Mary Neville Libby, ’60, was invocator, followed by Karl Grantier, ’55, and Richard “Butch” Lorow, ’61, leading the pledge of allegiance. Following an awesome, delicious buffet dinner, the roll call and acknowl- edgment of honored classes was held, with enthusiastic responses from attendees. Betsy Perry Rulon, ’67, as the 50-year class spokesperson, shared memories and stories from their years at AACS. AAAA President Lisa Patrick Porter, ’78, assisted by Kasi Emo Washburn, ’97, presented the scholarship checks: Seventeen students received the Jean Hanks Palmiter/Dale Lorow Alumni Scholarships for a total of $42,500. Also awarded were $11,000 in scholarships for the Rachael Amato Baldo/Tom Murphy Memori- al Scholarship, recognizing a student who plans to major or minor in the health care/health science fields in a two- or four-year college program; Greg Norton Memorial Scholarship, honoring a student who participat- ed in two or three sports for four consecutive years, and who displayed outstanding leadership qualities; Juanita Whitaker Pulos Fine Arts Memorial Scholarship, to two students who have participated one or more fields of music, visual arts, theater/drama and plan to pursue one of those fields in a four-year college; and the Anne Wenslow Memorial Scholarship, to a senior for their outstanding service to the Alfred and/or Almond communities outside of school-sponsored functions. Videos featuring the AACS sports careers of Casey Curran, ’04, and Andrew Davis ’05, preceded their induction into the Sports Hall of Fame. Casey, the daughter of Pat Curran, ’78, and Lois McKnight Curran, ’79, competed in three sports – soccer, skiing and softball. Her softball prowess as a senior pitcher, took them to AACS’ first ever appearance in the NYS Final Four tournament. “She will be remembered in Steuben County as one of the greatest softball athletes to play the game,” the video concluded. Andrew Davis, son of Brantley Davis, ’80, and Diane Lawrence, ’79, made his mark in three sports: soccer, wrestling and baseball, winning sec- tional championships and MVP and sportsmanship awards during his career. His wrestling coach recognized his passion and leadership, noting that “Andrew was instrumental in the revitalization of the Alfred-Almond wrestling team.” NYS Senator Cathy Young, 57th Senate District, surprised our 2017 Outstanding Service Award winner, Karl Grantier, ’55, by attending the banquet in his honor. Senator Young has worked with Karl for many years in his endeavors to recognize and honor veterans and their ser- vice to our country. His 12+ year project, to obtain the names of AACS alumni veterans, their awards and the branch in which they served, has resulted in the placement in AACS’ alumni hall of nine handsome walnut plaques listing the names of 478 veterans. In the recent past, he headed up the Hometown Heroes Banner Campaign whereby persons can sponsor large colorful banners, placed on Almond’s light poles, picturing and honoring more than 90 local area veterans. The organized part of the reunion banquet closed with the group singing AACS’ Alma Mater. Informal gatherings continued through the rest of the weekend. A good time was had by all! A Message From the Alumni Association President On behalf of your Alfred Almond Alumni Association Board, we hope that you enjoy the 2018 Blue and Gold Newsletter. The purpose of the Alumni Association is to encourage the connections and camaraderie of past graduates with each other, to recognize and pro- mote past students’ achievements, to preserve AACS history, and to provide financial assistance to future graduates. It has been another great year and a lot has happened with our organization. Highlights include: • Three new members joined the board: Lois McKnight Curran ’79, Shelly Baker Mansfield ’89, Shelly Hackett Brown ’82 • In 2016-17, 976 members paid their $5 dues totaling $4,880 -- 2017-18, 946 members paid totaling $4,730 • In 2016-17, 696 members made contributions to various funds for a total of almost $70,000 -- 2017-18, 649 members’ contributions totalled $61,000 • AACS 2017 class graduated 45 students, with 21 receiving $53,500 in alumni scholarships • Scholarships awarded: Juanita Whitaker Pulos went to 2 students each $2,500; Greg Norton and Rachael Amato Baldo/Thomas Murphy were each awarded for $2,500 and the Anne Wenslow for $1,000. The Alumni Palmiter/Lorow scholarships were awarded for $2,500 to 17 students • Summer camp awards went to 5 underclassmen from the Baker Sports fund and 4 students received assistance from Roberts Fine Arts fund, totaling $2,025 • We had approximately 250 alumni and guests attend the 2017 banquet saluting all our veterans • Gave each member of the 2017 class a one-year complimentary membership and imprinted AAAA flash drive When members of the AACS Alumni community reflect on what being an Eagle means to us, we may very well come up with many different re- sponses. Whether it was a dedicated teacher, an optimistic counselor, a challenging coach, or just the steadying force it provided during some very formative years, Alfred Almond Central School is many great things to many extraordinary people. We, as alumni, carry a proud tradition and, I believe, hold a sacred responsibility to ensure that those things that made Blue and Gold special to us can be passed forward for the next genera- tions of Eagles! We anticipate another great year in raising funds for scholarships and camps but really need your assistance. Our dues and donations into the Alumni Association Founders Palmiter/Lorow scholarship fund are lower than past years. In this newsletter you will find a form to pay your dues and donations to various alumni funds, as well as, to make your 2018 banquet reservation. We really count on your support! LET’S MAKE IT A BANNER YEAR! Thank you for your continued support. Please be sure to let us know of your accomplishments and whereabouts. We are always interested in hear- ing from you, whether to say “Hi” or to share an idea for improving our alumni association. As your Alumni Association President, I want you to know how very proud I am of this organization and what we can accomplish together! A living, lasting memorial to the late Coach Ernie Moore has been placed in the AACS front lawn by the Class of 2017. Coach (Grandpa) Moore, who passed away on February 26, 2017, served AACS for nearly 50 years as physical education teacher, coach, athletic director, and after “retirement,” drove school bus – from 1954 until 2003. The Class of 2017, under the leadership of President Kalista Calk- ins, decided to use class funds for the memorial. AACS Superin- tendent Rich Calkins commented: “We are blessed in that we have had many caring individuals and groups who over the years have donated trees to honor classmates,
