldwide recognition as a cunning, calculating, and ruthless criminal mastermind. The rise of Escobar to power is like that of many other violent criminals before him. Indeed, as history has shown, major organized crime figures such as Meyer Lansky and Lucky Luciano, the El Rukinses, Jeff Fort, and Abimael Guzmán, leader of Peru’s notorious Shining Path, were all aggressive criminals who built large criminal enterprises during their lives. The existence of these criminals and many others like them poses many unanswered questions about the cause and development of criminal behavior. Why are some criminals but not others involved with organized crime? Is organ- ized crime a planned criminal phenomenon or a side effect of some other social problem, such as poverty or lack of education? As we seek answers to these questions, we are somewhat frustrated by the fact that little information is available to adequately explain the reasons for participating in organized crime.
