In 1999 the District received a grant from the National Heritage Trust to survey the flora of its remnant vegetation. Much of this is on private property and the District Committee selected thirty three plots of remnant bushland on private farms to be included in flora survey. The present report is based on visits to these thirty three remnants that lie on 14 of the 23 farms in the district. The surveys are intended to provide information about the biodiversity of the various remnants with the aim of establishing the priority for preservation, by fencing, of the remnants and to determine the value of linking some of them by the planting of corridors of vegetation. At each site the local landholder(s) joined the survey and provided invaluable background information about the history of the remnants. The vegetation of this part of the northern wheatbelt is known to be very diverse. The Marchagee Nature Reserve, lying north west of the District, was surveyed between 1975 and 1977 (Dell et al. 1979). The area was covered by Beard in his vegetation mapping project (Beard 1976), and part of the south of the District was covered in a report on Koobabbie Farm in 1990 (Davies 1990). -

And the common eastern species are particularly hard to acquire. Yet you can walk into Bunnings and buy a plant of Aulax, a genus no one has ever heard of and native to South Africa. -

Date: ………………………... i ABSTRACT Following mineral-sand mining in the northern sandplains near Eneabba, southwestern Australia, rehabilitation managers have the difficult task of restoring shrubland communities of exceptional plant species richness. Management aims to restore a fully functional and self-sustaining shrubland community with similar vegetation and resilience properties to that of the surrounding natural vegetation. This thesis examines the performance of the restoration program by Iluka Resources Ltd. (and their predecessors) by comparing current vegetation properties and their response to fires on previously mined land versus the surrounding natural shrubland. As biomass accumulates post-restoration, fires will return as a natural disturbance factor and, as a result, a desirable measure of restoration success might include the ability of the postmined lands to recover from disturbance. Pre-burnt plant species diversity, composition, structure and key functional attributes in four mined sites rehabilitated 8 (R8) to 24 (R24) years ago were compared with those of surrounding natural areas classified on the basis of substrate type (low and high sand dunes, shallow sand swales, sand over laterite and sand over limestone). -

State-wide seed conservation strategy for threatened species, threatened communities and biodiversity hotspots Project 033146a Final Report South Coast Natural Resource Management Inc. and Australian Government Natural Heritage Trust July 2008 Prepared by Anne Cochrane Threatened Flora Seed Centre Department of Environment and Conservation Western Australian Herbarium Kensington Western Australia 6983 Summary In 2005 the South Coast Natural Resource Management Inc. secured regional competitive component funding from the Australian Government’s Natural Heritage Trust for a three-year project for the Western Australian Department of Environment and Conservation (DEC) to coordinate seed conservation activities for listed threatened species and ecological communities and for Commonwealth identified national biodiversity hotspots in Western Australia (Project 033146). This project implemented an integrated and consistent approach to collecting seeds of threatened and other flora across all regions in Western Australia. The project expanded existing seed conservation activities thereby contributing to Western Australian plant conservation and recovery programs. The primary goal of the project was to increase the level of protection of native flora by obtaining seeds for long term conservation of 300 species. The project was successful and 571 collections were made. The project achieved its goals by using existing skills, data, centralised seed banking facilities and international partnerships that the DEC’s Threatened Flora Seed Centre already had in place. In addition to storage of seeds at the Threatened Flora Seed Centre, 199 duplicate samples were dispatched under a global seed conservation partnership to the Millennium Seed Bank in the UK for further safe-keeping. Herbarium voucher specimens for each collection have been lodged with the State herbarium in Perth, Western Australia. -

11 VEGETATION OF MARCHAGEE NATURE RESERVE B.G. MUIR General Marchagee Nature Reserve lies within the Irwin district of the South Western Botanical Province of Gardner and Bennetts (1956). Vegetation of the Marchagee Vegetation System has been discussed by Beard (1976a,b). Beard maps the vegeta tion of Marchagee Reserve as 'scrub heath on sandplain' with a belt of 'teatree thicket and samphire' on its north-eastern side. Abbreviated vegetation descriptions are presented in Appendix 1 and sample loca tions are illustrated on Map 1. Full descriptions of the vegetation following the format presented in Muir (1977) are available on request from the Librarian. Species found at some locations are listed in Appendix 2 and families of plants in Appendix 3. Methodology The vegetation of Marchagee Nature Reserve was mapped at Level 1 on the reliability scale set out in Muir (ibid). Each vegetation formation discernible on the air photographs was examined on the ground; at least one location was described in detail within each major association using the classification shown in Table 1 and discussed in detail in Muir (ibid); and a soil profile was described for each major association. Level 1 locations shown on Map 1 represent 'sample areas' where the vegetation was examined in detail. The following prefix numbers of the locations represent basic formation types. 2. = Mallee formations 3. = Shrubland formations 4. = Heath formations 7. = Salt complex 8. = Other The methods used in classifying formations, coding vegetation, preparing plant lists, classifying litter and describing soils are those of Muir (ibid). In addition to the soil characteristics dealt with on other reserves, total soluble salts were also measured on Marchagee Reserve. -

Kunzea dracopetrensis R.Butcher, the new species described herein, is one such species. It was identified as new during curation of the Western Australian Herbarium’s Kunzea Rchb. collection while expediting the publication of three new Threatened taxa from the Ravensthorpe region (Toelken & Craig 2007) as part of the Western Australian Government’s Saving Our Species special edition of Nuytsia (Vol. 17). Two distinctive and morphologically congruent specimens (A.M. Coates 3107; K. Kershaw KK 2184) were identified from two nearby localities within Dragon Rocks Nature Reserve, c. 35 km north of Newdegate in the south-eastern wheatbelt region; one specimen was retrieved from within the extensive K. preissiana Schauer collection, while the other had been recognised as unusual and languished in the “Kunzea sp.” folder. The phrase name K. sp. Dragon Rocks (K. Kershaw KK 2184) was subsequently erected on Western Australia’s vascular plant census, and the taxon added to the State’s conservation list. -
