The Limeliters launched their career in 1959 at San Francisco’s famous “Hungry i” and before long, founding members Alex Hassilev, Lou Gottlieb, and Glenn Yarbrough emerged as one of the dominant voices of the early 1960’s folk music scene. A string of best-selling albums for RCA Records and television appearances quickly made The Limeliters a household name. Throughout the ensuing years, the lineup has featured several spectacularly talented new members, but The Limeliters have never deviated from the integrity of the fabulous sound they pio- neered. With an undiminished energy and enthusiasm, current members Don Marovich, Andy Corwin, and Gaylan Taylor re- main as exciting an act as the genre has produced. ARIZONA GHOST TOWN DOUBLE FEATURE: Ghost Town Trail and Ghost Towns of Old Arizona Two Films by Phil Wenstrand Wednesday, March 6 th at 7:00 PM Tickets: $10 in advance - $15 at door The Ghost Town Trail isn’t necessarily a real place but is com- posed of the few images and stories that remain of Arizona’s frontier past. The “Trail” takes the viewer down a path that leads to riches, treasure and murder. Jimmy Pierce was just eating his lunch when he discovered a fortune. The Haldeman brothers were just defending themselves but they became the victims of “The Last Hanging” of Tombstone. Frontier Arizona was a very hostile place. Forbidding deserts, heat and unfriendly natives made pio- neering here as tough as any place in the west. As miners dug in search of riches, others built camps that turned into towns. These films will take you into these fascinating and often dangerous places as filmmaker Phil Wenstrand follows the stories and lives of those who braved frontier Arizona. Although Cabrillo and other Spanish mariners sailed along its coast as far back as the 1500s, its first Spanish settlement didn’t come until 1769 with the establishment of presidios at San Diego and Monterey, and in the following year of 1770 with the estab- lishment of the mission at San Diego, which would be the first of that whole string of California missions along El Camino Real. Jack will tell us all about those missions, their importance to the development of California, their treatment of the Indians, and the effect of their secularization; as well as the founding of San Fran- cisco in 1776 by a Tucson boy, the Bear Revolt, the discovery of Gold at Sutter’s Mill, its importance in the Civil War and more.
