NATIONAL COLLEGIATE BASEBALL WRITERS ASSOCIATION (May 16, 2002) ncbwa.com FORMER COLLEGE PLAYERS ON 2002 MAJOR LEAGUE BASEBALL ROSTERS CHICAGO – Nearly 500 former collegians appear on the current 40-man rosters of major league teams, according to research done by the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association. Some of the game’s brightest stars showed off their talents on the collegiate diamond before moving on to “The Show.” The last two National League Most Valuable Players, Barry Bonds (Arizona State) and Jeff Kent (California), 2000 American League MVP Jason Giambi (Long Beach State) and both of last year’s Cy Young Award winners, Roger Clemens (Texas) and Randy Johnson (USC) are among those that starred in the collegiate ranks. Perennial All-Stars Nomar Garciaparra (Georgia Tech), Frank Thomas (Auburn), Barry Larkin (Michigan), Todd Helton (Tennessee), Jeff Bagwell (Hartford), Kevin Brown (Georgia Tech) and Mike Mussina (Stanford) are a few more examples of quality performers from the college ranks. The Baseball Academy at IMGA is privileged to train the top athletes and future stars from all over the world. The following include recent accomplishments of current students and alumni of The Baseball Academy. 2008 a. The Varsity team finishes the Spring with a record of 24 – 6. b. The Junior Varsity team finishes the season with a record of 11 – 9. c. 54 high school athletes participated in the 2008 Baseball Academy Summer League. Steve Frey coached Red Team won the 2008 title 4-0 over Bayshore in the 8-team summer league d. Alumnus Chris Perez made his MLB debut in 2008 with the St. Louis Cardinals e. Pendleton Senior Tyler Pastornicky was selected by the Toronto Blue Jays in the 5 th round of the MLB June Amateur draft f. Pendleton Senior Kyle Allen was selected by the New York Mets in the 23 rd round of the MLB June Amateur draft 2007 a.     FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE February 11, 2020 2020 INTERNATIONAL LEAGUE FIELD MANAGERS EIGHT IL CLUBS TO BE LED BY NEW SKIPPERS THIS SEASON When the International League's 137th season opens on April 9, eight of the circuit’s fourteen teams will have a new manager leading the quest to capture the coveted Governors’ Cup trophy. Only six managers return from the 2019 season, although several of the League’s new field generals bring pre-existing ties to their teams and communities. It is the first time since 2006 that more than half of the circuit’s clubs changed managers during an offseason. The reining IL Manager of the Year Damon Berryhill is the International League’s longest- tenured manager, preparing to begin his fourth season at the helm of the Gwinnett Stripers. Also hoping to get his team back to the postseason is Brady Williams, who took Durham to the finals in his first year with the Bulls in 2019. They will be challenged in the South Division by another returning manager in Norfolk, Gary Kendall. The 2018 IL Manager of the Year, Lehigh Valley’s Gary Jones, will lead the IronPigs once again this season. Like Jones, Brian Esposito in Indianapolis is also at the helm for the third straight campaign. IL Hall of Famer Billy McMillon will manage the Red Sox for the franchise’s final season at McCoy Stadium in Pawtucket.     The Boston Red Sox Saturday, April 18, 2020 * The Boston Globe Fenway Park is ready to play ball, even though we are not Stan Grossfeld The grass is perfect and the old ballpark is squeaky clean — it was scrubbed and disinfected for viral pathogens for three days in March. Spending a few hours at Fenway Park is good for the soul. The ballpark is totally silent. The mound and home plate are covered by tarps and the foul lines aren’t drawn yet, but it feels as if there still could be a game played today. The sun’s warmth reflecting off The Wall feels good. The tug of the past is all around but the future is the great unknown. In Fenway, zoom is still a word to describe a Chris Sale fastball, not a video conferencing app. Old friend Terry Francona and the Cleveland Indians would have been here this weekend and there would’ve been big hugs by the batting cage and the rhythmic crack of bat meeting ball. But now gaining access is nearly impossible and includes health questions and safety precautions and a Fenway security escort. Visitors must wear a respiratory mask, gloves, and practice social distancing, larger than the lead Dave Roberts got on Mariano Rivera in the 2004 ALCS. Carissa Unger of Green City Growers in Somerville is planting organic vegetables for Fenway Farms, located on the rooftop of the park. She is one of the few allowed into the ballpark. The harvest this year all will be donated to a local food pantry.
