I had some really positive feedback and hopefully we will get some new members. The whole conference Isopogons & Petrophiles Number 11 Page 2 ISSN 1445-9493 NUMBER 11 FEBRUARY 2008 PETROPHILE HELICOPHYLLA FOREMAN This species was relatively recently described, in 1990, by the late Donald Foreman in Muelleria, the journal of the National Herbarium of Victoria. The type specimen was collected by him in 1985 near Ravensthorpe, WA. It is a small lignotuberous shrub with a prostrate growth habit that can be up to 40 cm high and 1.6 m wide. It has spirally twisted, deep green leaves that reach to 30 cm, and tend to be packed together near the ends of branches. They usually have an erect habit, growing upwards from the prostrate branches on the ground. This unusual leaf habit gives rise to its specific name and makes it a unique and horticulturally desirable plant. Its flowers, which appear between October and February, are about 3.5 cm long, hairy and usually cream to white. Date: ………………………... i ABSTRACT Following mineral-sand mining in the northern sandplains near Eneabba, southwestern Australia, rehabilitation managers have the difficult task of restoring shrubland communities of exceptional plant species richness. Management aims to restore a fully functional and self-sustaining shrubland community with similar vegetation and resilience properties to that of the surrounding natural vegetation. This thesis examines the performance of the restoration program by Iluka Resources Ltd. (and their predecessors) by comparing current vegetation properties and their response to fires on previously mined land versus the surrounding natural shrubland. As biomass accumulates post-restoration, fires will return as a natural disturbance factor and, as a result, a desirable measure of restoration success might include the ability of the postmined lands to recover from disturbance. Pre-burnt plant species diversity, composition, structure and key functional attributes in four mined sites rehabilitated 8 (R8) to 24 (R24) years ago were compared with those of surrounding natural areas classified on the basis of substrate type (low and high sand dunes, shallow sand swales, sand over laterite and sand over limestone).

    State-wide seed conservation strategy for threatened species, threatened communities and biodiversity hotspots Project 033146a Final Report South Coast Natural Resource Management Inc. and Australian Government Natural Heritage Trust July 2008 Prepared by Anne Cochrane Threatened Flora Seed Centre Department of Environment and Conservation Western Australian Herbarium Kensington Western Australia 6983 Summary In 2005 the South Coast Natural Resource Management Inc. secured regional competitive component funding from the Australian Government’s Natural Heritage Trust for a three-year project for the Western Australian Department of Environment and Conservation (DEC) to coordinate seed conservation activities for listed threatened species and ecological communities and for Commonwealth identified national biodiversity hotspots in Western Australia (Project 033146). This project implemented an integrated and consistent approach to collecting seeds of threatened and other flora across all regions in Western Australia. The project expanded existing seed conservation activities thereby contributing to Western Australian plant conservation and recovery programs. The primary goal of the project was to increase the level of protection of native flora by obtaining seeds for long term conservation of 300 species. The project was successful and 571 collections were made. The project achieved its goals by using existing skills, data, centralised seed banking facilities and international partnerships that the DEC’s Threatened Flora Seed Centre already had in place. In addition to storage of seeds at the Threatened Flora Seed Centre, 199 duplicate samples were dispatched under a global seed conservation partnership to the Millennium Seed Bank in the UK for further safe-keeping. Herbarium voucher specimens for each collection have been lodged with the State herbarium in Perth, Western Australia.

This list has been produced by the Department of Sustainability, Environment, Water, Population and Communities (SEWPC) for the Natural Resource Management Spatial Information System. The list was produced using the AustralianAustralian Natural Natural Heritage Heritage Assessment Assessment Tool Tool (ANHAT), which analyses data from a range of plant and animal surveys and collections from across Australia to automatically generate a report for each NRM region. Data sources (Appendix 2) include national and state herbaria, museums, state governments, CSIRO, Birds Australia and a range of surveys conducted by or for DEWHA. For each family of plant and animal covered by ANHAT (Appendix 1), this document gives the number of species in the country and how many of them are found in the region. It also identifies species listed as Vulnerable, Critically Endangered, Endangered or Conservation Dependent under the EPBC Act. A biodiversity summary for this region is also available. However, due to industrial action by the in-flight meal providers, the flight was delayed for one and three-quarter hours, eventually taking off at 16-15hrs. Following a 7 hour flight we arrived in Dubai, where upon we had to make a quick dash across the airport to catch our connecting flight on to Perth. Day 2 Saturday 3rd September Weather: Hot in Dubai. Cloudy and hazy sunshire, 18 degrees in Perth. The Emirates EK420 flight to Perth departed Dubai at 03-15hrs, arriving in Perth at 17-15hrs local time. After completing the immigration, customs and quarantine formalities, we met up with Doug Taggart, our Australian driver for the duration of the tour. Doug transported us into the city, showing us some of the sites on the way, including the Swan River and The Western Australian Cricket Ground, before taking us to The Miss Maudes Swedish Hotel, our base for the next two nights.

Four additional species are recognised in the genus Petrophile R.Br. ex J.Knight by the reinstatement of P. axillaris Meisn. and the description of three new species, P. globifera Hislop & K.A.Sheph., P. foremanii Hislop & Rye and P. septemfida Rye & K.A.Sheph. A hybrid between P. ericifolia R.Br. and P. seminuda Lindl. is documented, the new subspecies divaricata Hislop & K.A.Sheph. is named for P. conifera Meisn., and a lectotype is selected for P. seminuda var. indivisa Benth. There is also a key for members of the genus occurring in Western Australia, excluding those belonging to Petrophile sect. Arthrostigma (Endl.) Kuntze. Introduction Petrophile R.Br. ex J.Knight is an endemic Australian genus belonging to the Proteaceae subfamily Proteoideae. A suprageneric classification of the family based on molecular data (Weston & Barker 2006) places Petrophile together with the small South African genus Aulax Berg. in tribe Petrophileae. One large Western Australian section of Petrophile, P. sect. Arthrostigma (Endl.) Kuntze, has recently been reviewed, with seven additional species named or reinstated (Hislop & Rye 2002; Rye & Hislop 2005).

    KWONGAN & WANDOO TRIP REPORT 2017 Kingia australis, Stirling Range 1 Day 1 11 Sept – King’s Park & Wireless Hill Everyone had decided to fly into Australia a few days early to get over jet lag and have a look around the local area so rather than meeting at the airport we had an extra day to enjoy. This began in the pleasant environs of King’s Park a combination of a well maintained botanic garden with some superb displays of native plants as well as a large tract of native bushland. We spent our time in the latter to familiarise ourselves with the flora we were to experience during the tour. There were the first of many wonderful Anigozanthus manglesii with their unique green ‘kangaroo paws’ on bright red stems. Also common were fine stands of apricot-coloured Diuris corymbosa, though some seemed feisty enough to be considered Diuris magnifica (size seems the only distinction between these two). And these mingled with the pink heads of Sowerbaea laxiflora, various Conostylis, the viola relative Hybanthus calycina, flowery bushes of Hypocalymma robustum, the Running Postman Kennedia prostrata with large red, claw-like flowers and creamy floweredHakea prostrata. The showy orchid Caladenia flava was sprinkled throughout and as we wandered more orchids turned up with a few deep red-lipped Carousel Spider Orchids Caladenia arenicola and delicate pink Caladenia latifolia. Other areas of bushland held much the same and despite the odd shower we had an enjoyable walk. After lunch at the visitor centre we drove the short distance to Wireless Hill where the bushland was even more interesting.
